After years of scientific research, no study has shown that acetaminophen, the main ingredient in Tylenol, causes autism. The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. plans to announce that the use of Tylenol during pregnancy "is potentially linked to autism." Yet, while some scientific research shows an association between Tylenol use during pregnancy and autism, there's also scientific research that shows no association between the two. An "association" is also not the same as "causation." In other words, research showing an association between Tylenol use during pregnancy and autism does not mean one caused the other. Meanwhile, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine both say that acetaminophen is a safe way to treat pain and fever when used in moderation and in consultation with a physician during pregnancy. “I took Tylenol and my kids are just fine.” Or “I never took Tylenol and my kid is autistic.” Hear me out: Smoking is linked to lung cancer, But smoking is not the only thing that causes lung cancer. Also, smoking does not guarantee lung cancer. Wouldn’t it be reasonable that Tylenol is the same way? Tylenol is linked to autism, But Tylenol is not the only thing that causes autism. Also, Tylenol does not guarantee autism.

Chris Cuomo gets crushed by the facts on air after claiming the Harvard Tylenol study came to a “split decision” on whether there’s a link to autism. Marty Makary MD, MPH wasn’t about to let that claim slide. CUOMO: “So Harvard does a review of previous studies... and they came up with what I would term as a split decision in favor of studies that found that Tylenol may have an association with negative effects, including potential forms of autism.” MAKARY: “This research is NOT a split decision as you described. TWENTY-SEVEN studies found an association between prenatal use of acetaminophen and autism. There were thirteen studies that went the other way, but the authors concluded that higher quality studies FAVORED an association. “And if I can just quote the dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, my former institution: ‘There is a CAUSAL relationship between prenatal acetaminophen and the neurodegenerative disorders of ADHD and autism spectrum disorder.’” In no context ever is 27 studies vs. 13 a “split decision.” If this were a boxing match, it would be a unanimous decision in favor of the autism link.
