Since outgoing Mayor Bruce Harrell has given up on the city, I am keeping a running list of encampments for Mayor-elect Katie Wilson. But it's unclear if she will do anything about it. 🚨Mayor Wilson double downs Tuesday and rejects claim her staff delayed Sunday briefing for ‘dignitaries’ yet falls flat on reasoning, still evades on who made the decision Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson on Tuesday again denied that anyone in her office blocked the Seattle Police Department from holding an immediate news conference Sunday night after the gang-related mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle festival. A reporter confronted Wilson with new information that between 7:45 and 8 p.m., alleging that someone from the mayor’s office told SPD leadership they could not proceed with a press conference that police wanted to hold right away, citing the arrival of “dignitaries.” “That is not my understanding, no,” Wilson said. Mayor Wilson told reporters Tuesday that there was extensive back-and-forth among her office, police and state and federal elected officials as they coordinated a response. Wilson said authorities were conducting an active search for suspects at Seattle Center and that she was told it would not be helpful for her or other elected officials to arrive at the scene during that time. “We went back and forth and eventually landed on an appropriate time to address the press and to share information,” she said. “That is my understanding.” Pressed further on whether her office issued any order that effectively prevented police from speaking sooner, Wilson referred reporters to her earlier answer. A second reporter shared with Mayor Wilson at the presser that "what makes it difficult to believe" her explanation on the delay is that SPD personnel have received extensive training and paid tens of thousands of dollars to consultants on crisis communication, to conducting pressers without her nor other "dignitaries" needed to be present. Wilson has and is facing repeated criticism about the delay of the presser to be used as a photo op for politicians instead of expediting the pubic safety information to residents. We can create a new, state of the art system of care, away from our city neighborhoods that will change the outcome for the citizens and businesses and for those who are suffering from addiction and mental illness. Hawaii conservation officers are investigating after a man from Seattle allegedly threw a rock at a Hawaiian monk seal off Maui. The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said its Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, known as DOCARE, responded Monday to reports of monk seal harassment near Lahaina after social media posts appeared to show a man throwing a rock toward a seal in the water. The raw video, provided to KOMO News by the original witness, shows the man appear to pick up a large rock off the beach and hurl it at the seal, landing near or on the animal's head and causing it to rear out of the water. According to the department, an officer contacted a 37-year-old man from Seattle who matched the description provided by a witness. Authorities said the man was detained, identified, and informed of his legal rights before requesting an attorney and declining to make a statement. The state said the investigation will be referred to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Law Enforcement because Hawaiian monk seals are protected under the federal Marine Mammal Protection Act. "Given ongoing acts of violence and intimidation perpetrated by taxi associations in our city, I would like to update you on where we are today, Monday 7 August: 1) We will not negotiate with a (literal) gun to our heads. There can be no further discussions with local Santaco leadership until their violence stops. Simple. We call on Santaco to stop the violence immediately. 2) The rule of law is not up for negotiation. We cannot negotiate which portions of the law will apply to some people and not to others. This is not the way we will ever build a successful society in South Africa. The law applies equally to everyone. We will apply the law without fear or favour. 3) We are protecting residents and commuters by opening roads, running buses with escorts, and arresting those perpetrators of violence. Our first priority is protecting residents from violent taxi thugs. Most road closures and blockages have been cleared very quickly, and traffic is free flowing for the most part. 4) On Friday there was a productive meeting of City, Province and Santaco where constructive proposals were made and agreed to. On Saturday, Santaco made entirely new demands, and since then there has only been an escalation of violence. Santaco is free to end their strike and accept the terms of Friday’s discussion at any time. If Santaco does not choose to end their strike, then we will need to be prepared to stay the course. We are prepared to do so. As expected, Wilson put an emphasis on how her office was taking the initiative to build more tiny houses and pallet shelters before the FIFA World Cup in June. But Wilson shared virtually ZERO details on drug treatment and recovery options for addicts suffering on the streets. Wilson just said "wrap around services" would be offered to residents at these shelters. In other words, no requirement to use the treatment and recovery options. It's the same talking point parroted for more than a decade by every King County Democrat that's presided over this state of emergency. This now means Homeless INC will continue to profit off taxpayers and the status quo won't change. I also confronted Mayor Wilson about the rampant drug use uncovered inside the Low Income Housing Institute's tiny house villages. LIHI claims drugs are not allowed in common areas but residents say it happens behind closed doors and most staff look the other way.
