In 1999, Disney recalled 3.4 million VHS copies of The Rescuers (1977) after viewers discovered a single frame containing an image of a nude woman hidden in the background. During a scene where the characters Bernard and Bianca fly through New York City on the back of an albatross, a photographic image of a topless woman was inserted into two non-consecutive background frames. It went entirely unnoticed during the 1977 theatrical release and the initial VHS release. It was only when home viewers began using the pause-and-frame-advance features on newer VCRs decades later that the hidden image was spotted Disney was forced to issue a massive recall of about 3.4 million VHS tapes in January 1999, offering free replacements. It was the first time in history Disney recalled a home video over objectionable content. Disney never explicitly identified who inserted the image.
