Clint Eastwood bought the script for Unforgiven (1992) in the mid 70s. He purposely sat on the rights for over 15 years, waiting until he was physically old enough to believably play the washed up, weather beaten gunslinger William Munny.

In Unforgiven (1992), Clint Eastwood gives one of the best performances of his career by completely stripping away the myth of the classic Western hero. William Munny isn’t fearless or glamorous — he’s old, exhausted, haunted, and trying to escape the violence of his past. And that’s exactly what makes the performance unforgettable.

The script for John Wick (2014) was originally written for a 75 year old man like Clint Eastwood or Harrison Ford. Keanu Reeves loved the script so much he convinced the producers to change the role for him.

IN THE LINE OF FIRE was released 33 years ago today. John Malkovich accepted the role without reading the script. The chance to play opposite Clint Eastwood was enough, and the performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Clint Eastwood was never supposed to kiss 12-year-old Pamelyn Ferdin in The Beguiled. He and the director came up with it. The child actress at the time said: “He was supposed to cover my mouth.” “When it was over, I remained frozen for a moment.”

David Letterman picked the wrong guy to tease this night. In 1992, Clint Eastwood made his final Johnny Carson appearance, with David Letterman there too. Letterman thought he was pretty cute giving Clint grief for not wearing a tie. The audience booed, and Clint’s comeback later in the interview was perfect. Lesson learned, don’t mess with Clint Eastwood. He made my day.

In The Beguiled (1971), Clint Eastwood kissed 11-year-old actress Pamelyn Ferdin on the mouth during a scene to get her genuine reaction, which wasn't scripted. Eastwood was 40 at the time and in the rehearsed script he only covered her mouth with his hand. This is criminal.

"Play Misty for Me" (1971) was the directorial debut for Clint Eastwood & the first scene he decided to direct in the movie was Don Siegel's cameo in the bar. As a joke, Eastwood made Don Siegel do 11 takes, then told the cameraman to put the film in the camera. When Clint Eastwood was asked why he chose this particular scene as the first, he said, "Actually, it just worked out that way. I tell everybody I did it that way because it was my first day on the set, and I wanted some body to be more nervous than I was, but actually I just started with that sequence because I wanted to start with something moderate, not too rough. We had three days scheduled for it, since it was Don’s first acting job, but we did it in a little over a day. He was very nervous during the first few takes, but by the second morning, he was an old pro." (Clint Eastwood's interview with Stuart M. Kaminsky, 1971 & IMDb) P.S: On this day, 55 years ago, "Play Misty for Me" (1971) premiered in El Paso, Texas, USA.

Clint Eastwood once talked about casting Richard Harris in Unforgiven and how an insane piece of timing sealed the deal. Clint Eastwood: I was doing Unforgiven and I wanted Richard Harris to play a character of English Bob in the movie. So I called him, he was living down in the Bahamas somewhere, and I called his house and the lady answered and she said, just a second. I said, tell him Clint Eastwood's calling, and all of a sudden she comes back and says, who is this guy? I says, it's Clint, tell him Clint's calling. And all of a sudden he comes on, he gets on, is this Bob? Because the irony was, he was downstairs in the TV room watching High Plains Drifter at the moment. So he tells me this story, and of course he was flipped out that I wanted him because he loved doing westerns. Big actors usually play hard to get when directors call, but catching a guy while he is literally watching your movie on TV erases all negotiating leverage.

Clint Eastwood on whether "Mystic River" (2003) is as good as "Unforgiven" (1992) "Interviewer: Do you think 'Unforgiven' (1992) the best movie you have ever made? Eastwood: I don’t know what the best movie I ever made is. I just make them. It’s for somebody else to judge them. I am happy with the current one ['Mystic River' (2003)]. Interviewer: You’ve got to be happy, people are saying that 'Mystic River' ranks right up there with 'Unforgiven'. Eastwood: Well, I hope it does. When I look at the film, I think this is what I intended to do. It came out the way I intended. Now, whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent, it’s got to be the eyes of the beholder out there. This child has now gone out into the world to be judged on its own merits." (Clint Eastwood's interview with Charlie Rose, 2003) P.S: On this day, 23 years ago, "Mystic River" (2003) premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, France.

Matt Damon says Clint Eastwood told him Unforgiven was the script he went back to after 5 years of failed rewrites “I said to him, 'Hey boss, you know that scene on Tuesday, do you mind if I tinker with the dialogue?' And he goes, 'Yeah, sure. Go ahead.'” “I go, 'I wrote it and I rewrote it all weekend. I wrote it probably 27 drafts and then I got it perfect and I looked back and it was exactly the same as I originally was.'” “He goes, 'I worked for five years on this thing and it wasn't getting better and I couldn't figure it out.'” “He said, 'I'm making your script exactly as you wrote it.' And I said, 'No way. What movie?' And he said, 'Unforgiven.'”

When the film won the Oscar for Best Picture, Martin Scorsese said that he was surprised the film had won. Scorsese said that because the film is such a tough, nasty, and violent film, he never thought about the idea of awards while he was filming it. Martin Scorsese won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars over Clint Eastwood nominated for Letters from Iwo Jima (2006). The two competed two years earlier when Scorsese was nominated in both categories for The Aviator (2004) and Eastwood winning both Oscars for Million Dollar Baby (2004). 🎬 : The Departed (2006)

💔Harvey Morrison Sherratt was nine years old when he died in July. He waited years for scoliosis surgery. He was failed badly. Today, the number of children on spinal surgery waiting lists grows. The government breaks its promises. Children wait in agony. Enough is enough. No more excuses. Government must act to get children the operations that would change their lives! #JusticeForHarvey
