On the eve of Teachers' Day, I paid my heartfelt tribute today to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan at Dhanadhanya Auditorium. I also extended my sincere respect to all the teachers and educators who have illuminated our lives with knowledge for generations. I am proud to have acknowledged the extraordinary contributions of 73 teachers in the field of education in Bengal at this grand event by presenting them with the 'Siksha Ratna' award. Additionally, 12 schools in the State were honoured as 'Sera Vidyalaya' for their overall excellence in academics and sports. Today, we also honoured 387 meritorious students who secured a place in the merit lists of this year's Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, Alim, Fazil, High-Madrasah, ICSE, ISC, CBSE (Class 10 and 12), Joint Entrance, and Vocational examinations. This included meritorious tribal and Scheduled Caste students, who were also felicitated. I once again extend my best wishes to all of them. Our 'Ma-Mati-Manush' government has introduced various scholarships and other benefits so that the students of Bengal don't have to worry about their education. 93 lakh girls are now part of the. ‘Kanyashree’ program. We have provided approximately Rs. 16,000 crore to these girls under this programme. More than 1.25 crore scholarships have been given to tribal and scheduled caste students under ‘Shikkhashree’ scheme. Under 'Aikyashree' and other minority scholarships, approximately 4.56 crore scholarships have been provided to minority students at a cost of Rs. 9,747 cr. About 40,000 minority students have also received Rs. 316 crore in educational loans. 6.65 lakh scholarships have been given to OBC students under the ‘Medhashree’ program. 36.55 lakh students have received Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship. 53 lakh students have received smartphones under 'Taruner Swapna' at a cost of Rs. 5,300 crore. We have already distributed more than 1.38 crore bicycles under ‘Sabooj Sathi’ with a total cost of approximately Rs. 4,730 crore. The distribution of bicycles has started this year as well, and an additional 12.50 lakh students will receive them at a cost of Rs. 525 crore. Approximately Rs. 10,000 crore has been spent to provide students with free textbooks, school uniforms, school bags, and shoes. We have seen the benefits of our work. The dropout rate has significantly decreased, from the primary to the higher secondary levels. In 2011, the dropout rate at the higher secondary level was 17.48%, which has now dropped to 3.30%. Today, I also unveiled the book, 'The Gems of Bengal, 2025', a compilation of the life stories and aspirations of the State's meritorious students. This day has become more memorable for me for a very personal reason, also. I once had the opportunity to be a part of the noble profession of teaching. From 1975 to 1978, for three years, I taught at Manmatha Nath Nandan Boys and Girls School (now known as Bhawanipur Modern School). Today, the school's headmistress, Dr. Srilata De, and one of the members of the school's management committee, Mr. Biswanath Basu, honoured me as a former teacher. This recognition brings me great pride and joy. Finally, I would like to tell my young students: apart from being good at your studies, you must become good human beings as well. You must work for the betterment of the nation, for the people, and for Bengal. Remember, true intelligence builds society. All teachers of Bengal are our pride. THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX | How to solve Kerala’s train travel problem once and for all with ₹150 crore? 🧵 In 2012, the Oomen Chandy government came up with a plan to build a high-speed rail corridor from Mangalore to Trivandrum. The estimated cost was around ₹1.18 lakh crore. It was planned to be funded through a Japanese loan from JICA. The project was opposed by the then opposition parties. The project was eventually dropped. In 2020, the present Left government under Pinarayi Vijayan brought back the high-speed rail project, named SilverLine, with a cost estimate of ₹64,000 crore. These numbers were rejected by NITI Aayog, which estimated the cost at around ₹1.2 lakh crore. There were strong public protests against forceful land acquisition, and the project was dropped by the government in 2022. We also strongly opposed it, as our estimate was that the final cost would easily cross ₹1.5 lakh crore, ticket prices would go up to around ₹6,000 to make it viable, and there would not be enough ridership. Now it is BJP’s turn. They opposed both earlier projects and have now come up with a new proposal using DMRC’s former chairman, Padma Vibhushan Dr. E. Sreedharan, who later joined BJP. This high-speed rail proposal, unlike SilverLine, is 90% elevated and ends at Kannur instead of Kasargod or Mangalore. The estimated cost is around ₹200 crore per kilometre, with an overall cost of more than ₹80,000 crore. Fair enough. However, the estimate of ₹200 crore per kilometre looks like an underestimate when we look at the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train. That project started with a cost of ₹216 crore per kilometre and has now reached ₹393 crore per kilometre, even though it is only half completed. By the time it is finished, the cost could touch ₹500 crore per kilometre, if not more. Leaving these big and fancy projects aside, let us come back to the core problem and look at it differently. Take a close look at this video. This shows the weekly train schedule from Kannur towards the south. If you observe carefully, the green-coloured trains are those that run within Kerala, while the red ones are outstation trains that either terminate at stations in Kerala or pass through the state. Impact After Term | 17 : From Completing Long-Pending Projects to Building Future-Ready IT Infrastructure For over two decades, ELCOT has played a pivotal role in expanding Tamil Nadu's IT ecosystem beyond Chennai by developing IT parks and Special Economic Zones across Tier-II and Tier-III cities. As global technology companies increasingly sought world-class plug-and-play office spaces, the State announced new ELCOT IT Towers in Sholinganallur (2017) and later in Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli (2020). However, these projects remained stalled for several years due to administrative delays, environmental clearances and the COVID-19 pandemic. After assuming office as Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services in 2023, Dr. Dr P Thiaga Rajan (PTR) brought the projects under direct review, resolved pending administrative issues and accelerated construction. The results followed in quick succession. The Tiruchirappalli ELCOT IT Tower (₹59.57 crore; 1.16 lakh sq. ft.) was inaugurated in February 2024, creating infrastructure for 2,800+ IT jobs, strengthening Tiruchirappalli's position as an emerging technology destination. This was followed by the Coimbatore ELCOT IT Tower (₹158.32 crore; 2.94 lakh sq. ft.) in November 2024, with capacity for 3,500+ IT jobs and , 100% of its office space had already been leased on the very day of inauguration, reflecting strong industry demand. In February 2026, the Sholinganallur ELCOT IT Tower (₹88.21 crore; 2.33 lakh sq. ft.) was inaugurated, adding infrastructure for another 3,200+ IT jobs, further expanding Chennai's technology ecosystem. Beyond completing long-pending infrastructure projects, efforts also focused on preparing Tamil Nadu for the next phase of technology-led growth. As Finance Minister, Dr. PTR announced the TN Tech City project in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2023–24, envisioning a world-class technology district to attract global technology companies and investments. This vision was further strengthened at UmagineTN 2025, where the Hon'ble Chief Minister announced a 20 lakh sq. ft. AI-Focused IT Park at Vilankurichi, Coimbatore, aimed at supporting the State's rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence ecosystem. Together, these initiatives transformed years of pending projects into productive infrastructure. A shocking incident surfaced from #Gujarat's #Rajkot, where a man assaulted his female business partner. The incident, which reportedly took place at The Spire-2 building near Shital Park in the city in June this year, was recorded on CCTV. A spine-chilling video of the assault also surfaced online. A complaint in this matter was registered on December 9. The accused has been identified as Maulik Nadpara. According to reports, Nadpara started assaulting the woman after she asked him to focus on the business. In the CCTV clip, it could be seen that the woman was sitting on a chair when the accused started assaulting her. He dragged her down from the chair by pulling her hair. The 36-year-old woman had reportedly taken a loan of Rs 60 lakh and started a packaging product business. They set up an office in "The Spire 2" building at Shitalpark Circle on 150 Feet Ring Road, reported the media house. As per the report, when the business started to decline, the woman asked Nadpara to start paying attention. However, the man got agitated and reportedly started abusing the woman. He then held her by her throat and pulled her down. The woman claimed that Nadpara even kicked, punched, and hit her with a plastic pipe. Meanwhile, in another CCTV footage, the accused can also be seen thrashing the woman in front of her daughter. He grabbed her by her throat and hit her brutally. According to the report, Nadpara kept assaulting the woman until she collapsed. The woman filed a complaint against the man on December 9 at University Police Station. A detailed investigation has been launched into the matter. The police arrested the accused.

Building on that success, 11 crore trees will be planted this year and 25 crore next year. In Gadchiroli, 40 lakh saplings are being planted this year and 60 lakh more next year. Saplings have been sourced from Rajahmundry and local nurseries are being nurtured to grow saplings of the same strength and standard, rooted in the region and ready for the future. Each tree will be geo-tagged and tracked, and officers have come forward to adopt saplings, turning this into a people-led movement to make Gadchiroli the greenest district. $Coming to Cooch Behar brings with it a renewed sense of purpose drawn from the affection, dignity, and unshakeable resolve of its people. Before addressing the public meeting at Ras Mela Ground, I spent time with local folk artists and paid my respects at the feet of Roy Saheb Thakur Panchanan Barma, social reformer, educationist, and the moral anchor of the Rajbanshi community. I did not go to Cooch Behar to ask for votes. I went to confront manufactured fear, because fear is the only tool left to the BJP. Unable to defeat Bengal democratically, they have now resorted to punishing our people. Funds to the tune of ₹2 lakh crore, under various Central schemes like MGNREGA, Awas Yojana, Gram Sadak Yojana, and Jal Jeevan Mission, have been deliberately blocked out of political vindictiveness. Even after clear directions from the High Court and the Supreme Court, the Central Government continues to impose restrictive conditions to deny employment to our rural poor. We will not accept policies that are anti-worker, anti-poor, and anti-Bengal. When MGNREGA was choked, we launched Karmashree from our own funds, generating 104.58 crore man-days of work for over 78.31 lakh job card holders, at an expenditure of ₹20,776 crore. We launched Banglar Bari, ensuring a roof over the heads of 12 lakh families, with 16 lakh more set to benefit. Under Pathashree I, II, and III, over 39,000 km of rural roads have already been built at a cost of ₹10,902 crore, with another 20,000 km underway. BJP’s communal agenda seeks to fracture Bengal along religious and linguistic lines. But as long as our Ma-Mati-Manush Sarkaar stands, no communal poison will be allowed to take root in this soil. I do not practise politics using faith as a weapon. I respect all religions equally. The same forces that once pushed the nation into the abyss of demonetisation are now attempting to disenfranchise citizens through SIR. Speaking Bangla is being criminalised; Bengali-speaking citizens are being harassed and brutalised in BJP-ruled states. They insult Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, slander Raja Ram Mohan Roy, vandalise Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar’s bust, and then lecture us on nationalism? Bengal needs no lessons from those who neither understand its history nor respect its culture. Bengalis have given their blood for this nation before. If required, we will stand again, to protect our land, our language, and our people. Once again, I say, do not be afraid. “May I Help You” camps will continue. Not a single eligible voter’s name will be allowed to be deleted. Details shared by Debasis Nanda I have been driving for years and have covered around 1.5 lakh kilometres combined my swift & Kushaq, but this was by far the worst accident I have experienced. Here's what happened. I was driving from Hoskote to my office in Mahadevapura, Bangalore. Just before the Hoskote toll, there is a speed breaker right after the flyover ends. I was driving at a reasonable speed and started slowing down as I approached the speed breaker. I t was raining a bit that day. I checked my rear-view mirror while braking and noticed a vehicle coming at high speed. It looked like the driver had lost control. I barely had a second to react. I thought of accelerating to avoid the impact, but there was a Tata Altroz right in front of me, so I had no room to move. Within moments, a Tata Intra crashed into the rear of my Kushaq with tremendous force, pushing my car into the Altroz ahead. Thankfully, I escaped without any injuries. This incident really proved the solid build quality of the Kushaq. I immediately stopped the driver of the Intra. He admitted that he wasn't paying attention and said that even after applying the brakes, the vehicle didn't stop in time. However, after reviewing the dashcam footage, it was clear that he had enough distance to stop if he had reacted earlier.The Hoskote traffic police arrived after noticing the traffic jam. I showed them the dashcam footage, and they escorted us to the nearby traffic police station. I asked the Tata driver to call the vehicle owner, and after some discussion, they agreed to compensate me directly instead of relying only on the insurance claim. The traffic police were extremely helpful throughout the process. My Skoda service advisor initially estimated the repair cost to be around ₹1 lakh. Based on that, I asked them to pay at least ₹30,000. They initially offered ₹20,000, and we finally settled at ₹25,000. However, after handing over the car to the Skoda body shop, the final repair estimate has gone up to around ₹1.5 lakh. On top of that, I still have to bear 10% of the repair cost as per my insurance policy. #driveresponsibly

A sensational theft has come to light in #Bengaluru’s #Marathahalli area, where gold, diamonds, silver, and cash worth ₹18 crore were stolen from the residence of builder Shivakumar in #Yamaluru. The accused are a couple who had joined the house as domestic workers just 20 days earlier, police said. The robbery took place on January 25, when no family members were present at the house. Shivakumar was on a foreign trip to the Philippines with friends, while his wife, son, and daughter-in-law had gone to a relative’s house. When the family returned, they found the lockers broken and valuables missing, bringing the crime to light. Police identified the accused as Dinesh and Kamala, a couple who had joined the household recently. Kamala worked as a house help, while Dinesh was employed as a security guard. Within a short span of 20 days, they gained the family’s trust by efficiently handling all assigned duties. Before their arrival, another couple, Vikas and Maya, who had worked at the house for nine months, had expressed their intention to leave for their native place. Shivakumar had asked them to arrange replacements before leaving, following which Dinesh and Kamala were hired. According to police, Kamala deliberately took the other house help outside on the pretext of going out. As soon as they left, Dinesh became active and reportedly called five to six accomplices to the house. The gang first switched off the UPS system and then broke open lockers located in bedrooms on the ground floor and first floor. The accused fled with 11.5 kg of gold, diamond jewellery, 5 kg of silver, and ₹11.5 lakh in cash, amounting to a total value of ₹18 crore. Police suspect the involvement of a Nepali gang, indicating that the crime was carried out with careful planning. The #MarathahalliPolice have registered a case and launched an intensive search operation to trace the accused and recover the stolen valuables. Multiple teams have been formed, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined.

When the family returned, they found the lockers broken and valuables missing, bringing the crime to light. Police identified the accused as Dinesh and Kamala, a couple who had joined the household recently. Kamala worked as a house help, while Dinesh was employed as a security guard. Within a short span of 20 days, they gained the family’s trust by efficiently handling all assigned duties. Before their arrival, another couple, Vikas and Maya, who had worked at the house for nine months, had expressed their intention to leave for their native place. Shivakumar had asked them to arrange replacements before leaving, following which Dinesh and Kamala were hired. According to police, Kamala deliberately took the other house help outside on the pretext of going out. As soon as they left, Dinesh became active and reportedly called five to six accomplices to the house. The gang first switched off the UPS system and then broke open lockers located in bedrooms on the ground floor and first floor. The accused fled with 11.5 kg of gold, diamond jewellery, 5 kg of silver, and ₹11.5 lakh in cash, amounting to a total value of ₹18 crore. Police suspect the involvement of a Nepali gang, indicating that the crime was carried out with careful planning. The #MarathahalliPolice have registered a case and launched an intensive search operation to trace the accused and recover the stolen valuables. Multiple teams have been formed, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined.

Last year, 27 lakh visitors and book sales of ₹23 crore reflected its extraordinary resonance, and this year promises to surpass even those milestones. With Argentina as the focal theme country and participation from over 20 nations, this edition deepens our enduring cultural bonds and reaffirms Bengal’s place as a global crossroads of ideas. Nearly 1,100 stalls await readers until 3 February, open daily from noon to 8 PM with free entry. Our State Government has extended full support by providing the permanent venue, Boi Mela Prangan, and through active participation by multiple departments. I have also entrusted the Information & Cultural Affairs Department with the construction of 'Boi Tirtha' at a cost of ₹10 crore, a lasting tribute to our collective love for books and learning. The Kolkata Book Fair is not only Bengal’s pride but a shared treasure of the world, a space of discovery, dialogue, and imagination, where differences of caste, creed, class, and religion dissolve as minds meet through the universal language of the written word. May this great confluence continue to illuminate hearts, expand horizons, and strengthen the bonds that unite humanity through knowledge.
