14 years ago today, China's 5th-gen fighter J-20 made its maiden flight. Back in 2009, the US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said in a speech that China will have no 5th-gen aircraft by 2020... In 2011, a few hours before Gates arrived in China for his meeting with Hu Jintao, J-20 made its first-ever test flight. An interesting way to respond? In 2009, Gates also predicted the U.S. would have nearly 1,100 of the most advanced 5th-gen fighters (F-35s and F-22s) by 2020. He also stated that by 2025, the gap between the U.S. and China would only grow wider. The truth is, in 2025, China's 6th-gen fighter jets have finished their maiden flight, while the U.S. Air Force has yet to disclose its 6th-gens.
