This guy does realize he gives his customers no fucking control with his walled garden, right? Is he just gaslighting companies that spend hundreds of billions on his chips?

I'd side with Jensen. For most apps, closed APIs are cheaper. Open models are about control: data, fine-tuning, compliance and avoiding lock-in.

Buying hardware is overkill for most. But open models on cloud services is cheapest.

A company that loses its competitive advantage by allowing closed models to steal their IP will discover that closed models are so expensive that they lead to business extinction. The price per token is not a useful metric in business: risk and value added per token are more relevant. PLTR understands this better than any other top layer company.

It's a make-vs-buy call. Closed is cheaper until your margins depend on someone else's pricing and rate limits — then control stops being a luxury.

Closed models allow a predatory company to look over your shoulder and steal all of your proprietary data. That’s why they want you using them.

Jensen basically ended the “open is always cheaper” argument.

Open models become worth it the day the closed provider's pricing makes you hunt for the exit hatch.

Privacy concerns are better handled by local models, or self-hosted models, which allow for data to not transit on the cloud (and while I'm not saying that cloud companies would directly use this data without your consent, the risk of _interception_ is real). Cloud models though, have usually much higher "reasoning capabilities". Therefore, they can be used, through carefully drafted prompts which don't reveal the privacy concerns you care about, and deliver the required insights for your local work. This workflow is safe and powerful, allowing you to leverage the cloud model power, while having a safe, local setup.

for agents, control means freezing the behavioral stack: weights, tokenizer, tool contracts, evals. a closed endpoint can change how your fleet acts overnight while every line of your code stays the same.

As long as the model itself is not devalued from its craftsmanship, technical virtuosity, artistry. There is beauty and achievement that is no longer considered but just an emphasis on the cost. It’s not just something to sell chips as is the business case that many have made. You’re not just creating a model you are creating an ecosystem that interfaces into that model. Providing more depth of inferences. Instead of improving just to show that you can one up humans or other humans building models with a math problem. Or barreling towards some above human intelligence that can eliminate humans at the end of the decade. I am just baffled at the deemphasis of the model or on the other side why are they trying to optimize silicon instead of seeking new and useful inferences, instead of one uping hype, doom. General silicon for general human use of AI.

Makes sense coming from someone who sells the hardware either way. Still a fair point though, self hosting only feels cheap until you count your own time as a cost

the cheaper claim assumes everyone runs in the cloud forever. that's the thing local-first is built to break. control also means nobody can deprecate the model you shipped on, and user data never leaves the device. token price isn't the whole bill

I think this is only correct from a certain size of a company. For small business and entrepreneurs buying a DGX Spark and using Qwen3.8 or DeepSeek V4 Flash does the trick and is way cheaper than hosted gated services.

Closed is cheaper until the workflow is yours. Then control is the cost you should have budgeted for.

But you totally can have open models in your own clouds spaces on a SAS model, with users paying for your “Specialized” use case fine tuning…
