Remembering Chris Kyle. Chris Kyle was a highly decorated U.S. Navy SEAL sniper, widely recognized as the most lethal sniper in American military history. Born on April 8, 1974, in Odessa, Texas, Kyle developed a passion for hunting and firearms early in life. After a bull-riding injury ended his rodeo aspirations, he enlisted in the Navy in 1999 and joined the elite SEAL Team 3. During his military career, Kyle served four combat tours in Iraq, where he achieved 160 confirmed kills, earning him the nickname “The Legend” among fellow service members and “The Devil of Ramadi” among insurgents. His exceptional marksmanship and bravery earned him two Silver Stars and five Bronze Stars with Valor. In 2012, Kyle published his autobiography, American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, which became a bestseller and was later adapted into a 2014 film directed by Clint Eastwood, starring Bradley Cooper as Kyle. After retiring from the Navy in 2009, Kyle dedicated himself to helping fellow veterans cope with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) by organizing therapeutic shooting outings. Tragically, on February 2, 2013, Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield were shot and killed at a Texas shooting range by Eddie Ray Routh, a former Marine suffering from PTSD whom they were trying to help. Routh was later convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Kyle’s legacy endures through his contributions to military service and his efforts to support veterans in their transition to civilian life.
