Christopher Nolan just admitted the one genre that terrifies him. After shooting The Odyssey across six countries on pure IMAX film, Jimmy asked if he’d ever want to do something “easy” next. “How about a Christopher Nolan rom-com?” Nolan didn’t even hesitate: “I think doing a rom-com would be...

Christopher Nolan Explains Why He Doesn’t Use CGI and Shoots on IMAX Robert Downey Jr.: Why Christopher Nolan doesn’t use CGI. Christopher Nolan: I find CGI, however versatile it is, but it always tends to feel a little safe to me. Christopher Nolan: I think if you want something to have a bit of bite, you’ve got the imagery to a better threat, even if it’s a miniature, even if it’s something very fake, but something real on camera. Christopher Nolan: I think it gives you a better result. Robert Downey Jr.: Why does Christopher Nolan shoot on film? Christopher Nolan: I shoot on film because it’s the highest quality imaging format ever devised, particularly IMAX film, large-format film. Christopher Nolan: Film shows you the world kind of the way your eye sees it. Robert Downey Jr.: Where does Christopher Nolan get his ideas? Christopher Nolan: All over the place. Different on every film. Christopher Nolan: Oppenheimer, I’d been interested in a long time, didn’t know that much about the specifics of his story, then came to the book American Prometheus, and that absolutely got me hooked. Christopher Nolan: So, in the case of Oppenheimer, the idea… I trace it right back to, like, as a kid in the eighties, and we all thought we were gonna die in nuclear Armageddon. Robert Downey Jr.: Absolutely. Me too.

Christopher Nolan says The Odyssey is a promise he made to himself at 16, watching a volcano documentary in a dome-screen IMAX in Chicago. Christopher Nolan: "Going to the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago when I was 16 years old, seeing a documentary about volcanoes in the OmniMax format, and thinking... why on earth isn't Hollywood using this format? I always wanted to be a director. If I ever got the chance, could I shoot a film in this way?" Christopher Nolan: "I called my friends at IMAX and said, look... if ever we're going to make a film entirely on IMAX, this is The Odyssey. This is the one. Can you find a way to alleviate the limiting factor? The cameras are extremely loud." Christopher Nolan: "What they did is they came up with a way of blimping the camera... a high-tech box that silences it. The thing weighed about 300 pounds. But it let us, for the first time ever, get the quiet scenes, the dramatic scenes, and therefore do the whole film."

Christopher Nolan’s next film releases in just 159 days. Think about that. Think about how far we’ve traveled since Oppenheimer released & now how close we are to The Odyssey. It gives me a boost of energy. I can’t wait for this summer - we get Christopher Nolan back in IMAX.

Christopher Nolan reveals the first time an actor said no to him was David Bowie, and he had to personally beg him to change his mind. Jimmy Fallon: Have you ever gotten a “no”? Christopher Nolan: Have I ever gotten a “no”? Yeah, I have. Jimmy Fallon: Besides me when I said I didn’t want to do Batman. Christopher Nolan: The only “no” I’ll admit to is David Bowie for The Prestige. He was my great idol, and I thought he’d be perfect to play Nikola Tesla. Christopher Nolan: We sent him the script and everything, and he said no. It was the first time I ever went back and said, “Can I just go and meet him? Can I try and convince him in the room?” Christopher Nolan: They agreed, so I quickly wrote him a better speech for his first appearance, showed up with a new script, and basically begged. I managed to turn that “no” into a “yes.” Jimmy Fallon: Yes! But you did get a “no” from the coolest kid in school.

Ryan Reynolds praises Christopher Nolan after “The Odyssey” beats “Deadpool & Wolverine” to become the biggest R-rated movie ever: “Obviously, [‘The Odyssey’] is an incredible, incredible movie. Christopher Nolan literally breathes the rarest air on Earth. He’s a singular filmmaker,” Reynolds said at the “Mayday" premiere Tuesday night. “I mean, Matt Damon, Tom Holland, who’s clearly batting a thousand stars with Zendaya. I just love that people are going to the movie theaters. I don’t even care why or for what reason. Just go to the movie theaters. There’s no better shared experience.”

Anne Hathaway says being on a Nolan set means you're one of the three best in the world at your job "I remember when I was on Dark Knight Rises, one of the crew members said, I've really got impostor syndrome being here. I said, oh really?" "She said, yeah, but then someone told me, if you're on a Christopher Nolan set, that means you might be one of the three best people at your job in the world" "And I thought about that and I was like, it's kind of true actually"

Christopher Nolan’s next film is only 63 days away but the doubters are out in full force- you can hear them from miles away. I’d like to offer an olive branch to those questioning Nolan in this moment: there’s still time for you to reverse course & stop doubting Nolan. I’m truly surprised by how many have suggested that The Odyssey could be a full-blown failure. The “bust potential” conversations around this film are growing, albeit needlessly. Many have criticized Nolan’s casting decisions & creative decisions- without even seeing the film. This is all without mentioning that Nolan just won multiple Oscars- he just gave us an immediate classic with Oppenheimer. Doesn’t that mean he gets the benefit of the doubt? Shouldn’t people hold their reservations until they see Nolan’s vision through? It doesn’t make any sense to me. Let this be a line of demarcation. 63 days out from The Odyssey, if you’re one of those folks doubting/questioning Nolan, this might be one of your last chance to be on the right side of history when Nolan drops another classic.

If I could go back and do it all again I think underwater welding would be one of the trades I’d want to learn. I have a lot of respect for people who do this.

Christopher Nolan confirms The Odyssey was completed ahead of schedule and under budget. Christopher Nolan: So, you’re asking a lot of the studio, you’re asking a lot of the cast and everybody. Um, you know, I like to say it was a very hard movie, but hard for all the right reasons. You know, it’s The Odyssey, it should be hard. Um… Jon Stewart: It shows up on screen. I mean, all of it shows up on screen. Christopher Nolan: Thank you. Jon Stewart: And someone was telling me that you actually completed it ahead of schedule, as you have with all of your movies, and under budget. Christopher Nolan: Yes. Jon Stewart: Never happens! [Audience laughter and applause.] Never happens! I mean, it’s just… wow. Christopher Nolan: Well, I mean, the reality is, you know, we went in at a hundred days. Um, and by day ninety-one, we couldn’t have taken another step. So, we finished… we finished at the right time. Jon Stewart: You were done. Christopher Nolan: We were done. Everybody was done. I mean, people were just exhausted.

The connection between Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" (2014) & Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" (2014): Christopher Nolan’s father died in 2009, after a year-long battle with cancer that was diagnosed just as he was finishing 'Inception' (2010), and as Jonathan Nolan was starting to write 'Interstellar' (2014). His father’s diagnosis was very much in his mind, Jonathan Nolan said, “the connection that you have with your parents. It was the background to much of it.” Christopher Nolan himself sees 'Interstellar' more in terms of his relationship with his own children – Rory, Magnus, Oliver and Flora – all of whom have given him the working titles for the last four of his movies. The Dark Knight was “Rory’s First Kiss”, Inception was “Oliver’s Arrow”, The Dark Knight Rises was “Magnus Rex”, and Interstellar was “Flora’s Letter”. The need to be away from them while filming eats at him. “There is a lot of guilt for that. A lot of guilt. The very sadness of saying goodbye to people is a massive expression of the love you feel for them. For me, 'Interstellar' is really about being a father. The sense of your life passing you by and your kids growing up before your eyes. Very much what I felt watching Richard Linklater’s 'Boyhood' (2014), an extraordinary film, which is weirdly doing the same thing in a completely different way. We are all engaged in the biggest mystery of all, which is just living through time.” ("Christopher Nolan: the man who rebooted the blockbuster", Tom Shone, The Guardian, 2014) P.S: 1) Happy 66th birthday Richard Linklater! 2) Happy 56th birthday, Christopher Nolan!

Christopher Nolan says filming The Odyssey in IMAX meant stopping every 3 minutes to reload the cameras John: “How long... what's the cartridge on an IMAX?” Nolan: “A little under three minutes. Every three minutes, you're saying to the actors, ‘Just stay in that mode.’ Incredibly dramatic scene. Take a break” John: “And you came in nine days faster and under budget with that” Nolan: “Well, I think, actually, sometimes the limitations give everybody a real focus. And so I went to the actors early on, and I said, ‘In the middle of your most intense scene, is it OK if we just stop the camera, reload it, keep everybody quiet…’” John: “You're a wizard, Harry”
