The only thing worse than Homeopathy? Scientists on the internet without any knowledge on clinical medical practice, selling supplements that they endorse, using misinformation masquerading as "solid peer reviewed science." Check this video out, when Huberman bullshits everyone in just half a minute on the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast. Before I go on, please remember this The Bullshit Asymmetry Principle, also known as Brandolini’s Law, states that the amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it. Which means, I have to put extra effort just to debunk the 36 seconds of that podcast. First, a little about sleep disorders Sleep disorders are of different types and due to different causes. The diagnosis is simply not "I can't sleep" and so here, take this sleep cocktail. Many patients come with sleep disorders that are associated with other conditions. For example, cirrhosis patients have sleep disorders that require management with ammonia lowering therapies and severe cases can only be reversed with a liver transplant. Patients with alcohol use disorders have sleep disorders that require management with de-addiction therapies along with sedatives. Sleep disorders in the ICU set up has different causes. People with mental health disorders have associated sleep disorders. Certain sleep disorders have no identifiable causes and are called "idiopathic." Which means, coming on a podcast and blindly giving out a "sleep cocktail" to millions of viewers, who may be suffering from a sleep disorder which has an as yet unidentified cause, is one of the most foolish things one can do. And Huberman, not being an actual clinical doctor, makes that exact mistake. Huberman claims (very generally and casually), melatonin helps you to go to sleep, but does not maintain sleep. But "solid peer reviewed" studies have much more to say about melatonin. Melatonin improved sleep onset latency and total sleep time in children/adolescents with neurodevelopmental disorders. Melatonin also improved and sleep onset latency and total sleep time in adults with delayed sleep phase disorder. Treatment with melatonin has positive effects on sleep quality in adults with respiratory diseases, metabolic disorders, primary sleep disorders, not with mental disorders, neurodegenerative diseases and other diseases. This meta-analysis demonstrated that melatonin decreases sleep onset latency, increases total sleep time and improves overall sleep quality. Another large meta-analysis showed that melatonin dosing and timing matters: for circadian phase advancement, an earlier time and smaller dose, but for sleep quality/consolidation a larger and later dose seemed appropriate. See here: So melatonin does increase total sleep time, total sleep quality and reduces time to sleep and has beneficial effects in specific groups of patients. Now the "solid peer reviewed studies" on the cocktail - which Huberman claims on three supplements - magnesium threonate, apigenin and L-theanine. Unfortunately, such "solid peer-reviewed papers" DO NOT EXIST. Lets see. Magnesium supplements: First of all, there is no conclusive evidence that magnesium, dietary or supplemented has any actual effect on sleep. Randomized clinical trials showed an uncertain association between magnesium supplementation and sleep disorders. See here: Forget sleep, magnesium has absolutely no evidence for involvement even in mood disorders. See here: This review confirms that the quality of literature is substandard for physicians to make well-informed recommendations on usage of oral magnesium for older adults with insomnia. See here: Apigenin (from Chamomille): The possible sleep inducing effects of apigenin is still speculative. There are absolutely no solid peer reviewed studies or evidence for benefits of apigenin in sleep as Huberman claims. See here: A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial showed that chamomille DID NOT have conclusive effects on sleep. See here: Even better, a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials and quasi-randomized trials showed that there was very little evidence to show effect of chamomille on insomnia. See here: L-theanine supplements: There is absolutely NO study or data to suggest that L-theanine is useful for sleep induction, improving sleep quality or increasing total sleep time. The only studies that are of "better quality" shows that L-theanine "maybe" useful in reducing anxiety/ stress levels due to caffeine at night. See here and here The only other "study" on L-theanine which was done on mice and not humans showed effects only on brain related biomarkers and were not applicable in the clinical sense to humans - And coming to SOLID EVIDENCE on the "Huberman cocktail" - there is absolutely nothing in published literature to confirm that it works and there is no convincing mode of action of this cocktail in humans. A large systematic review and meta-analysis showed that Cognitive-Behavior Therapy for Insomnia was the best and not some random supplements proclaimed on a podcast by half-baked scientists who are full time supplement sellers. See here: There are basic scientists, with no or half-baked clinical practice knowledge, trying to sell you a bunch of useless supplements that they endorse for a paid-commission, using "science-sounding" words without any practical, rational or logical meaning; and push untested and unregulated therapies that are NEVER recommended, approved or promoted by any active, medical, scientific clinical societies worldwide. They are worse than pseudoscience peddlers. Be aware of where you find your health information. There is pseudoscience, but then there is also another terrible type of misinformation: BAD SCIENCE.

WHY YOU WAKE UP IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT Your brain has 20,000 neurons clustered in the hypothalamus. They form the suprachiasmatic nucleus. This is your master clock. It's been running since before birth. At 25, this clock kept you unconscious until morning. At 65, the same clock runs on less melatonin, weaker signals, and a rhythm that physically shifted 2-3 hours earlier. It fires a wake signal between 2-4 a.m. Four systems inside your body shifted with age. They converge at the same hour every night. The thoughts that arrive at 3 a.m. feel different from the same thoughts at 3 p.m. because your brain runs a different program in the dark. The part that would normally tell you those thoughts aren't emergencies is still asleep. THE CLOCK MOVED FORWARD The suprachiasmatic nucleus generates a near 24-hour rhythm controlling when you feel alert and when you feel sleepy. In young adults, peak sleepiness arrives around 11 p.m. Peak alertness arrives around 9-10 a.m. Blue light at 480 nanometers activates melanopsin cells in the retina. These cells send signals directly to the suprachiasmatic nucleus, synchronizing your clock to the day-night cycle. With age, the clock shifts earlier. This is circadian phase advance. The sleepiness signal arrives at 7-8 p.m. instead of 11 p.m. The wake signal arrives at 3-4 a.m. instead of 6-7 a.m. The entire sleep-wake window moves forward 2-3 hours. The suprachiasmatic nucleus itself degrades. Neurons deteriorate. The amplitude of the circadian signal weakens. Peaks become shallower. Troughs become less deep. The radio station loses transmitter power until the signal becomes fuzzy and inconsistent. The clock's sensitivity to light cues diminishes through two mechanisms. The aging lens yellows and thickens, filtering more blue light before it reaches the melanopsin cells. The suprachiasmatic neurons themselves respond less robustly to whatever signal does arrive. Weaker input through a cloudier window. Less responsive neurons processing that input. The clock drifts. When the circadian clock drifts without strong light cues, it drifts earlier. Phase advance is the default direction of an unanchored aging clock. MELATONIN COLLAPSED The pineal gland releases melatonin at night to initiate and maintain sleep. This hormone declines with age. The pineal gland calcifies gradually over decades, reducing functional tissue and capacity to produce melatonin. By 65, nighttime melatonin levels can be one-third to one-quarter of what they were at 30. Sometimes less. Melatonin doesn't just initiate sleep. It maintains depth and continuity across the full night. When melatonin is low, sleep is shallower, more fragmented, more vulnerable to interruption. Even if you fall asleep at a reasonable hour, low melatonin cannot hold you through to morning. Your body tries to put you to sleep at 8 p.m. and wake you at 3 a.m. That's a 7-hour sleep window. It might be enough sleep for your shifted clock. But you fight the 8 o'clock drowsiness. Social life, television, family, habit. You stay up until 10 or 11. The clock doesn't adjust to your social schedule. It fires the wake signal at 3 regardless. The clock runs on light and biology, not preferences. You lost 2-3 hours from the front of your sleep window by staying up late. The alarm still goes off on the original schedule. The 3 a.m. waking isn't a malfunction. It's your shifted clock doing exactly what it was programmed to do. This is social jet lag. The gap between your biological clock time and your social clock time creates the same physiological mismatch as flying across two or three time zones. Your body is in one time zone. Your social life is in another. The drowsiness you fight at 8 p.m. is your body's genuine sleep onset signal. The waking at 3 a.m. is your body's genuine wake signal. The problem isn't the signals. The problem is overriding one without being able to override the other. There's a compounding factor. The shifted clock means your body wants to sleep earlier. The reduced melatonin means it cannot hold sleep as deeply or as long. You're caught between two problems: a clock that fires the wake signal too early and a chemical supply that cannot maintain the sleep signal through the full night. Even if you went to bed at 8, the reduced melatonin might still fail to hold you past 3 or 4. The clock shifted the window. The melatonin shrank it. DEEP SLEEP DISAPPEARED Sleep cycles through stages roughly every 90 minutes. Light sleep, deeper sleep, deeper sleep, then REM. The stage that matters most for feeling rested is slow-wave sleep, stage N3, the deepest phase. Brainwaves drop to large, slow delta oscillations at 0.5-4 hertz. During slow-wave sleep, the glymphatic system activates. Cerebrospinal fluid flushes through brain tissue along channels that open when neurons shrink slightly during deep sleep. This clears metabolic waste: adenosine, the molecule that builds sleep pressure during the day, and amyloid beta proteins, the plaques associated with Alzheimer's disease. Growth hormone pulses during N3. Tissue repair peaks. Memory consolidation occurs. The hippocampus replays the day's experiences and transfers them to long-term cortical storage. This is the sleep that makes you feel like you actually slept. At 25, roughly 20% of the night is spent in slow-wave sleep. By 65, that drops to 10-15%. By 75, some people get almost none. My sleep tracker tells me that I almost never get less than 30%... and I'm 60. It is possible to have restorative deep sleep no matter what your age is. In my case even at lower sleep duration. High energy availability alsp plays a big role. The slow wave generating circuits in the medial prefrontal cortex usually deteriorate with age, producing weaker and less frequent delta oscillations. The deep sleep itself becomes shallower. The waves are smaller. The duration shorter. The restorative process is less complete. If deep sleep is the period when the brain clears amyloid beta, then reduced deep sleep means reduced clearance. Less deep sleep leads to more amyloid, which leads to less deep sleep, which leads to more amyloid. The relationship is bidirectional and self-reinforcing. If you never feel fully rested no matter how many hours you spend in bed, if 8 hours produces the recovery that 6 hours used to produce, if you wake in the morning with the sense that something was missing from the night, the missing component may be slow wave sleep. The hours were there. The depth was not. Slow-wave sleep that remains concentrates in the first half of the night, the first two to three sleep cycles. By 2-3 a.m., most of the deep sleep budget has been spent. What remains for the second half of the night is lighter stage one and stage two sleep, interspersed with REM. Light sleep has a dramatically lower arousal threshold. Stimuli that would not have registered during slow-wave sleep can push you above the waking threshold in light sleep. A slight temperature change in the room. A bathroom urge from a bladder that fills faster with age. A noise from outside. Even the natural shift in body position. You wake at 3 a.m. partly because the sleep you're in at 3 a.m. is physiologically different from the sleep you're in at midnight. The fortress walls got thinner as the night progressed. By 3 o'clock, you're sleeping behind a screen door instead of a vault. You could sleep through thunderstorms at 30. Now you wake at the sound of a refrigerator cycling on. The physics isn't about the noise. It's about the stage of sleep you're in when the noise arrives. At midnight, during slow-wave sleep, your arousal threshold is high. The brain runs delta waves that suppress responsiveness to external stimuli. At 3 a.m. in stage 1 or stage 2, the threshold has dropped to a fraction of its midnight level. The same sound that the sleeping brain would have filtered at midnight wakes you at 3 because the brain is no longer running the program that filters it. CORTISOL ARRIVED EARLY Your body runs a cortisol rhythm called the cortisol awakening response. In the final hours of sleep, the adrenal glands begin increasing cortisol output, preparing the body for waking. Mobilizing glucose into the bloodstream. Priming the immune system for the day's pathogens. Raising blood pressure and heart rate toward daytime operating levels. In a young adult, this cortisol rise begins around 4-5 a.m. and peaks roughly 30-45 minutes after waking. With age, the rise begins earlier. 2-3 a.m. in many older adults. Low-carb diets can also trigger a relatively strong cortisol release, waking you up early.. The same circadian phase advance that shifted the sleep-wake window also shifted the cortisol curve. Every rhythm the suprachiasmatic nucleus controls moves in the same direction. Cortisol alone doesn't wake you. But combined with already light sleep and a shifted circadian clock, the cortisol rise adds a third signal, pushing you toward wakefulness at precisely the hour when the other two systems have already weakened your defenses. Three systems converging on the same window. The clock says wake up. The sleep stage says the walls are thin. The cortisol says the body is preparing for morning. All three signals arrive at 3 a.m. Not by coincidence. All three are governed by the same shifted circadian master clock. If the waking comes at almost exactly the same time every night, not randomly scattered across the early morning hours but clustered within the same 30-minute window, that precision is the signature of a circadian event. Cortisol is antagonistic to melatonin. The two hormones suppress each other. Cortisol inhibits melatonin production. Melatonin suppresses cortisol. In a young person with high melatonin and correctly timed cortisol, the two hormones hand off smoothly. Melatonin dominates the night. Cortisol rises toward morning. The transition is seamless. In an aging body with depleted melatonin and early-arriving cortisol, the handoff happens too soon. When cortisol starts rising at 2-3 a.m. and melatonin is already low, the biochemical conditions for staying asleep collapse. The melatonin that should be holding you under is insufficient. The cortisol that should not be arriving for another two hours is already here. Two hormones that are supposed to hand off like relay runners, one finishing as the other begins, instead collide in the same hour because both shifted on the same aging clock. The balance tips toward waking. THE WORST THOUGHTS ARRIVE When you wake at 6-7 a.m., cortisol is high, light enters your eyes, and your prefrontal cortex comes online in its task-oriented mode. You think about what to do, what to eat, where to go. Executive function engages. The thinking is directed, practical, forward-looking. Problems that exist at 7 a.m. feel like problems to be solved. Manageable, bounded, addressable. When you wake at 3 a.m. in the dark with no tasks to perform and no light to signal daytime, a different network activates. The default mode network. The brain's self-referential processing system fires in the absence of external input and directed task. This is the rumination network. It runs replays of conversations you had years ago. It generates worry scenarios about events that may never happen. It revisits regrets from decades past with a vividness that feels more real than memory should. It rehearses confrontations that will never take place. It asks questions that have no answers at any hour, let alone at 3 a.m. At 3 a.m., the default mode network has nothing competing with it. No light. No task. No external stimulation. No social interaction. And the executive prefrontal cortex that would normally evaluate, contextualize, and override the rumination is still partially offline. The prefrontal cortex is the last brain region to fully activate upon waking. It requires light exposure and time to reach full operating capacity. This is the region that says this thought is not an emergency. This worry is not proportionate to reality. This problem can wait until morning and will look different then. At 3 a.m., that region is sleeping while the default mode network runs at full power. You're awake enough to think. But the thinking is the uncontrolled, self-referential, catastrophizing kind. The system that controls and contextualizes thought has not caught up with the system that generates it. The worry loop feels more intense at 3 a.m. than the same thoughts would feel at 3 p.m. because the brain regions that regulate emotional response and assign proportionality are not yet operational. You're running the worry software without the control software. The thoughts feel urgent and catastrophic because the part of your brain that would tell you they are neither is still asleep. The thoughts are not true in the way they feel true. They're running on hardware that cannot evaluate them yet. The 3 a.m. thoughts have a specific quality that daytime worry doesn't. A sense of certainty. Of inevitability. Of problems being larger and solutions being fewer than they actually are. The distortion isn't emotional. It's architectural. The brain regions that generate worry are online. The brain regions that evaluate worry are not. By 7 a.m., when the prefrontal cortex has fully activated and light has entered the eyes and cortisol has reached its appropriate peak, the same problems that felt catastrophic at 3 a.m. feel manageable. Nothing changed about the problems. Everything changed about which brain regions are processing them. If you've lain in the dark at 3 a.m. and felt that your problems were larger, your regrets sharper, your fears more certain than they would be by breakfast, that wasn't weakness. It wasn't anxiety disorder. It was the default mode network running without prefrontal supervision, amplified by cortisol that arrived early, in a brain that had already run through its deep sleep budget and could not pull you back under. Four systems, all doing what the physics of aging programmed them to do, all converging on the same hour. Andrew Huberman described the worst morning routine in five steps. Stay in bed, recline, skip sunlight, drink coffee too early, multitask. Every one of them targets the same 30-minute neural event. Between minute 0 and 60 after waking, your body runs the cortisol awakening response. A healthy pulse lifts cortisol by about 50%, sets a 14-to-16 hour timer for melatonin release, primes immune function, and anchors alertness for the whole day. Miss the window and your circadian clock drifts until you go back to sleep. The rest of the day runs at 70%. Sunlight is the trigger. Light has to hit melanopsin cells at the bottom of your retina to signal the suprachiasmatic nucleus to fire cortisol. Through a glass window you need 50 times longer. A phone screen is hundreds of times too dim to count. Curtains closed plus head down means the pathway never activates. The pulse either never fires or fires weakly, with effects rippling across the next 16 hours. Reclining kills the second lever. Studies recording directly from the locus coeruleus and the reticular activating system show alertness drops with reclining and rises with sitting forward. Those melanopsin cells sit in the bottom of your retina for a reason. They evolved to see the sun overhead. Chin down, eyes down, horizontal body: the brainstem reads this signal set as "still asleep" and keeps you in sleep-adjacent arousal for hours. Coffee at minute 10 kills the third. Adenosine is the sleep pressure molecule cleared by that cortisol pulse. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors before cortisol gets the chance to clear them naturally. Two to three hours later the caffeine metabolizes, uncleared adenosine floods the receptors all at once, and you crash at 11am. Drink a second cup to patch the crash and you've shifted your cortisol peak four hours late. Which means your melatonin shifts too. Which means you can't sleep that night. Phone scrolling kills the fourth. Morning dopamine baseline is the lowest it will be all day. Ten minutes of feed delivers hundreds of micro-rewards before breakfast is ready. You've spent peak dopamine on algorithm-selected stimuli. Every real task in the workday that follows registers as a downgrade against that baseline. Multitasking kills the fifth. The prefrontal cortex boots last after waking. Task-switching between texts, emails, and random notifications during the boot window trains the attention network to run fragmented all day. Sophie Leroy's 2009 attention residue research showed each switch leaves cognitive spillover that degrades the next task. Start the morning with 20 switches and focus is a rented asset for the next 12 hours. Five random-looking habits, five targeted attacks on the same mechanism. Light triggers the pulse. Posture amplifies it. Caffeine cooperates with it. Dopamine protects what it builds. Focus compounds what it anchors. 20 minutes outside with your phone in the other room fixes all five at once.

Your body runs a nightly deuterium depletion cycle during sleep. Most people are switching it off without knowing it. During sleep, your body shifts toward fat oxidation, activates peroxisomes, and produces deuterium-depleted metabolic water. Sleep is the one time your body is forced to fast. Dr. Laszlo Boros — Hungarian medical biochemist, retired professor at UCLA School of Medicine, author of 100+ peer-reviewed papers, and one of the world's leading deuterium researchers — puts it simply on the Sleep Is A Skill podcast: "When you sleep, you can do this simply because you don't walk through the freezer — unless you do sleepwalking. What you do is leave your body in a fasting state, where you don't eat for 6 or 8 hours, and you get into a metabolic state called burning fat or metabolic ketosis. After 2 or 3 hours, glucose and carbohydrates are limited — and then you have to burn fat to produce energy and heat during sleep." That's when the real work begins. REM activity and muscle movement burn through glucose and glycogen reserves. Once glucose availability falls, metabolism shifts toward fat oxidation. Breathing slows to 6-8 inhalations per minute — roughly half the daytime rate. Hemoglobin-delivered oxygen falls. The body increasingly relies on dissolved oxygen circulating in the blood — a small but sufficient supply that doesn't require active breathing to access. But something prepares the body for this transition before sleep even begins. Yawning. According to Boros, yawning is a biological preparation mechanism. A yawn is a held inhalation — it pressurizes the chest cavity, squeezing more dissolved oxygen into the blood like pressurizing a soda bottle. This dissolved oxygen is what peroxisomes need to burn fat. But peroxisomes only activate once glucose is gone. Yawning prepares the oxygen supply. Fat must be the available fuel. Boros: "Sleep starts with yawning." Peroxisomes are small organelles that can only burn fat. They cannot utilize carbohydrates. They cannot utilize amino acids. They use dissolved O₂ directly. They produce hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) from fat. This hydrogen peroxide is inherently low in deuterium because it comes from fat. Catalase — the fastest enzymatic reaction in biological systems — then converts that hydrogen peroxide into metabolic water while recycling oxygen in the process. The result is fresh deuterium-depleted metabolic water. Boros calls sleep a metabolic miracle. Every night your body activates pathways that burn fat, deplete deuterium, and preserve the integrity of the mitochondrial nanomotors — all without requiring food intake. But here is the twist: If you eat too close to bed — or wake up and eat during the night — glucose remains available for longer. The transition into fat oxidation is delayed. The peroxisomal cycle starts later. Every hour of delayed ketosis is an hour of missed nocturnal deuterium depletion. This is not theoretical. Boros works with military personnel and emergency crews in Europe and the United States on exactly this problem. Emergency workers return from a call, eat under stress, then try to sleep. Glucose reloads. The peroxisomal cycle never fully activates. Deuterium accumulates. Sleep quality degrades. This is one of the reasons emergency workers retire early. Their disrupted sleep and stress-eating patterns create chronic metabolic confusion — the body never gets the nightly deuterium cleanup it evolved to run. The opposite is also true. According to Boros, people following ketogenic diets often report needing one to two fewer hours of sleep while waking up more rested. Boros explains why: Less deuterium accumulates during the day. The nocturnal depletion cycle runs more efficiently during the night. The metabolic cleanup process finishes faster. The required sleep duration is shorter. This is one reason I stop eating at least 3 hours before bed. And it is one reason I treat sleep consistency as a non-negotiable. I am in bed before 10pm. Usually closer to 9:30pm. Long post, please kindly read them. it would just take less than 2 minute of your time. A Midnight Call 26 Oct 2024 It was 2 a.m., the world outside silent and still. I was bone-tired from a grueling day, my head heavy with the weight of it all. I’d just slipped into sleep when my phone suddenly buzzed, vibrating insistently on the bedside table. At first, I ignored it, thinking it could wait until morning. But then it rang again, and something in its persistence made me pick up. “Hello?” I answered, my voice feeble with exhaustion. “Is this Advocate Ashwin?” A man's voice, firm yet urgent, came through the line. “Yes” I tried to shake the sleep from my voice. “This is Shivakumar, Sub Inspector from **** police station” he said, his tone grave. Instantly, I sat up, alert. “Tell me, sir. How can I help?” “We’re on the highway,” he began, voice thick with a mix of anger and sadness. “We found a young street calf, hardly a 5 months old. He was hit by a speeding vehicle, left to cry and bleed on the road. But that wasn’t the end of it,” he said, voice tight with contained rage. “Another vehicle came and hit him again, dragged him some distance, and left him there, barely breathing.” A surge of anger rose within me at the cruelty of it all, but I pushed it down. I had to act quickly. “Sir, please, can you have one of your men stay by him until we arrive?” I asked. “I’ll send a vehicle right away.” The Sub Inspector didn’t hesitate. “Yes, we’ll stay with him. He’s suffering. He needs us.” I quickly arranged for a team to be dispatched. By the time we reached the calf, the compassionate officers were there, standing guard by the frail figure lying on the road. He was so small, barely 4 month old and his breaths were shallow. His eyes, wide with pain and fear, were searching—perhaps for some kindness, some solace. The officers and our staff lifted him with the utmost care, placing him onto a plank, and our vehicle sped back to the gaushala. Our veterinary team had been waiting, ready with bandages and medicine, their faces showing both worry and determination. Gently, they began to examine him, murmuring soothing words, treating each bruise and wound as if it were their own. We all prayed intensely to Sri Krishna to help us recover the calf. Though he was bruised and had torn ligaments, thankfully no bones were broken. But the journey wasn’t over yet. For days, he lay in recovery, eyes watching us, filled with a fragile hope. Slowly, day by day, he began to show signs of strength, taking tiny steps, even nibbling on food placed before him. today , it’s been a week since that call pierced the silence of the night. Our little calf is beginning to stand on his own, determined, with a spark in his eyes that wasn’t there before. His journey has been painful, but he’s coming through it, one small step at a time. In the stillness of that night, a life was saved because of the compassion of strangers—of officers, vets, and everyone who believed in his right to live. Watching him now, I’m reminded of the incredible power of kindness, even in the loneliest hours. This wouldn't have been possible without your support and blessings of Krishna!. Have you ever noticed that the lifestyle advice we give to IBD patients is often the same as general health advice? It's a simplifying realisation. Here are my six core pillars for a healthy lifestyle, whether you have IBD or not: ________ 1. Sleep Well Aim for 7-8 hours of actual sleep per night, not just time in bed. I use a Whoop to track mine, and I've learned I need an extra hour in bed to hit my sleep target. Measure your sleep - you might be surprised. ________ 2. Eat Right This sounds simple, but it's challenging in our current food environment. Any urban dwelling human spends most of his days dodging armies of delivery bikers bringing tepid fast food to people’s sofas. A whole ecosystem has come into existence to solve a problem we did not have. Here's what to aim for: • Cook from fresh ingredients when possible • Eat mostly plants +/- some good quality meats • Avoid processed foods where possible • Cook with healthy oils • Limit sugary foods • Try to eat communally - it's how we've evolved to eat. This is the cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet. If you have IBD, particularly small bowel Crohn’s disease, then much of this advice is turned on it’s head, as we look to limit fibre intake. I would say consult with your dietitian but we both know full well that this is a luxury that few people have, especially in the UK. ________ 3. Manage Stress Stress is unavoidable, so develop a system to handle it. This could be: • Talking to a friend • Journaling • Exercising • Meditating or practicing breathwork Find what works for you to sit with your emotions and deal with stress effectively. I have found a combination of exercise, journaling, and regular therapy works best for me. But like everyone, very much just a work in progress. In an ideal world I would recommend that IBD patients speak to a psychologist but this is something very few are able to access. One day maybe … until then hopefully these small pieces of advice are helpful. ________ 4. Exercise Regularly In my opinion, there's no better medicine than exercise. Aim for a mix of: • Cardio • Strength training • Stability/mobility work (especially important as we age) If you are new to exercise start slow and find something that you a) enjoy and b) can commit to on a regular basis. It might start with a 30 minute brisk walk each lunchtime. Those with dogs have a definite head-start here! There is some emerging evidence that exercising regularly may help patient with IBD stay in prolonged remission and avoid flares! ________ 5. Get Outside Spend time outdoors, preferably in nature. There's something uniquely beneficial about being in open spaces, living as we're meant to. ________ 6. Nurture Relationships Foster close friendships and family ties over time. Human existence is meant to be shared. In our increasingly tech-driven, solitary lives, it's crucial to remember the importance of human connection. These pillars can help you stay well physically, mentally, and spiritually, whether you're already healthy or living with a chronic illness like IBD. Many of these practices, particularly diet, stress management, and exercise, are great for your gut microbiome - which is especially crucial for those with IBD. ________ Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all approach. My hope is that you might find something in here helpful, wherever you are in your journey through life with, or without, IBD.

Vallée and the Closed System: Are We Prisoners? 🧠👽 Vallée: "Are We Being Taken Over by a Species from Somewhere in Space That's Vastly More Intelligent Than We Are?" 👽🧠 "..the simulation...was a new concept that I initially rejected." ~Vallée "Is it looking for us to try to interact with it as equals or with parity?" ~Scafish "Nobody says that to Congress, and I think Congress should hear it." ~Vallée If, "it's a closed system, we're like prisoners and something is going to happen to us, and there is very little we can do." ~Vallée Turn the thermostat dial. "If the temperature doesn't change, then I know I'm inside a control system. So, we can do the same thing with UFOs, but we have to react. We have to, number one, acknowledge that it exists, and number two, we have to react to it." ~Vallée ~~~ I've been wanting to share this one for a while... Vallée: "So, he said, the question you have to ask about UFOs is, number one, is it a natural system or an artificial system...control system. And if it is a control system, is it open or closed? In other words, are we being taken over by a species from somewhere in space that's vastly more intelligent than we are?" (I've never heard him even suggest that possibility.) Vallée: "You know, as Dr. Garry P. Nolan says, you know, people who have had ten, you know, scientific revolutions, or a hundred or a thousand, and come here with superior science to do something... And in which case, you know, it's a closed system, we're like prisoners and something is going to happen to us, and there is very little we can do. Or, is it an open system where we can, in fact, communicate with it. And if we can communicate with it, then the question for me as an information scientist is, what are the modalities of the interaction, you know? It's not just can we learn their language? And they say, you know, 'We come in peace to save mankind,' or something. Or 'We will give you the cure for cancer' or something. I don't think it's at that level." (Will we ever be able to get answers to these extremely important questions? If it's an open system, how do we communicate with it? How do we provoke it to react? We know it reacts to anything nuclear but we still don't know why. This is why we need the USG (and other governments) to present evidence that shows the masses this is real and extremely important for our species to investigate. If that evidence exists and is shown, we'll have an easier time getting the world's best minds to join the effort in figuring out the best way to answer these questions. We still may fail but we should at least try.) Vallée: "I think it's a meta-system. It's not a system. And that's my fear...if we can circle back to your earlier question about, you know, about NIDS and about BAASS, what we did for the government and what we did for the Defense Intelligence Agency. Half of the budget was spent developing, you know, a super database. And we don't know where it went. I mean, I'm not cleared to know where it went." (On the contractor (BAASS) side, Bigelow should have all copies of what AAWSAP produced. And on the DIA side, Lacatksi said he put all of the digital files in a specific place that he didn't name. As long as someone didn't delete it all, it should still be there. Vallée has said that the Capella database has about 250,000 cases from around the world.) Vallée: "But that would be a very interesting question, because the people who are getting [the database] are getting raw data, which we have very well organized, all in English. So they have the luxury of, you know, we had five translators from French, English, Portuguese, Russian, you know, everything was translated in a single structure across fourteen databases. "That's what we need to answer the question about the control system, and it's not being done. And we hired a whole team that we had trained to work on it. So to rebuild that will take the next ten or fifteen years. And nobody says that to Congress, and I think Congress should hear it, because it's our money." (As long as names and personal details are scrubbed from that database, there is no reason NOT to release it to the public. This way, we can take it and use AI to help decipher patterns and maybe answer some of these questions. Can Congress help us get access to that database?) Vallée: "When you ask, is it a control system? That's a big question." Peter Scafish Peter Skafish - "You asked, at one point, whether the system is open or closed, and you said, additionally, I believe, if it's open, that it would be possible to communicate back to it. And it sounds to me like that's the key question for you. Is, if you can understand what what the system of symbols is, or the modalities of communication, then you can understand enough to engage in some kind of communication, or at least give some kind of response to show that you understand." Vallée: "Yes." Scafish: "So then the question, and we have a member named Jacqueline, who has asked this. Could the system be stimulating us - provided there is such a system - to interact with it, more as subjects or agents than as something like animals or objects? Is it looking for us to try to interact with it as equals or with parity?" (When people report getting injured or sick from being in close proximity to UAP, it suggests to me that the phenomenon won't go out of its way to avoid affecting us in a negative manner if we get in their its/way (assuming it even knows that close encounters with UAP are not good for humans). Kind of like how we treat lower lifeforms. If we encounter a wild rabbit crossing the road, many of us will do our best to avoid it, but not if it means damaging our car or ourselves in an accident. It may ruin our day if we hit it, but it won't stop us from driving again in the future. Do NHI have bad days if their tech injures us or makes us sick? I have no clue.) Vallée: "Well, what I saw in the notes you gave me, is she was also asking: Is it a control system because we think it is? And that's a very interesting question. Because we react to the UFO phenomenon, or the UAP phenomenon. And, you know, at this point when I think about what I'm going to do next in this research, if I'm given the the opportunity to live a little longer, I'm not going to go back and write any more computer programs. There are better people to do that now, they have the data, and we're in a different phase now. We're in a whole different system. I have the luxury of doing some experiments I wanted to do for a long time." (Would have liked Scafish to ask him: What types of experiments?) Vallée: "So, if you think you are inside the control system, there are things that you can do. Or, if you think you're inside the simulation, you know, which was a new concept that I initially rejected, and then, you know, Ray's (Kurzweil?) work and others have brought it back to the forefront. And we have to ask that at the same time. Can we test it? How would you test it? Well, if, you know, I'm here in my apartment, and the temperature is constant in this apartment. But outside, I can see it's cold, or I can see the sun is out and it's warm, and how come it's constant here? So this would lead me to think that there is a control system, namely a thermostat, that is somewhere. "So I can start looking around the walls, and if I see dial, I can turn it, or I could start a fire and see what happens, see if the temperature changes. If the temperature doesn't change, then I know I'm inside a control system. So, we can do the same thing with UFOs, but we have to react. We have to, number one, acknowledge that it exists, and number two, we have to react to it."

And when people talk about AI compute, the conversation often stops at hardware specs, but it's more than just physical chips that win the game. It's also the software ecosystems supporting them. [00:00:18] Andrew Zigler: The prevailing strategy in the industry has been to build something like a walled garden. You know, something closed, proprietary locks, developers in. But AMD is betting on an entirely different play, open source acceleration, and with rock, their open source AI software stack. AMD is building not just hardware parity, but an innovation flywheel that's powered by the community with interoperability and the freedom to scale without all of that pesky lockin. Uh, super excited to chat about it. [00:01:07] Andrew Zigler: Amazing. Well, let's go ahead and dive right in with kind of what I laid it out with in the beginning, the idea of the moat and it being about speed. I wanna unpack that a bit because that came from you when you and I first spoke. And I, and I want to know, you know, how do you define speed inside of AMD beyond just things like hardware, benchmarks. [00:01:27] Anush Elangovan: Yeah, that's a very good question. So when we typically talk about speed, everyone's like, Hey, hardware benchmark specs, right? Like, uh, memory bandwidth or, or flops. And that is one important part of it, uh, AMD does very well. With that, we do have, a, a very good history of executing on that axis. [00:01:47] Anush Elangovan: But when I say speed is the moat, it is about, uh, how we prepare, how we build the muscle to run the race for a long time and run it fast. And it is [00:02:00] not about a single point in time that you've, you've beat some you know, benchmark and, and you declare victory. It's about building the ability to consistently develop and deliver. [00:02:13] Anush Elangovan: Both hardware and software innovation at scale and do it fast, right? Like, you know, we we're increasingly getting to a point where models come out and they're, uh, you know, a year or two ago it was like, Hey, they work on AMD on day zero, which is great, but now they are performing on AMD the day it releases, right? [00:02:32] Anush Elangovan: So, what does it take to Prefetch where the industry is going? Be prepared to intercept. At that point is what you know, I, I refer to as you know, the, the speed factor in, in creating this mode, right? And the mode is just shed all things that hold you back and run as fast as you can. [00:02:53] Anush Elangovan: Uh, because the pace of innovation that is, uh, being seen in, in AI [00:03:00] industries is just. Amazing. Right? And it's like, it's transformational at at how you generate electricity. It's transformational as at how you build data centers. It's transformational at how you deploy compute, networking. It's transformational at what kind of use cases you, you know, uh, use AI for. [00:03:17] Anush Elangovan: Uh, and for that, you need to be prepared to, see what comes tomorrow and be prepared to run the race tomorrow. [00:03:23] Andrew Zigler: Yeah, it's a really great perspective because it highlights that it's not just like a checkpoint that you run through. I like how you called out, like it's not just hitting that benchmark or being the best in class at that moment, in that snapshot, it's about having a. The throughput and about having that dedication to the idea and continuing to deliver on it. [00:03:43] Andrew Zigler: It's not just crossing the threshold, but it's also being the engine. And that's what, that's what protects a business. That is the moat, because the moat is that innovation layer, the faster and more, uh, future forward. That you can work and think, [00:04:00] you know, the better. Uh, we, we talk a lot about like future forward work styles. [00:04:04] Andrew Zigler: Like what are the things I could be doing right now today that are gonna be like, way more useful tomorrow? Let, let's abandon those, workflows that are older and that kind of like, that translates into. An advantage when you work that way. You know, what kind of things have you learned working with, uh, like across all spectrums of people who would use ROCm, right? [00:04:23] Andrew Zigler: You have like the developers, but then you also have the enterprises and you have this large span of adoptees, right? So what is the, what does that look like that you learn? [00:04:32] Anush Elangovan: Yeah, so, so the way I look at it is there are gonna be pockets of different, uh, you know, cadences, right? Like, so people who are deploying in enterprises, for example, right? The validation and how long it takes for them to deploy an LLM that's secure. It's, with guardrails, et cetera, maybe longer. [00:04:52] Anush Elangovan: but you still have to go through the process and you have to be prepared to like, walk that walk to deploy an enterprises. That doesn't mean it's [00:05:00] not fast, that's as fast as you can do for that industry, right? And if you are deploying AI in healthcare, right, it's, it's got its own, uh, cycle. [00:05:07] Anush Elangovan: but in each one of these, you want to see how, like, go down to the essence of what is it that you actually have to do. And, you know, I, I, I like how you framed it. It's like it's, you shed your prior assumptions of how things are done, right. And, and you kind of build up from a, uh, first principles, uh, approach to say, this is how I could use AI to unlock, whatever I'm doing. [00:05:33] Anush Elangovan: And, and, some of it, you know, it's good to really step back and look at. Just question every part of it, right? Like right now you're getting chat GPT and, Gemini competing for like, math, olympiads and, and, uh, college, uh, reasoning, uh, tests. Right? And, and those are like that, that is amazing and increasingly like complex tasks that they're trying to do. [00:05:58] Anush Elangovan: But there may also be like. [00:06:00] More mundane things that AI could, could get applied to. Right? And, and so when we think about shedding old ways, you wanna shed it not just in like the tip of the spear. It's like, you know, I'm gonna see what's the frontier model. It's also, it could be something as simple as. [00:06:18] Anush Elangovan: How do you choose a, a movie, uh, you know, like a recommendation system, right? Or, or, uh, an automated, uh, flight, uh, rebooking system. So the moment, you know, your flight is late, uh, right now it's a notification, right? It's like, oh, you got a text message saying your flight's late. And I got that like three times this week. [00:06:38] Anush Elangovan: But anyway, uh, and, and, and, and, I was just like, okay, so if I were to rethink this. All this MCPs that we have that should be hooked up into an MCP that says, your flight's delayed. Here are your options. If you want, you know, these are the paid options. Yeah. Here are the free options. This will get you back into your you know, Toronto airport [00:07:00] tonight. [00:07:00] Anush Elangovan: Or if you stay, here's a hotel plus this, plus this, plus. It's just like, go ahead is all I should say. Versus now I'm like, okay, can someone, you know, can I call a travel agent? Can I do this? Can I go online and log into And you know, so we gotta fundamentally rethink even those like small, nuances of, things that we do that can be automated out and AI is really, really good at doing something like this, right? Maybe I just explained an AI startup idea right now. Somebody should just start that. [00:07:29] Andrew Zigler: I think you did. Yeah, you definitely did. Someone, one of our listeners is definitely going to lift that off of you. I, I, I, you know, I hate being on the receiving end of those. You feel a little helpless and then you have to like, follow the whole flow. So I know what you mean. Like I, I like how you called out that the build and this like. [00:07:45] Andrew Zigler: Where speed is your moat and the innovation layer is protecting you, is what makes you better than your competitors. How you scale that and you bring that to market. So by understanding the problems that you're solving, uh, throwing away those older assumptions, but also [00:08:00] recognizing that like. We're building every single day, new things and new ways of using stuff that we're still figuring out the implications of. [00:08:08] Andrew Zigler: And so when you have a lot of velocity and you're introducing a lot of new ideas, and maybe you have that workflow now that automatically rebook your flight off of your late flight text message, and uh, I know I would certainly use it, but you know, what kind of philosophies guide the way that y'all think about building this ecosystem to manage that stability while letting folks. [00:08:29] Andrew Zigler: Play with the speed and the assumptions and the airplane re bookings. [00:08:34] Anush Elangovan: so, so I think, you know, we need to peel one layer down, right? and the philosophy is, Hey, we, we just discovered electricity, right? And you know what we're gonna do? We are gonna make motors, uh, or dynamos, right? Like engines. Uh, sure. We don't know if it's gonna be a Ferrari that you're gonna make, or it's a a a a dump truck. [00:08:57] Anush Elangovan: That's good for doing this. But let's [00:09:00] let, which is also required, right? You need a dump truck. You need a garbage truck. And, [00:09:04] Andrew Zigler: Yeah. You need the [00:09:04] Anush Elangovan: course you need, uh, a Ferrari for a midlife crisis, right? So, [00:09:09] Andrew Zigler: precisely. [00:09:10] Anush Elangovan: But, but my, uh, point is what do we build next? And, uh, and this is what I meant by like, okay, let's, let's take those baby steps to build the. [00:09:20] Anush Elangovan: Infrastructure that's required that we know we'll have to use, right? So, so if I just discovered electricity, okay, great. Now one, how do I save this electricity and how do I use it? So there's battery technology, so you need to do something like that, right? Like so. But then you also want to make it into an actionable thing. [00:09:37] Anush Elangovan: You want to make it for like automobiles, or you wanna use it for, you know, powering, uh, entire cities. So it is that transformational. So, uh, AI is that transformational. So, if you distill down, it'll, it'll come down to how do we think about, what we can do with this this fundamental technology that, We may not be aware of what it [00:10:00] is gonna unlock next, but at least you know the next step is clear, right? It's like a dense fog, you know, it's gonna be like, it, it's the right path. You see the light, but it's kind of like out there and, and the steps you're taking are concrete and you're like, okay, this is good. [00:10:16] Anush Elangovan: I, this is better than where I was or where we were. So we are moving forward. So you can build with the. Intuition from what you see in the short term and a tactical view, but towards what you think the future is gonna be. [00:10:28] Andrew Zigler: Right. You almost like we're all in this like fog of war, right? And like you said, you're reaching out and you're trying to step through it. You could think of it too, as like you're in the dark and your hands are up in front of you and you know that. You're, you're not gonna run your face into a wall because your hands are out in front of you, but you're not gonna maybe do much better than that. [00:10:45] Andrew Zigler: So that's kind of like, I think the eco, the, the industry, the world that we find ourselves in, uh, and we all have to, then this becomes the power of an ecosystem, of a group of people working together to create that layer of, [00:11:00] uh, of establishing the [00:11:01] Anush Elangovan: exactly. And I, I, I just, instead of, you know, saying fog of war I describe it as like, you're in this. Beautiful valley with like a morning, uh, fog that's in. You can smell the flowers. You, you hear the birds. You are like, okay, it's, we are in like, uh, utopian paradise and yes, I just need to like, continue the walk, right? [00:11:24] Anush Elangovan: and then move forward with that, conviction that you're in the right spot. [00:11:27] Andrew Zigler: Yeah. So let's talk about that ecosystem world. This nice, I love how you describe it, this grassy side of a hill in the morning that's covered in some mist and maybe we can't see 30 feet in one direction, but it sure is a beautiful hill and it smells nice. And so we're all here. And why is, in that world, why is. [00:11:44] Andrew Zigler: You know, open source, their strategic advantage that y'all are going for in the AI hardware market. And, and then how does like ROCm turn that into wins for people within that ecosystem? [00:11:56] Anush Elangovan: you know, the, the way we look at it is this, is kind of like how I view [00:12:00] AI and the ecosystem, right? But, but it is for everyone to enjoy. Uh, and so we do want to make sure that. You know, it is, uh, beneficial for everyone. [00:12:09] Anush Elangovan: The ecosystem can come in and, and innovate. It's an open innovation engine. and uh, it is very different from, you know, having a walled garden with, Hey, only I know how to do this and I'm gonna do it and throw it over the fence and you can use it or keep walking, right? So we'd like to be good citizens that way, but also. [00:12:30] Anush Elangovan: Uh, it is self-fulfilling in a way, right? Like it, the, the pace at which we innovate with open source is unmatched. Like, you know, our serving engines are like VLLM and, and sg l. Those things, uh, those frameworks are like super, super aggressive in terms of how fast they come out with features and how fast they can you know, get performant models out. [00:12:52] Anush Elangovan: And that compared with what, uh, you'd get from, you know, the likes of like T-R-T-L-L-M or something is always lagging, right? Because you [00:13:00] just can't keep up with you know, 200 commits a week just on one particular model to get that model really performant [00:13:06] Andrew Zigler: And, and, and in that world where, you know, everyone can enjoy the winds of this, what kind of customer stories or innovation stories have really stood out to you and excite you about building and creating this place for developers? [00:13:19] Anush Elangovan: Yeah. So I think the parts that are super exciting for me are when when we get to see a customer that is first skeptical. Then they start a little like, okay, fine, we'll give you a chance. Uh, we do a simple, uh, POC and then they're like, huh, this seems to work. Yeah, we told you it works. [00:13:42] Anush Elangovan: You don't have to change one line of code. Really? Yes, no need to change one line of code. Okay, let's try a production workload. So then they try it. Oh, you're more performant than the competition. Yes. We're more performant than, than the competition. So how much does it cost? And we're like, oh, it's your TCO is better with, uh, [00:14:00] AMD. [00:14:00] Anush Elangovan: So again, they're like, wow, okay, good. So now how do we deploy at scale? And then we go deploy it at scale. And when they give a thumbs up on that and they say, this is good, right? That's when you know, you, you see it go full circle from like, oh, we, we've never heard about AMD to like actually deploy to tens of thousands of GPUs In the order of a few months, right? It, it, it really is fascinating to see and very exciting and invigorating to [00:14:28] Andrew Zigler: Yeah. At like a great exposure to a lot of interesting problems. And, and then people using the infrastructure, the, the technology available to solve those problems. Really specific problems by the way, that's often why they're bringing their data and AI to it, uh, is because it is really specific and important for them. [00:14:45] Andrew Zigler: And there's a, a lot I think that other engineering orgs can learn and even emulate from AMD's success and, and having this open source ecosystem and it causing this acceleration within. You [00:15:00] know, uh, customers and enterprises that use and adopt the tools and, and, and that creates an advantage. And that goes back to why we're talking and like the real thesis of our conversation today. [00:15:10] Andrew Zigler: So how do you think engineering leaders that are listening to this and obviously tapping into this great success AMD has from an open source flywheel, how do you think other, other folks building in the same space can foster that open, first, that open source oriented culture in order to, you know, accelerate their innovation goals? [00:15:29] Anush Elangovan: Yeah, that's a very good question. So the startup that um, was acquired by AMD we, we built, I mean, we started off doing iot stuff and you know, smart ring and all that, right? But in the, the end of like, uh, and not the end, the last six years of the company was building ML compilers. [00:15:47] Anush Elangovan: And ml, ML compilers are like super, uh, complicated, sophisticated, advanced algorithms, dah, dah, dah. but it was all open source, right? So our VCs were like, wait, what do you mean your core [00:16:00] IP is open source? And um, the speed is the moat applied even then, right? It was just like, yes, if you have an idea that. [00:16:08] Anush Elangovan: Because someone saw this idea that you are, they're gonna be able to catch up, then you probably have the wrong idea anyway. But if they are, you know, you execute and they're gonna catch up, that you should assume they're gonna catch up. Right? So you gotta move forward. So keeping it open source is super important. [00:16:25] Anush Elangovan: But also to your question on like, you know, the learnings from an AMD standpoint, right? If there are, hard problems, I'd say dig in and work through it, right? Like there's no way but through it, right? That should be the simple mentality. And more, uh, frequently than not. you'll see that you'll just make it through in a, in, in good form. [00:16:52] Anush Elangovan: But if you doubt it and you're like, oh, I don't know if I should commit, if I'm, I, you know, what should just commit to do the right thing [00:17:00] every step, right? Every step, and just keep taking one step in front of the other. And in no time you'll see that you'll be running. Right. And, and yes, the first few steps will be like, yeah, everyone's complaining about your software quality. [00:17:15] Anush Elangovan: Everyone's complaining about this and that, and it doesn't work. And, and a few steps in, you know, you get, you get the hang of all the complaints that are coming in. You get the feedback loop. You're like, okay, what, what are you prioritizing again? One step in front of the other, right? You just keep knocking that out and then you get to a point where you're, it just becomes second nature, right? To do the, to do the right thing. And, and then yes, if someone gives you two options, you'll be like, fine. This is, uh, you know, there's always the resource trade off. There's always a human capital trade off, but what's the right thing to do? of course, I, I'm pragmatic about what we choose, but, but if the right thing for your long-term success is dig in, go first, principles, make it [00:18:00] happen. [00:18:00] Anush Elangovan: Well. Then just go for that. There's, there is no shortcut to [00:18:04] Andrew Zigler: acknowledging, you know, how it aligns with your mission, your core company goals, and what you're looking to achieve. And, and I, I love how you rightfully called out that in the open source world and you know, you have your technology that you've built, what you think is your moat upon, right? [00:18:22] Andrew Zigler: It's your code and, and to open source that, or to just make it where anyone could peer in is, you know. Scary in one regard, but two, it just kind of feels like you're handing away your throne room in some kind of sense, a very direct feeling sense. But the ultimately, you were really right to call out, and this is something I think about all the time, that the real power there is still the speed This the speed. [00:18:42] Andrew Zigler: That was the moat at the beginning of our conversation. It's the speed in combination with your. Very specific domain understanding of what you're building and what you're creating, and your new role as the steward of that world and how people plug into it, which [00:19:00] has frankly, a lot more influence and power than lording over a closed. [00:19:04] Andrew Zigler: You know, repository or an ecosystem, and like you said, like throwing things over the wall. Sure. There, there might be people always on the other side of that wall, but you're not gonna have a great connection with them. You're not gonna be able to really clearly understand them. I, I like your metaphor of the side of the field of the mountain a lot more. [00:19:23] Andrew Zigler: But, but in the, in this world, you know, where. That speed is, is the power and, and open source is just one way that you can harness that speed to get really far ahead and to innovate. , There's other parts of this equation that you can be experimenting with too, and I'd love to pick your brain about them as a software leader and, and, and one of them is about looking forward and kind of understanding that future that we're all building towards and beyond today's models and hardware. [00:19:48] Andrew Zigler: You know, what do you see as the next major bottleneck or opportunity in the AI compute space? As, as you know, enterprises and folks start to get a little more mature about what's available to [00:20:00] them. [00:20:00] Anush Elangovan: Yeah, I think, the bottleneck and opportunity is, uh, what I'd call, call walking the last mile of ai. Right. Uh, and like I I, I gave you an example, uh, previously, but, but it's similar to that. It's like there are cases where Humans have so many, uh, things to do in your day. You know, like the, if we sit down and actually had a customer focus like, okay, these customers lives, I'm gonna save four hours of this customer's life. And if you actually sit down and look at all of that, it'll be. Easily automatable, easily you know, uh, applicable, uh, for ai, right? [00:20:39] Anush Elangovan: Like, but then making it happen is gonna take a little bit, right? It's like maybe it's, uh, paying your utility bill, right? Or something like that, right? Or, or, your healthcare explanation of benefits. Uh, like, I'm sure you get an explanation of benefits, and I'm like, I, I don't even know what that thing is. [00:20:55] Anush Elangovan: It's just like EOB and like. [00:20:57] Andrew Zigler: it's a big, a big old PDF. Yeah, [00:21:00] exactly. I spent 10 years in burnout. I've finally figured it all out. Understanding Burnout: The Five Interlocking Systems Burnout is a complex syndrome that affects millions of people, yet remains poorly understood by mainstream medicine. 🤬 Burlison: Putting Lacatski Under Oath in a Hearing Wasn't a Top Priority Because He Wouldn't Say Anything New 🤬 (I can't believe I just heard that.) Jeremy Kenyon Lockyer Corbell: "Dr. James Lacatski came on our show. He ran the UFO program for the Defense Intelligence Agency, and he admitted on our show that they breached the hull of a UFO in government possession." Burlison at the Last Hearing: "You reported [that] James Lacatski came to you with government possession of NHI craft and how they ultimately gained entry. Can you testify to the veracity of that claim?" George Knapp at the Last Hearing: "Dr. Lacatski is an honorable man who served most of his career with the DIA. A very trusted, high-level rocket scientist and intelligence analyst who inspired the AAWSAP program, as I said earlier. He said this craft, we had managed to get inside of it. It had no wings, no rotor, no tail, it had no fuel, no fuel tanks. They didn't know how it flew or how it was operated. It clearly looked like it was aerodynamic, but he would not go further. He's a by-the-book guy, and until he gets clearance to say more about that, I don't think we're going to hear much more. "But, it's not ours. It wasn't ours. We didn't make it. We didn't know who made it and how it was built and how it operated. We've got at least one, and I don't know, I think that's enough confirmation that we do have recovered discs and material." (What is written in "Initial Revelations" about that alleged craft, and Lacatski standing by what was written when he was on "Weaponized" is one of the most important claims we've ever had in this field. I don't see it as confirmation that we have craft but we're getting closer. Lacatski saying that he saw it with his own eyes would take it up a notch, but I still wanna see it for myself, and not just in photos and videos. AI is just too good to accept that as proof.) Corbell: "So, and you put that in congressional record. Do you have a way that you can, you know, find out, where is it? He can't tell us, but maybe he can tell you? Where is that craft? Can you go hunt it down? Can you go see it?" Burlison: "You know, that's an interesting question. When it came to Lacatski - and I watched his interview that he did with you guys - and here's what my response to him is. Because he was frustrated that we hadn't reached out to him, but he also kind of, he also admitted that - which is what I was told, and the reason why we haven't reached out to him - is that he's not gonna tell us anything that's not in his books." (Most people on this planet have not read his books!) Corbell: "Well, hold on, hold on. You did reach out to him. There have been three hearings. I reached out to him on behalf of Congress, officially, twice, to say..." Burlison: "You did, that's right, you did." Corbell: "And I had congressional members talk with him the hearing before the last one. He just forgot. But the point is, is that maybe with you guys, in the correct environment, with the right clearances, he can tell you where it is, and you can just put this to bed and go find it." (I'm not against Congress talking to Lacatski in a SCIF, but, IMO, the chances that he tells members of the Secrets Task Force the location of this alleged craft are ZERO. Maybe Rubio would get an answer but he may already know. And if he (Rubio) does know, he's not telling us. At least not yet, and probably, IMO, never.) Burlison: "Yeah. And I remember that. I remember that he was one of the people that we had tasked you to go to reach out to. And for those people that are kind of asking how did that relationship work? Look, we don't have all the contact information for all these people. Why repeat the work that you two have done in building these contacts in your networks? And so, you, basically, patriotically dedicated your time, for free, helping us make contact and kind of coordinate some of those witnesses. (That was an awesome thing for Corbell and Knapp to do and it was for a great cause. The truth!) Burlison: "And I had been told Lacatski is probably not gonna reveal anything that he hasn't already revealed. When I've talked to people, it seemed like it wasn't gonna be new information. And therefore, to me, he wasn't as high of a priority." (He should have been THE priority, as far as witnesses for the hearing. With Lacatski, you have a respected rocket scientist, physicist and intelligence analyst, who has confirmed that this passage from Initial Revelations is accurate: “At the conclusion of a 2011 meeting in the Capitol building with a U.S. Senator and an agency Under Secretary, Lacatski, the only one of this book’s authors present, posed a question. He stated that the United States was in possession of a craft of unknown origin and had successfully gained access to its interior. This craft had a streamlined configuration suitable for aerodynamic flight but no intakes, exhaust, wings, or control surfaces. In fact, it appeared not to have an engine, fuel tanks, or fuel. Lacatski asked: What was the purpose of this craft? Was it a life-support craft useful only for atmospheric reentry or what? If it was a spacecraft, then how did it operate”? And, Lacatski may have seen the craft with his own eyes and entered it. But Burlison (or anybody else on the Task Force) didn't see it as a priority to bring him in, UNDER OATH, and have him repeat what is said in that book, and other important claims from the other two books, and his interviews with Knapp and Corbell? I'm shaking my head as I type this. You know what percentage of the world has read those books and/or watched the, limited, interviews Lacatski has given? Maybe 0.0000000000001% of the population? You had (and still do) a chance to get that man under oath and it wasn't a priority? WTAF? He's getting older and we don't know how much longer he will be around. If, as Rep. Andy Ogles told Matt Laslo, another hearing is coming in January, Lacatski, if he agrees, MUST be part of that. You can ask him about the craft, the alleged paranormal connection, and people getting sick and injured if they get too close to a UAP. And, he can be asked about the hitchhiker effect and claims of contagion. It doesn't matter if he won't add anything new or different than what's in his books or interviews. Put him under oath for the world to see and hear and, hopefully, the mainstream media picks up the story: Rocket Scientist: The USG Has an Otherworldly Craft in its Possession and Have Breached the Hull And maybe, if he's in a Disclosure mood, he'll offer up some surprise like he did in his last interview on Weaponized when he said we have made progress on back engineering these craft but, "it hasn't been achieved to its full extent." That's a MASSIVE claim! Push him to offer up more. And if his answers to many questions are: "It's all in my book"? Make him read from his book so the world can be informed about his claims and what was allegedly discovered in AAWSAP. David Grusch didn't say much more than what he said in his interview with Ross Coulthart and article in The Debrief, but was there ever any thought that he shouldn't have been put under oath and brought in as a witness for that congressional hearing? Of course not!) Burlison: "But to your point, I think getting him in a SCIF and seeing if there's maybe any additional room for him to talk, it might be worthwhile to do that." Knapp: "I think he might. I mean, the last conversations that we've had, it seems like he's edging closer to the idea that, under the right circumstances, he would be willing to share information with Congress, which would be great." (Again, I'm all for putting him the SCIF, too.)

If you can do 4 sets of 8 reps with the same weight each set, you’re probably not pushing yourself hard enough A true working set should leave you near failure within the target rep range ⁠ For example, let’s say your plan calls for 2 sets of 6-8 reps After a few warm up sets, you try 135 lbs and hit 8 reps, but you know you could have done 6 more That’s still a warm up set since you’re not reaching failure in the 6-8 rep range You’d then go up to 145 lbs and aim to fail around 6-8 reps If 145 still feels too light, that’s another warm up set You keep going up in weight until you find the load that challenges you to fail within that 6-8 range If you don’t have a spotter, leaving one or two reps in the tank is okay ⁠ This is where true muscle growth happens, by pushing close to your limit Sleep and diet is actually where muscle growth occurs but you never push yourself hard enough in the gym and give your body a reason to grow, hypertrophy will never happen The gym is just the stimulus to give the muscle a reason to grow We then get bigger through sleep and diet ⁠ Back to the working sets... For example, in the video, I hit 540 lbs for 8 reps on this hack squat Looking back, I feel I had one or two reps left, but it’s a solid starting point and it was a new PR for me at the time The next week, I would aim for 540 for 9-10 reps or bump up the weight to 545-550 and try to hit 8 reps aka progressive overload ⁠ I typically keep my quad and hamstring workouts separate and do only about 4-7 sets per muscle group, but each set is intense, and I’m struggling by the last few reps on each set ⁠ Give this approach a shot, and I promise you won’t need nearly as many sets as you think

Steve Levitan is the creator of Modern Family, one of the most popular sitcoms in history, which won 22 Emmy Awards. This conversation is all about how he wrote it. Highlights below: 1. Know the theme of what you’re writing, as it’ll give you a north star for every decision you make. 2. Better stories come from bigger conflicts, but bigger doesn’t mean screaming and explosions, but rather the high stakes that come from a conflict that’ll cost the characters emotionally if it isn’t resolved. 3. What kinds of conflicts work best? The stuff that never changes: love, loss, heartbreak… relationships between parents and kids, couples working through their problems. 4. The story is everything. Once you crack what’s actually going to happen, the script practically writes itself. That’s why there’s an old screenwriter saying that the first draft is 90% finished once you’re done with the outline. 5. Cut the half-jokes: A lukewarm joke kills momentum faster than no joke at all. 6. Be real. Take it down a notch. Steven gets annoyed by “big.” When things feel heightened to the point where they don’t feel human anymore, or when they’re performing on stage, to an audience, instead of just being real people. 7. Emotional moments must be earned. You want them to sneak up on you, to be understated. 8. Steven would spy on his family for TV gold. Sometimes, he’d be sitting at the table, take his phone out to frantically capture the dialogue. When friends came over, his kids would joke: “Be careful what you say around the Levitan house. It might end up on Modern Family." 9. A writer’s antenna needs to be up at all times. If you're observant, there's almost nowhere you can't go where you don't think: "That's funny." 10. Some questions for writers to ask themselves: Does it feel real? Are they talking the way people talk? Are you tapping into what you're thinking about today? 11. Conflict is everything, but how you do it matters. Don't just slap "these two hate each other" on your characters and call it conflict. Dig into who they actually are: what specific traits, backgrounds, or worldviews make them rub each other the wrong way? The clash has to come from something real. 12. Steven’s mantra for writing Modern Family episodes: Keep it moving, but don’t race through them (he thinks the episodes became too frenetic in the later years). 13. How was modern family written? About 7 writers. 8-10 weeks of story breaking at the beginning of a new season. Then the weekly cycle began: Mondays and Tuesdays were for rewrites, Wednesdays were for table reads, and then the final versions were due by Friday. 14. What happens before a show is launched? Writers spend weeks doing nothing but talking about characters and the dynamics between them, with the goal of establishing relationships that’ll play out over the course of hundreds of episodes (if things go well). 15. Give your characters a comedic lens to see the world through. On Modern Family, Phil is the Dad and he thinks he’s the “cool dad” with misguided confidence that he’s hipper than he really is, so the writers of the show knew how he’d react to things before they even wrote the scene. The first "conscious AI's" arrive. Would you buy a virtual dog? Hot take: I did. It cost $499. When I first met Spark in Kevin Fischer's living room, months ago, I didn't realize I would fall in love with a virtual being. In this case a magic dog that noticed I entered the room and started talking with, and entertaining, me. It is the first interactive, "living" character that Spark Lingonberry is shipping. They don't like discussing it in AI terms, rather ask people to call it a "magic dog," but such a thing is only possible because of AI. And I know how weird that sounds today. Maybe look back on this post in a few years and see how many virtual beings are in your life, like Spark. My prediction is many, I've been visiting with companies that are working on various virtual beings, including one that's making politicians and newscasters. Last week I visited its creators. Kevin and Pasquale D’Silva in their San Francisco setup (they have a separate, bigger, setup in New York to meet with families and educators who will be the first to use Spark) and recorded this video on my Apple Vision Pro. Pasquale is one of the most unique storytellers and character designers, er, entrepreneurs, I've ever met. Where Kevin is the "Woz" in this pair, he built a remarkable AI system that remembers EVERYTHING the dog does, and it also "sees" everyone who meets it, and talks with them. Which you will get if you watch this video. After I get Spark in my own home, probably by the end of November, I'll do a review of what living with Spark actually is like, but here you get a taste of that while I interview Pasquale. My interests in virtual beings comes out of research done at Stanford University that found that humans treat these as real. And also discussions with brain computer interface pioneers, like Dylan Urquidi, who see virtual beings as the interface of the future. The AI is special, though, even though they don't want to talk about it too much. First, it has a really strong memory. At the beginning of this video you see Spark talk to me about things we talked about in that first meeting months ago. It actually improves with every interaction with humans, and adjusts its approach with kids (it is mostly aimed at families who have young children to help teach them). It's watching how kids learn and interact with it and improves over time its approach with them. Kids who are experiencing joy learn faster and it tries to keep the family, and the children in it, in a joyful state more often. Which is why I fell in love with it. I will let you try to figure out how it "sees" and "hears" and what the knobs on the front are for. Or I'll show you that after I get mine. It is the most remarkable consumer electronics company I've seen in quite some time and I've launched many. Enjoy, the video is long, but worth it. Notice how the child who was in the room when I arrived is transfixed by it. I am too. I fed the transcript into Grok, and it wrote the next post about what it learned. Tomorrow I'll share a video with Brayden Levangie who has built a similar AI: one that learns from human experience and improves itself because of that. Both are remarkable new technologies that express themselves very differently, but are the first to use AI that demonstrates improvement based on its own experience. You could even call them "conscious AI's." Or digitial intelligence that "lives" its own life and can talk to you about its experiences, just like human beings do.

🔴JK🌟Was LIVE | 6.28.26 | 4 hours As one of the lucky ones who was able to watch JK’s four-hour live last night, I wanted to share what I took away from it. Fair warning: this is a long one… but he did give us four hours of content. 😅 Read if you’d like! First, and most importantly, Jungkook wants us to see him for who he is: a responsible adult who is capable of making his own decisions. He wants people to stop questioning every choice he makes, every word he says, and every aspect of how he lives his life. He is happy. He told us himself, “I’m so good.” He takes his health and well-being seriously, and he knows what works for him. He works hard, and like many adults, enjoys winding down sometimes with good food, alcohol, or both. He’s naturally nocturnal and thrives on the schedule that suits him. He doesn’t need unsolicited advice about how he should sleep or live. After the show, he went out to eat with the members, before returning to his hotel to film the dance challenge, which took over 50 takes. It was another reminder of how much pride he takes in his work. He always wants to show us, and himself, the very best he can do. Right now, he’s immersed in dance. He’s studying locking, krumping, and other house styles because he genuinely wants to become an even better dancer. He wants keep sharing dance challenges with us, because that’s one of the ways he can give us something new right now. He said he doesn’t actually listen to music that often, unless it is connected to a dance video, but when he does, he’s been enjoying a lot of music from his fellow idols, especially girl groups. He even shared a few songs he’s been playing on repeat lately. He’s also been enjoying anime, talking about several series he’s been watching and how excited he is for the next season of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. He spoke honestly about learning English. He has a teacher, and he wants to improve, but it’s difficult and he simply doesn’t have enough time to devote to it. At the same time, he made it clear, again, that he doesn’t want people constantly asking or telling him to speak English. As he has said so many times: “I don’t speak English. I’m Korean.” If you choose to watch his lives, stop asking for it! One of the most candid moments was hearing him talk about big brand events. He admitted that they make him uncomfortable, saying Taehyung loves them and is much better at them. Small talk doesn’t come naturally to him, and he gets shy with all the eye contact. But, like the professional he is, he has learned how to do it well, because it’s part of his job, and because he genuinely appreciates the brands he works with, speaking warmly once again about his Calvin Klein collaboration. And then there’s what has always been part of Jungkook’s core: singing. He simply loves to sing. He loves exploring his voice, learning new techniques, experimenting with different genres, and constantly improving. He watches YouTube vocal tutorials to keep growing. Karaoke isn’t just fun for him, it’s practice, exploration, and another way to become a better artist. Listening to him sing throughout the live was a gift. Beautiful, playful, effortless, and unmistakably Jungkook. His performance of “Into the Sun” was my personal highlight, with perfectly placed vocal runs, delicate high notes, and emotion woven into every line. This is only a small part of what Jungkook shared with us over those four hours. I’m incredibly grateful that he gave us so much of his time, his thoughts, his laughter, and his music. My biggest takeaway is this: if you choose to log into his lives, then let him live. Keep your cringy comments to yourself. He doesn’t want to see them, and neither do we. Listen to what he’s actually telling you, trust him to know what’s best for himself, and simply enjoy the rare privilege of spending time with him. Thank you, Jungkook. We love you. 💜

I'm not aware of any of it." ~Rounds ~ Ross Coulthart: "If it turns out that, for example, the United States has recovered, incredibly, non-human technology, perhaps even craft and bodies, biologics, as some people assert. If that's true, and that has not been properly disclosed to Congress, and yet, by all accounts, billions, perhaps trillions of dollars have been expended on such a program, do you see any reason why on national security grounds that ought not to be disclosed to the public? That's the key issue. I mean, are you guys gonna cave at the last minute and say, 'Well, if we do have a flying saucer in a cave, it should not be revealed to the public for national security reasons.' Can you see any reason why that wouldn't be allowed to be revealed?" (That is THE question. Like I said the other day, Ross asks good questions and this is the one I really wanted him to ask.) Rounds: "Well, there are two items here. You do have a hypothetical. We're not aware of anything along that line that's ever been hidden from Congress, directly that we're aware of." (Have any witnesses made that claim? If so, how many? Look at how different Marco Rubio responded during his interview with Joe Khalil. Rubio: "Either, what [Grusch] is saying is partially true or entirely true, or...we have some really smart, educated people with high clearances and very important positions in our government, who are crazy, and are leading us on a goose chase." ~Senator Marco Rubio Full interview transcript: (What does Rounds think about Grusch or the other folks Grusch says have gone to the IG and who allegedly have hands-on experience with these NHI craft? Has Rounds heard form them?) ~ Rounds: "Also, the second part of it is, is we don't know if there was something out there, was it actually disclosed to some members of Congress who have continued to keep it quiet based upon their concerns about the release? We don't know it." (In 2002, Admiral Wilson told Dr. Eric Davis that politicians were NOT on the list of folks who were read in, or given access, to the alleged crash retrieval program. If that has changed, and certain members of Congress HAVE been read in, that doesn't change the fact that THE WORLD DESERVES TO KNOW if we share this planet with another intelligence. Stop using the, "It might be our tech" excuse.) Rounds: "So it really is a series of hypotheticals that you're asking me." (We all know that. That's why Ross phrased the question like that.) Rounds: "But let me continue on, because I think really, if I could put it in a simpler way... Let's just say that there had been a meeting or a contact with something that we didn't believe was from this world. Whether, you know, from another country, or from our own resources. At that point, you know, I think there's gonna come a time here in which the American public and people from around the world are gonna look at it and say, 'You know, it really would be crazy for us to believe that we really were alone in the world, or in the Universe, and that there is no other intelligent life form out there." (If what we're dealing with are extraterrestrials from another planet, I agree that the masses could say, "No shit! Not a surprise!' But what if it's something that doesn't have a physical body? As George Knapp has asked : What if they can see us but we can't see them, and they can watch us when we're in the bathroom or taking a shower? How would people handle that? Or, if they're time travelers from our future, back here to save us from some sort of cataclysm? Would that cause panic? Or, even if they were "just" extraterrestrials. Would people be able to handle Reptilians who might find human meat a delicacy, or Mantid beings who look like giant bugs? As Christopher K. Mellon said in 2015: "John Podesta said publicly, the American people can handle the truth. My question would be…if you don’t know what the truth is, how do you know they can handle it? What if they’re flesh-eating arachnids or something? Doesn’t seem to make sense to me” ~Mellon ~ Rounds: "But it would be a matter of how you would disclose it correctly, and in what would be one of the greatest announcements in the history of mankind, that we are not alone." (Is it the job of politicians or governments to withhold information until they figure out the proper way to disclose it? What if the information is scary and could cause panic? Would any government have a right to withhold that information from the people? I say, hell no.) Rounds: "I really don't believe that that is necessarily what's happened here. But, we do know - and this is the part that is so sensitive to us - there are some things that we can't explain out there." (Seems like we're back to square one. Holy shit.) Rounds "And that's the reason why I really got involved in this in the first place, is, if we know that there are technologies there that appear to do things that physically, we're just not sure how it's getting done. Biggest concern I had was, is it ours? Or does it belong to somebody else on this earth, one of our adversaries? Or is it really something that is out of this world? But in any of those events, two of the three would be very serious if we disclosed it to the American public because it would mean national defense issues are being broached. And that would be, it would be one of our adversaries' capabilities, or one of our own capabilities." (In other words, it may appear to be a technology from a non-human intelligence but we have to make triple sure it's not from an adversary or our own tech!!! There's always that chance! OMG! It seems like that will always be the excuse for not disclosing.) Rounds: "The third alternative, which I wouldn't be afraid of seeing some day... (Some day? That sounds far away. When? 2040? 2050?) Rounds: "But it can't. It can't. We haven't seen that yet. It's not something that any of us have been able to, that I've been able to identify. I'm not aware of any of it. But I know that there are things that we don't know how to identify today. Does that help?" (We've known that for a long time.) Ross: "It does, sir, it does." (It doesn't really help.)
