Remembering the great Don Cherry who was born on this day in 1936. Regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the late 20th century, Cherry transcended jazz and became a pioneer in world music, with his work drawing on African, Middle Eastern, and Hindustani music. He rose to prominence in 1957 as a collaborator with Ornette Coleman, playing a pocket trumpet—a miniature instrument known for its distinctive, nasal tone. He played on Coleman’s first seven albums, which helped shape the free jazz movement, and also recorded The Avant-Garde with John Coltrane in 1960. After leaving Coleman’s band in the early 1960s, Cherry worked with notable artists like Steve Lacy, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, and Albert Ayler. He co-led the New York Contemporary Five with Shepp and John Tchicai in 1963–64 and, alongside Gato Barbieri, recorded two landmark albums, Complete Communion and Symphony for Improvisers, in the mid-1960s. Cherry called his pieces “collage compositions”, but became disillusioned with the structures and demands of the jazz club and abandoned it for a radically different form of music-making. Much of what Cherry did in the 70s laid the groundwork for what has come to be known as “world music”. He became part of a project that was a confluence of music, art, and languages from across the globe, which was more free-folk than jazz, and that valued teaching and the creative instincts of children within its sphere. It was a philosophy that, in the way it operated at least, was at odds with some of his peers, who were searching for a different truth through sound. Here, he is performing with Johnny Dyani on bass and Okay Temiz on percussion and drums live in France, 1971.

Summary of Kurogames Recruit Interview Translated by Xu I. Introduction to Types of Planning 1. Combat Planner: Responsible for character skills and combat system design. 2. Narrative Planner: Responsible for writing the storyline, worldbuilding, character backstories, etc. 3. System Planner: Responsible for UI, event portals. 4. Quest Planner: Responsible for the logical design and flow of main and side quests. 5. Level Planner: Mainly responsible for building the narrative platform (product design), creating engaging interactions, etc. II. Core Responsibilities of Level Planning Building the Narrative Platform (Product Structure Design) 1. Use whiteboards and self-made processes to communicate to teammates what kind of scene content the level planner wants, e.g., reverse design of the mission scene for Jiyan Companion Quests dungeon. 2. Make good use of existing in-game mechanics and engine tools (such as UE Blueprints) to implement gameplay prototypes. Only through multiple iterations and feedback can a satisfying outcome be achieved — e.g., using flower seeds to connect paths in Camellya Companion Quests dungeon. 3. Use scripting tools to support smooth and exciting level flow — e.g., 1.3 Black Shores skiing segment. III. Open World Level Design - Example Regions: mt firmament, Black Shores, Nimbus Sanctum, Avinoleum Pioneers of Scene Pipeline Level planners mainly handle the following in massive open-world design tasks: 1. Provide basic map size, terrain structure, main roads, and points of interest (including main quest locations) 2. Propose and lead the design of core gameplay features, such as time reversal, Tethys portals, gliding, gravity inversion, etc. 3. Use top-down maps, whiteboxes, and even self-made models to push scene artists (2D, 3D, lighting) into action For example, the “first look” view — open-world level planners must emphasize its design and guide artists to focus accordingly. IV. Growth Path of a Level Planner Creative Master - Beginner Level Designer: Familiar with the game and development environment, capable of handling simple design work and basic configurations. Example: Completing an interactive mechanism “Chronosorter” in Mt. Firmament from version 1.1 / Placing wild monsters in Mt. Firmament. Senior Level Designer: Capable of completing full level content under the team lead’s guidance. Example: Designing the scene flow of version 2.0 Exploration quest “Where Wind Returns to Celestial Realms” under guidance. - Veteran Level Designer: Able to independently handle full level flow, area or area-themed gameplay design, and proactively push downstream execution efficiently. Example: Independently designing the themed gameplay “Tethys Portal” in version 1.3, and following through with visual performance so other level teammates can configure it smoothly. ➥Extension — Version Level Owner: Leads the level team to accomplish set design goals, guides new team members, coordinates with other departments, and ensures high-quality implementation. Example: Planning the map design of version 2.2 Avinoleum, coordinating cooperation between level planners and other departments. - Creative Master: Able to lead the team in creating level content that exceeds market expectations. Key Point: Able to repeatedly do the above! Examples: — Chief planner and owner of mt firmament and Time Reversal gameplay in version 1.1 — Chief planner and owner of Black Shores map and Tethys Portal in version 1.3 — Chief planner and owner of Flight gameplay in Rinascita in version 2.0 V. Q&A Q: At the end of version 1.0, exploration felt tedious and repetitive. Although version 2.0 introduced some fresh ideas, it’s hard to see how future updates can keep innovating without falling back into the same monotony. A: Everyone already recognized that issue in 1.0, which is why we iterated heavily in 2.0. The goal is simple — to get every planner thinking. We look at everyone's interesting ideas or even creative mechanics from other games that we can integrate. These will definitely feel refreshing, so please stay tuned — it will happen for sure. Q: Older maps felt darker in tone, BGM was monotonous, and overall gameplay was dull. While Rinascita was a major improvement, it felt fragmented, as if each person built something pretty in isolation. It’s hard to describe the region with a unified theme. A: That’s true — it was indeed pieced together by many people. The disjointed feeling came from insufficient communication. We’re aware of the issue and will solve it in version 3.0 or even later versions in the 2.x series. Once there’s a clear theme, the sense of disjointedness won’t be as strong. Q: How do planners decide what kind of map to make? What’s the workflow? A: Narrative, level, quest, and programming planners all sit down together to discuss what we want to make. Everyone shares ideas one by one, and we consolidate them based on data. Q: I’m a veteran of Wuthering Waves and Punishing Gray Raven. I think the four-person team setup, stationary dialogues, map, art, tech, and story are all great. Before Wuthering Waves came out, I used to play a competitor title — Genshin... (includes critical feedback) A: During development, we didn’t aim to compete directly. Comparisons don’t help us create anything better. We’re focused on what we can do and what we’re good at. Q: For the anniversary event, it seems like there was a disconnect between the company’s and players’ expectations. A: Yes, version 2.3 didn’t do well. We’ve already apologized — it was an issue. For the next anniversary, we’ll take it more seriously. Operations is aware of the problem. We’re learning and growing with each mistake. Everyone encounters problems, but we accept them and improve. That’s the best feedback we can give our players. #punishinggrayraven #WutheringWaves

BOWIE EXITS THE 70s IN THE UK WITH KENNY EVERETT “Can you hear me, Major Tom?” 45 years ago today, David Bowie’s re-recording of Space Oddity was broadcast on the Will Kenny Everett Make It To 1980? Show. You'll be familiar with this broadcast (Shot 18 September 1979 | Broadcast 31 December 1979), but this From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free edit bears repeating. The original footage was directed for the show by Bowie’s video director of the time, David Mallet, the action takes place in a high-ceilinged padded cell and an exploding kitchen with an unflappable nurse. Speaking to Angus MacKinnon in the NME in 1980, Bowie said: “That came about because (David) Mallet wanted me to do something for his show and he wanted Space Oddity. I agreed as long as I could do it again without all its trappings and do it strictly with three instruments. Having played it with just an acoustic guitar onstage early on, I was always surprised as how powerful it was just as a song, without all the strings and synthesizers. In fact the video side of it was secondary; I really wanted to do it as a three-piece song.” Both scenes were recreated for the May 1980 filming of Ashes To Ashes, the continuity experts among you will notice the very obvious differences. So, ten years after it was originally a hit, Major Tom also had the last word of the 70s for Bowie. Another 45 years on and the impact of this version is still as powerful. Read Nacho's notes with more detail regarding the recording of both the sound and vision, along with the complete video, here: Audio Source: David Bowie | Space Oddity | Recorded Good Earth Studios | Soho, London | September 1979 | Released as B side of Alabama Song | 15 February 1980 Vocals & 12-string guitar | David Bowie Bass | Zaine Griff Piano | Hans Zimmer Drums | Andy Duncan Producer | Tony Visconti FOOTNOTE: In the US Bowie appeared on Dick Clark's Salute to the Seventies TV broadcast. Bowie mimed to an edit of the 1969 Space Oddity recording. Stills from this show were utilised for the sleeve of the aforementioned Alabama Song 45. Sadly, a decent quality version of this broadcast has yet to surface. You can find it on YouTube, but hopefully Nacho will get his hands on a higher quality version to work his magic on. #SpaceOddity55 #SpaceOddityKennyEverett #NachoBowie #NachosVideos

🚨 Alright, listen to me for a second. 🚨 The NEW version of Wayfinder, is the version of the game we needed from the start. It's pretty much unrecognizable from the model we saw months ago. ✅ Better performance, cleaner combat, better loot, better UI/UX, better sound design, you name it. 😖 Here's my problem: It could be too late. This reality really stings, because this is the game I feel the team wanted to show us from the very beginning. I truly hope their marketing team is able to pull it out the bag here and get big streamers playing it, and platforms promoting it with ads. 😈 If you're a Borderlands fan, this is the update you've been waiting for. Loot drops with rarities, levels, randomized stats, and there is TONS of transmog variety including player housing, mounts, weapon dyes, emotes, sprays & more. 🤖 If you're a Destiny fan, the worlds feel more open, with included patrols, and mini lost sector like basements with loot hidden amongst enemies/puzzles. 👹 New difficulty levels feel fun and challenging meaning the game is accessible to quite literally any skill level. There's now ARMOR SETS too, providing even more customization for your character as you level through the reworked skill trees, which now work like those seen in games such as POE/Diablo. 💸 And the best part? Zero MTX. Everything which was previously paid, is now a free addition and earned in game. I'm sure I'll get called a mega shill 🤓 for this post, but that comes with the FAME 😎 Seriously, check this game out when it launches. The team at Wayfinder have done a great job all around with this one.

YOUNG AMERICANS 50TH ANNIVERSARY VINYL DUE IN MARCH “Young American, young American, you want the young American...” DAVID BOWIE YOUNG AMERICANS 50th ANNIVERSARY HALF SPEED MASTERED LP 50th ANNIVERSARY PICTURE DISC LP WITH POSTER LIMITED EDITION RELEASES AVAILABLE 7th MARCH, 2025 ON PARLOPHONE PRE-ORDER HERE: (Link will be updated throughout the day) #BowieYoungAmericans #YoungAmericans50 7th March 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of David Bowie's ninth studio album, YOUNG AMERICANS. On the exact day of its Golden Jubilee, YOUNG AMERICANS will be issued as a limited edition 50th anniversary half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc LP pressed from the same master. The picture disc comes with a poster of the album cover. The album saw Bowie broaden his musical horizons once more, embracing what he called 'Plastic Soul' and would give Bowie his first number one single in the U.S., ‘FAME’, co-written with John Lennon and Bowie's then guitarist, Carlos Alomar. The album was partly influenced by the 'Philly Sound' and recorded in Philadelphia at Sigma Sound studios during a break in the DIAMOND DOGS tour with a band that featured amongst others Bowie stalwart Mike Garson on keys, along with the late Luther Vandross on vocals and David Sanborn on saxophone. During the Tony Visconti produced sessions at Sigma Sound, Bowie immersed himself in soul music and created a new persona called The Gouster, a slang term for a hip street character. An early version of the album using this title was issued on the boxset WHO CAN I BE NOW? (1974-1976). When the tour recommenced, Bowie radically reworked the setlist to incorporate the new material and stripped the elaborate production of the tour back to reflect a radically new musical direction. At the end of the tour in December ’74, sessions continued at The Record Plant and, while recording in New York, Bowie connected with John Lennon, where they recorded a cover of The Beatles ‘ACROSS THE UNIVERSE’ and a new collaborative composition, ‘FAME’ at Electric Lady Studios. The New York sessions were co-produced by David and Record Plant engineer Harry Maslin. Bowie opted not to tour following YOUNG AMERICANS’ release, and within nine months, had moved on again, releasing his next album, STATION TO STATION, and reinventing himself once again in the persona of The Thin White Duke. This new pressing of YOUNG AMERICANS was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Record Plant master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer. The half-speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios. So, Google said, "Hey, wanna make a film for #GoogleIO ? You have Carte Blanche." 🤯 For a brain that’s been mainlining animation and questionable VHS tapes since forever, that kind of freedom is both a dream and a mild panic attack. To be honest, until recently I never really thought film making was in the cards for me. Life happened, and although I ended up being a designer, film was more of a distant dream of a young version of myself. Following the unexpected attention and warm reception for Kitsune earlier this year, Electric Pink came out as my own self-administered therapy session: a coming-of-age story that’s basically me trying to figure out my own creative wiring, from the fuzzy nostalgia of childhood to the full-on HD chaos of the present. Turns out, the path to making stuff is paved with a lot of self-doubt and sudden left turns. I’m hoping this film can build on the connection Kitsune fostered. For this project, focused on exclusively using a lengthy process involving leveraging Imagen 3 to create the base of still frames (Imagen was amazing at iteratively enabling me to lock art direction) which I would then heavily retouch and prepare to get them as perfect as needed. Then each scene would be run through VEO2 to get animated clips based on those images (and then a very obvious bunch of sound design, voice design, editing, post-production and what not). Now, what's been amazing as I was nearing the end of this project, is to see individual separate tools converge towards becoming "Flow": Google's AI filmmaking tool built on DeepMind's brilliant tools (Veo, Imagen, Gemini). I must say it’s been fascinating seeing how this tech can translate the random noise in my head into something… well, film-like. It felt like a real step forward in allowing creators to iterate and refine their vision without getting bogged down in organization, and for example having an opportunity to use a first-frame to last-frame interpolation proved to be extremely useful as I could fully control the action I was aiming for. Now in its current version, Flow offers even more features such as the scene builder to easily expand storylines, or ingredients to control character, object, and environment consistency...can't wait to dig more into those possibilities...they definitely would have made my life easier during the creation of this film which I hope you will enjoy. so I started with FreeCAD, since i am a linux guy, haven't touched windows since the past 8 years. Also I did this online course from Uni of California Irvine on "building your hardware for your embedded and IoT projects" which had FreeCAD as the main CAD software. FreeCAD was free, and fun, yeah a bit buggy sometimes but gets the job done, since initially all the CAD work i had was just builidng cases, or mounts, or some light hobby stuff. So FreeCAD did just fine. Then I joined a company as a product engineer where I worked with LiFePo4 home energy storage battery packs and was responsible for all the modules of the pack (Cells, BMS, MCUs, Touch Display ) mainly the embedded system. Since I was the product engineer, I'd have back and forth convos with the CAD designers off the battery pack box/casing. I didn't really do any CAD work on that project, tho it seemed really interesting to me. They used Solidworks, and I installed windows for it(swallowing that was difficult); to do Solidworks in my free time which I hardly got. I tried Solidworks and I kinda liked it. But then I quit the job and started working on my SAAS products. A few months into it, it's not fun anymore, slowly getting started with CAD and eventually to electronics to hardware products. Now, I want to go about CAD. I'll be doing a 30 days CAD challenge increasing in complexity and will be sharing daily progress here! It was day 2; I designer a bolt and a nut. I'm going with Fusion 360 for now, coz i like the UI/UX and the hobbyist version is free. So yeah. This is so much fun, i completely lost track of time while doing it. Gemini on the side is alot helpful.
