Codex can now hand off threads between local and remote hosts. Start work on your laptop, send it to a remote box before you close the lid, bring it back later. And yes, Codex can orchestrate the handoff for you.

wait but it’s friday

its fun friday

indeed

what?!

One simple feature request - just like on the phone app, can you add the ability control instances of codex desktop from another codex desktop? That handoff feature would be helpful.

what happens to the code? do you have to manage that yourself? assuming this uses remote control for thread syncing

The code / git state is also handed off!

slick -- how does it reconcile if you already have some state on the remote box?

You don’t have to reconcile it manually. As long as the destination has the same repo with some shared Git history, Codex creates a separate worktree, transfers the missing Git objects as a bundle, checks out your branch, and restores any uncommitted changes. The remote’s existing checkout—even if dirty—stays untouched.

@mattrickard Since this feature already exists, why not just add a toggle switch instead of sticking with a prompt-based trigger?

@mattrickard

@jxnlco isn’t it better to just do the work while connected to the remote host? what’s the use case for having the repo locally?

@jxnlco The local development ergonomics are nice for frontend work bc I can run local dev builds and manually QA the changes

@roivroberto @jxnlco You can’t manually test changes being developed on a remote box?

I mostly work on desktop app development, so it is much easier to manually test on my local machine. But long term I agree that we should figure out a way to make testing easier on remote boxes. But for other types of development it prob is already possible to do most testing remotely

@roivroberto @jxnlco In the instances where you hand off to remote is it effectively dead reckoning the code then? You just run/test when you pick it up again locally later?

Yeah, for desktop work that’s basically right. The remote box can still kind of dead reckon from the code, tests, and logs and make useful progress, even if it can’t fully QA the app on its own. That’s useful if I want to kick something off from my phone while my laptop’s offline, or hand off an in-progress task before a commute so it keeps going after I close the lid. Then I bring it back local to test. For a lot of non-desktop work, though, remote already has most of the affordances it needs.

@alexanderchopan yesssss

I made codex app to have teammode through that lazycodex plugin

codex can go further like having teammode yes i just fixed codex you're welcome

Banger

does the handoff need a preexisitng remote env setup, or does it create one? how about stuff like env vars/secrets?

Good, but fix this message/problem asap: It pops up since yesterday on nearly every thread.

game changer

ngl the real test is what happens to all the half finished stuff i abandoned in like 4 different envs codex bout to expose my whole graveyard of dead branches 💀

A subtle shift is happening. For decades, work was tied to a device. Now it's increasingly tied to context. The agent remembers where the work left off, while compute moves wherever it's available.

May I ask question? Should I instruct it to migrate to the cloud using natural language? Or is there a specific command I should use?

@tszzl When is any of this going to be available in the cli/on Linux?

Has this been released yet?

can you explain what does that even mean?

@jxnlco I think this is what actually makes remote hosts useful. I remember having a bunch of workarounds just because of this alone.

Can we get a button for it?

wow

@SIGKITTEN This is very cool.

@jxnlco Killer feature - would be amazing to sync mcps and config toml between cloud and local as well

This is really useful. Can you also add native handoff of threads between different existing projects? (And also the option to handoff a thread to a new project)

but why?

Awesome

How to set up a remote box tho?

lets go @guinnesschen !!!

@georgekontridze you were asking for this

@wey_gu 来了!

@bcherny, this would be a nice feature

actually incredible we need skill sync across hosts next!
