Gemini for Android is here! This new app makes it easier to access Google's chatbot, powered by the Gemini Pro LLM, right from your Android device. You can ask Gemini a question by tapping the launcher icon or long-pressing the power button. Once invoked, the Gemini overlay lets you enter a text or text+image prompt. You can tap the camera icon to snap a photo or press the "add this screen" button to take a screenshot of the current page to include in your prompt. The Gemini app for Android is available on Google Play with support for English, but support for Korean and Japanese will be coming next week. While there won't be an app for iOS, iPhone users can access Gemini by opening the Google App and tapping the "Gemini" button up top. How can you long-press the power button to invoke Gemini if that gesture is handled by Google Assistant? The answer is that the Gemini Android app can replace Google Assistant as your default assistant if you want, meaning all the ways you'd normally invoke Google Assistant on your phone can instead invoke Gemini. Unfortunately, Gemini currently doesn't offer ALL the same functionality as Google Assistant and requires an active data connection, but more features will be added over time. There's also now a Gemini Advanced tier, which offers access to Google's most powerful Ultra 1.0 LLM. Access to Gemini Advanced requires a subscription to the new $20/month "AI Premium" Google One plan, which offers the same benefits as the 2TB plan but adds access to Gemini Advanced and soon Gemini features in Gmail, Docs, & other Workspace apps (formerly under the Duet AI umbrella). Instead of just autofilling your credit card, Chrome will now complete entire tasks for you: filling out PDFs, renewing your driver's license, researching trips, booking reservations. You give it a task, it browses the web autonomously, and asks for your approval at the final step. Available for Google AI Pro ($19.99/month) or AI Ultra ($249.99/month). All Chrome users get a new Gemini AI sidebar that pulls from your Gmail and past conversations. My Take Last week Google announced AI Mode connecting to your Gmail and Photos. Now Chrome is pulling from your emails, conversations, and browsing activity to act on your behalf. Every new AI feature requires deeper access to your personal data. You're not just paying $20 or $250 a month for convenience. You're handing over your credit cards, government documents, addresses, and browsing habits to an AI that will interact with websites as you. The people excited about this haven't thought through what happens when it goes wrong. An AI filling out government forms. An AI with your credit card making purchases. An AI that hallucinates or gets social engineered. And when adoption isn't fast enough, they'll degrade regular search and browsing until this feels like the only viable option. That's the playbook. Google is making $62 billion a quarter destroying the websites it NEEDS to survive. This is literally a death spiral that ends with Google killing itself. Let me explain what's going on... Google added AI summaries to the top of every search result in 2024. When you Google something now, the answer sits right there on Google's page. You never have to click anywhere. Google took the information from someone else's website, summarized it, and kept you inside Google's ecosystem. The result: 60% of all Google searches now end without a single click to any website. Small publishers lost 60% of their traffic in one year. Medium publishers lost 47%. Even the biggest names in media, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Business Insider, all saw traffic fall between 22% and 55%. The Axios CEO called it "a referral extinction event for the ad-supported web." Google's response to all of this was to tell publishers they can "opt out" of having their content summarized. But opting out also REMOVES your description from normal search results. So the choice Google gives you is let us steal your content for free, or become invisible on the internet. That's extortion. The Washington Post laid off another round of journalists this year because of it. Stereogum, one of the most respected music publications on the internet, had to BEG readers for donations. Business Insider cut 21% of its staff. Dozens of smaller publishers have shut down entirely. The people who actually CREATE the information Google summarizes are going bankrupt while Google posts record revenue. But here's where this gets interesting and where everyone stops thinking: Google's AI summaries are only as good as the content they summarize. If the publishers who write the original articles, run the original investigations, and create the original data go out of business, there is nothing left for Google to summarize. The AI starts recycling old information, the answers get stale, the quality drops, and users start noticing that Google's summaries are increasingly wrong, outdated, or useless. Google is essentially strip-mining the internet for short-term revenue. They are extracting all the value from content creators without paying for it, driving those creators out of business, and then wondering why the quality of their own product is declining. This is exactly what Napster did to the music industry in the early 2000s: Made content free, creators went broke, and quality collapsed. It took a decade to rebuild. Google is doing the same thing to the entire internet at 100x the scale. Rolling Stone, Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, and Billboard are now suing Google for antitrust violations. Chegg, the education platform, lost 49% of its traffic and is suing too. The UK's competition authority just ordered Google to let publishers opt out without being punished. The DOJ already ruled Google is an illegal monopoly. And Google's defense in court is genuinely unbelievable. They argue that publishers CHOOSE to let Google index their content and can leave anytime they want. That's like saying you choose to pay protection money to the mob because technically you could close your business and move to another city. Google controls 90% of search. Leaving Google means leaving the internet. Meanwhile Google is investing billions in custom AI chips to make these summaries cheaper at scale. Every quarter the problem gets worse. The internet as we've known it for 25 years ran on a simple deal: Publishers make content. Google sends traffic. Advertisers pay for the traffic. Everyone wins. But Google just BROKE that deal and kept all the money.

The new Google Search is rolling out. Information Agents are now appearing inside AI Mode. These agents operate in the background 24/7, continuously monitoring the web for information matching the customer’s exact requirements. When something relevant changes, Google can send them a detailed update with links to the web. For businesses, this changes things a lot. Let’s go through it together. It’s free: Google originally announced Information Agents at Google I/O in May. They are now available across all AI Mode languages and markets for Google AI Ultra subscribers. Google says access will expand to more people this summer. The process is fairly simple in that a user tells AI Mode what they want to monitor. For example: “Keep me updated when a new apartment matching these requirements becomes available.” “Alert me when one of my favorite athletes announces a sneaker collaboration.” Another possible use case could be: “Tell me when this product comes back in stock.” Google’s agent then works in the background and sends an update when it finds something relevant. Google says Information Agents can monitor: Blogs News websites Social posts Other web content Real-time shopping information Finance data Sports information The agent searches for changes related to the user’s specific question. This creates a new type of search visibility. A customer no longer needs to return to Google and repeat the same query every week. They can describe what they need once and let Google monitor the web for them. For businesses, that creates opportunities to appear after the original search has ended. Imagine someone tells Google: “Keep me updated on payroll software that adds better support for construction companies with employees and contractors.” Several weeks later, your company publishes: A new contractor-payment feature A construction-specific product page Updated pricing A QuickBooks integration A customer case study A comparison with another payroll platform Google’s agent may encounter that information while monitoring the topic. Your company can reach the customer at the moment your product becomes more relevant to them. This is my interpretation of what the rollout means for businesses. Google has not disclosed exactly how Information Agents select which pages or companies to include. But we do know the updates can contain links to the web. That creates a potential traffic opportunity for businesses publishing information that closely matches what customers are monitoring. A vague announcement such as: “We are excited to introduce several powerful improvements.” gives Google less specific information to match against the customer’s request. A clearer announcement might say: “Our payroll platform now supports automated contractor payments in all 50 states. The feature is available today on plans beginning at $149 per month and integrates with QuickBooks Online.” That gives the agent specific facts it can match to the customer’s request. A page published two years ago may still rank well. But if it has not been updated, it may not tell Google about: A newly launched feature A recent price change A product coming back in stock A new service area An updated integration A current customer result A newly published report Businesses need a system for keeping important information current and publishing meaningful updates when something changes. This does not mean publishing a constant stream of thin announcements. The update still needs to contain something genuinely useful. Clear and consistent information gives the agent stronger evidence to work with. If I had to reduce this rollout to one core idea, it would be this: Search is becoming continuous. The customer describes what they need. Google monitors the web in the background. A relevant change can trigger an update. That update can include links to supporting websites. For businesses, visibility increasingly depends on being discoverable at the moment something changes. That requires: Current product information Clear positioning Specific feature and pricing details Useful industry content Meaningful updates Consistent third-party validation Pages worth sending the customer to The businesses that benefit most will make it easy for Google to understand what changed, who it matters to and why the customer should care. Most developers can't explain how Single Sign-On (SSO) works. ​ This was one of my favorite questions during technical interviews. I love to ask about it because it's not a trivial topic. ​ Here is a 5-minute overview of how Single Sign-On works. ​ We all hate passwords; the less we use them, the better, and SSO helps with that. ​ When you log in to Google once and visit YouTube, Gmail, Drive, and any other connected service without re-entering your password, three players are working behind the scenes: ​ • A user trying to access an application. You, in this case. • The application you want to access. For example, YouTube. • An Identity Provider (IDP) that will verify your identity. Google, in this case. ​ Here is what happens when you try to access one application for the first time: ​ 1. You try to log in to YouTube, and the application redirects you to the Identity Provider (IDP) for authentication. ​ 2. The IDP (Google) checks your credentials and confirms your identity. It creates a new session for you on its server and sets a session cookie in your browser. ​ 3. The IDP also creates a token for YouTube—a small piece of data that contains information about your identity. ​ 4. Your browser grabs the token and presents it to YouTube. ​ 5. YouTube checks the token, and if it is valid, lets you in. ​ But then you want to access Google Drive: ​ 1. You go to Google Drive, and the application redirects you to the IDP. ​ 2. The IDP recognizes that you are still logged in because you have the session cookie. It doesn't need to ask for your credentials. ​ 3. Instead, the IDP generates a new token for Drive. ​ 4. Your browser grabs the token and presents it to Google Drive. If the token is valid, Drive lets you in. ​ You can now access multiple applications without re-entering your password. This is probably one of the best things we've invented since sliced bread! ​ But, of course, implementing Single Sign-On is a nightmare! If you are a developer, don't try to reinvent the wheel.
