I'd side with Jensen. For most apps, closed APIs are cheaper. Open models are about control: data, fine-tuning, compliance and avoiding lock-in.

A company that loses its competitive advantage by allowing closed models to steal their IP will discover that closed models are so expensive that they lead to business extinction. The price per token is not a useful metric in business: risk and value added per token are more relevant. PLTR understands this better than any other top layer company.

Privacy concerns are better handled by local models, or self-hosted models, which allow for data to not transit on the cloud (and while I'm not saying that cloud companies would directly use this data without your consent, the risk of _interception_ is real). Cloud models though, have usually much higher "reasoning capabilities". Therefore, they can be used, through carefully drafted prompts which don't reveal the privacy concerns you care about, and deliver the required insights for your local work. This workflow is safe and powerful, allowing you to leverage the cloud model power, while having a safe, local setup.

for agents, control means freezing the behavioral stack: weights, tokenizer, tool contracts, evals. a closed endpoint can change how your fleet acts overnight while every line of your code stays the same.

As long as the model itself is not devalued from its craftsmanship, technical virtuosity, artistry. There is beauty and achievement that is no longer considered but just an emphasis on the cost. It’s not just something to sell chips as is the business case that many have made. You’re not just creating a model you are creating an ecosystem that interfaces into that model. Providing more depth of inferences. Instead of improving just to show that you can one up humans or other humans building models with a math problem. Or barreling towards some above human intelligence that can eliminate humans at the end of the decade. I am just baffled at the deemphasis of the model or on the other side why are they trying to optimize silicon instead of seeking new and useful inferences, instead of one uping hype, doom. General silicon for general human use of AI.

the cheaper claim assumes everyone runs in the cloud forever. that's the thing local-first is built to break. control also means nobody can deprecate the model you shipped on, and user data never leaves the device. token price isn't the whole bill

I think this is only correct from a certain size of a company. For small business and entrepreneurs buying a DGX Spark and using Qwen3.8 or DeepSeek V4 Flash does the trick and is way cheaper than hosted gated services.

Hugging Face is the open model hub: it hosts model weights, datasets, evals, & demo apps, and maintains the open-source libraries (like transformers) used to run and train them. I think of it like GitHub, but for AI models. You can download open models and run them on your own machines. In this series we'll cover what open source and open weight models are, how they work, how to run them yourself, and why they're important. By the way - this video is edited entirely with Claude! In between major AI model breakthroughs, new models still ship, but they’re not fundamentally expanding what you can do with them. Braintrust CEO Ankur Goyal says that’s exactly when open source starts to surge: "When new models come out, people forget about open source and forget about economics because it changes fundamentally what you can do." "Programming is a good example. The workflow today is completely different than it was a year ago. If you tried to use models from a year ago today, you wouldn't be able to do crazy stuff like OpenClaw or whatever people are building nowadays." Sam on Kimi, distillation, and open source: “I have always assumed that there are going to be great cheap models in the world, and we better be the greatest and the cheapest. You get a better deal today, at least at a particular latency, using OpenAI's models than Kimi. We distill our own models. That’s how we make smaller, cheaper models. That’s a very good thing to do. There will clearly be an important place for open source models in the world and people that will want their own weights. We have so much usage of our models that we do not need to be a gigantically high-margin business to be able to afford model training. I would rather people not distill from us, for sure. But this is not in my top ten list of worries.”

This is the biggest piece of the puzzle. This is how to understand people 90% of the way. You just... notice what they do, and get out of the way, and watch them do it. And if they need sticks, you give them sticks. And if you don't like what they do, you have to get away from them. You cannot train dam-building into them or out of them any more than you can with a beaver. A beaver wants to build a dam because it is a beaver. Alex Karp went on TV and said his enterprise customers are done letting AI companies quietly steal the alpha out of their business, and the CEO of Together AI explained on CNBC exactly how that theft works. Karp said his customers are livid. They feel they pay for tokens that create nothing while handing over the secret sauce of their own company. Then Vipul Ved Prakash laid out the mechanism. Every time you send your data to a company with very smart models, you hand them the recipe to rebuild what you do. Your data is the thing that makes you money. And you are pushing it straight into a competitor's system. The smarter the models get, the more they learn from what you feed them. This is why companies are moving to open models, and it was never really about price. You can download an open model, run it inside your own walls, and never let your data leave the building. It scores 81 against the top closed model's 85, and runs up to sixty times cheaper. Half the Fortune 500 is already running open models from Hugging Face.
