Chuck Yeager's Air Combat for MS-DOS PC (EA/1991) is a classic combat flight simulation game featuring the technical expertise and digitized voice of famous test pilot Chuck Yeager. It covers World War II, Korea, and Vietnam scenarios, with many of the respective airplanes. Was also available for Macintosh.

MicroProse was one of the leaders of the simulation genre, yet one of the best air combat sims of the 90s was created by a studio mostly known for adventure games: Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe (Lucasfilm Games, 1991). What started with Battlehawks 1942 (1998) and Their Finest Hour (1989), found its conclusion in the last game of the World War II trilogy. The massive manual includes an in depth background of the Western European Air War between the years 1943 and 1945, technical specs for various planes, and air combat tactics. Definitely not a game for the casual gamer but a feast for fans of air combat sims with a strong historical background. Lucasfilm was renamed LucasArts and later went into space combat sims (X-Wing, Tie Fighter) but sadly never published another historical simulation. A missed opportinity given the huge success of Their Finest Hour and Secrets Weapons of the Luftwaffe.

Obviously, flight and air combat sims from the 80s and even into the 90s weren't nearly as visually detailed and stunning as modern ones. But when Falcon was released it was the best air combat sim at its time. It was developed by Sphere and published by Spectrum HoloByte for Macintosh and MS-DOS, with later ports to Atari ST, Amiga, and other platforms. You take control of the F-16 Falcon jet fighter in realistic (at the time!) missions involving air-to-air combat against MiGs and ground attacks. The game features an incredibly detailed cockpit view with instrumentation, multiple HUD modes, radar systems, and authentic flight physics. It had variable difficulty levels and even a black-box recorder for reviewing flights. However, Falcon's biggest strength was walking the fine line between hardcore simulation depth with high playability even for the more casual gamers. I never considered myself a flight sim expert but could still get the F-16 off the ground :) I know, the polygon graphics look dated now but there was a time when this was state of the art. Top Gun (the movie) hit the cinemas in 1986, Falcon was released shortly after... excellent timing.

It's better known for the US box art featuring a banjo-playing old man, which was an intentionally absurd marketing tactic used to catch shoppers' eyes in a crowded market full of covers featuring ships and explosions. The game is also available for the GBA and X68000.

Indianapolis 500: The Simulation for the Commodore Amiga (Papyrus/Electronic Arts/1990) is a groundbreaking racing game and one of the best motorsport simulators of the 16-bit era. 1st on MS-DOS PC (1989), it's essentially the same game (although on A500 you'd turn off details, A1200 shown here enables it maxed). Game's downside is that it features only one oval track. Formula One Grand Prix a year later featuring the tracks from 1991 season, surpassed it, content-wise.

"Give it full throttle!" Aces of the Pacific was released in 1992 by Dynamix (under the Sierra umbrella). It's a WWII combat flight sim and an absolute gem. You jump into the cockpit of legendary planes like the F6F Hellcat or the Zero and fly real Pacific theater missions - Pearl Harbor, Midway, Leyte Gulf, and even the Yamamoto intercept. The career mode lets you join either the US or Japanese forces, racking up kills and surviving the war. The graphics were stunning for the time, and the variety of aircraft and historical scenarios was quite large. It was followed up a year later with Aces over Europe. I think it was pretty much a "must have" for any flight sim fan, a match made in heaven for anyone who loved that genre, and for those who also liked other classics like Their Finest Hour, Red Baron, or Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. Early 90s flight combat sims were pretty epic, despite the hardware limitations that were still common then.

In Combat, you controlled a tank, biplane, or jet and battled against another player. The gameplay was simple to grasp, yet the skill ceiling was surprisingly high. You had to carefully judge enemy movement, shot trajectories, and your own positioning to avoid getting hit. For a game that’s soon approaching 50 years old, it was remarkably advanced for its time. It remains one of the most iconic games of early gaming history. Younger generations will probably never come across it - and if they did, they’d likely laugh at its primitive graphics. But for those of us who grew up with it, Combat was one of the best two-player experiences of its era.
