Today, Stephen Bates has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years after being found guilty of murdering Martin O’Donovan in April. I happened to be at the airport when Zolani Tete arrived home from Liverpool, where, just two days earlier, he had defeated Mexico’s Victor Ruiz by a seventh-round TKO, successfully defending his IBF International bantamweight title. What has remained etched in my memory was not only the jubilant reception for a returning champion, but the deeply emotional moment when Zolani was reunited with his wheelchair-bound mother. Here was a son of Mdantsane who had conquered the boxing world, returning home with his championship belts and sharing that achievement with the mother who had witnessed the difficult journey from the beginning. Today, looking at this photograph is unbearably painful. Last night, 21 August 2026, Zolani “Last Born” Tete, only 38 years old, was brutally gunned down outside his home in Mdantsane. Reports indicate that he had arrived home and was waiting for his gate to open when armed assailants attacked him. What a cruel contradiction: a young man who survived countless rounds against some of the world’s finest boxers, who carried the hopes of Mdantsane and South Africa into boxing arenas across the world, was murdered while simply waiting to enter his own home. Zolani was no ordinary boxer. He rose from Mdantsane, one of the great nurseries of South African boxing, to become a two-weight world champion, holding the IBF junior-bantamweight world title and later the WBO bantamweight world title. He also entered boxing history with his extraordinary 11-second knockout of Siboniso Gonya, recognised as the fastest knockout in a world-title fight. His death is not only a devastating loss to his family and the boxing fraternity. It is another painful reminder of the violent crime that continues to rob our communities of lives, dreams and extraordinary talent. A man who never judged me by my tribe or my previous political positions. He saw my potential and gave me an opportunity. He often expressed how proud he was of my work and my convictions. The last time we spoke was on 8th October 2025, while he was still in India, a week before he passed on. I even made a post about that conversation on the same day. That was Baba…my friend! So, to those trying to twist this story to fit a convenient political narrative I will ask, WHO TOLD YOU? Do you claim to know me better than Baba did? War brings out the worst in some people, but it also brings out the best in others: valor, honor, kindness. On our part, an aggressive war should never be justified, where someone else's freedom is trampled, where someone else's lands and home are seized. Where innocent people are deprived of life. But a defensive war, where people defend their freedom, their home, their future, their children, is something completely different. And such a defense of life and freedom is the duty of the entire free world, if honor and dignity are not an empty place for it. War is not a Hollywood action movie. It is death, pain, destruction. And when some in the world seek justification for this evil, they try to close their eyes to it or justify the aggressor. When there is no determination to fight this evil. Eventually I found a safe space in Plus 2 Cafe (Maakro) surrounded by like minded young boys thrust into adulthood who were finding their place in the sun. Their push gave me the confidence to take the bold step of moving to Accra to find a manager and take a stab at music whilst getting some education. Fast forward, my debut album brought over 600 people together to have a therapy session called #FMBConcert. And every time the crowd sang along to my lines I remembered those boys - Plus 2, Lincoln, Chameleon, Suffer, Alhaji (who currently manages another Maakro boy named O’Kenneth of Asakaa Boys). Stories I Never Told, Episode 2 The year was 2008 or 2009 (my memory fails me). Deon Boakye’s Alewa and a Yung Cee Song (Guru will later take that beat and make a song called Alkayida that started a revolution) had the radio on lock in Kumasi (DJ KWAKU SLIM drop a video mix if you have any of those songs still). I was a skinny SS graduate who had no clear idea what he wanted to do with his life. Uni was looking like it wouldn’t come on (more on that later). I tried entrepreneurship and my cousin cheated me. Then the homie K Rich tried to hook me up with a JSS teaching job at Peniel (Bremang) but the headmaster said I’ll worry the girls and tried to get me to teach class 3 (I failed that interview because I didn’t prepare for that).
