Li offered a framing that cuts through decades of Cold War rhetoric about democracy, capitalism, and power. Li draws a sharp distinction between political choice and policy power. In the United States, he argues, voters can rotate political parties endlessly, but the core policies rarely change. Why; because capital has captured the state. Billionaires, corporations, and financial interests shape policymaking regardless of who wins elections. Political authority, in practice, cannot discipline capital. Today, this plays out in plain sight. From Donald Trump bringing figures like Elon Musk into government orbit, hosting tech billionaires at the White House, offering tax breaks to corporations, and openly aligning foreign policy with business interests; to Democrats doing the same through different language. Barack Obama’s decision to bail out Wall Street after the 2008 financial collapse, instead of holding bankers accountable, remains a defining example. Different parties; same beneficiaries. The system, Li argues, is structurally rigged in favour of the one percent. China, by contrast, operates in reverse. The Communist Party is not electorally replaceable, but policies are. Over six decades, China has shifted from Maoist central planning to a market driven economy, lifted more than 800 million people out of poverty according to the World Bank, industrialised at historic speed, and repeatedly adjusted its development strategy. The party remained; the policies changed dramatically. Crucially, Li rejects the idea that China is capitalist. Yes, markets exist; but capital does not sit above the state. Billionaires cannot capture the politburo or dictate national policy. Capital operates, but it does not rule. A lot of people, who are finally admitting China's economy is more successful than any in the west, are coping by saying China is a capitalist country. Not so. China is a Socialist-Market-Economy. Sometimes this is called Socialism with Market Characteristics. At any rate the people (state) owns about half of the productive forces in the form of State Owned Enterprises. #China #Economy #Socialism

Mearsheimer says China could not rise peacefully. But the comments got to the real question: China already rose peacefully. It did not bomb its way into the world’s second-largest economy. It did not build 800 overseas military bases. It did not sanction half the planet. It did not invade, assassinate, regime-change, and call it “order.” China rose through factories, ports, railways, power grids, shipyards, engineers, workers, and decades of national discipline. The real question is not whether China can rise peacefully. It already did. The question is whether America can decline peacefully. And that is where the real danger begins.

Andy Xie understands China very well & he proposes certain areas that China can squeeze harder on US Inc in China if this gets uglier. Basically, he thinks China can live w/o America but not vice versa. This is not 2018 when China needed US chips & SMEs. To Chinese elites, chip war was a bigger shock to the system than the current trade war. China was not prepared in 2018 or 2022, but it is extremely prepared this time around. It might lose 0.5-1% in growth, but that's not a big deal in the overall scheme of things. China's tech sector cannot get crippled by further sanctions & that's why China can afford to play tough. If you do not understand this, then you are not fit to evaluate this entire tariff situation. China thinks America has very few card left, but it still has plenty of ways to hit back. These are not my sentiment. This is how China is thinking. If you don't like the message, don't attack me (the messenger).

The US wants to weaken China to stop Americans asking ‘why can’t we live like that?’ or ‘why can we not have that infrastructure here?’

To all anti-China Chinese, the US wants all Chinese to be poor, and that includes you. This is not a brutalist philosophy, but a loser's philosophy. The America does not accept peer competitors, and even if China adopts the Constitution and laws of the US, the US will find ways to limit the growth of China to the point where it falls back into poverty.
