You Are Not the Body or the Mind: You Are the Witness of the Three States of Experience All our experience happens in one of three states of experience: the waking state, the dream state, and the deep, dreamless sleep state. In the waking state (which is what you’re in now, as you read this), you are aware of and identify with your body and mind. In the dream state, you lose all awareness of your body and you stop identifying with it, yet you remain aware of and identified with your mind, immersed in the dreams that it creates. When you wake, you regain awareness of your body and mind and you take them to be who you are. But this is a mistake. You are neither the body nor the mind—you are the ātmā, the avasthā traya sākṣī. Avasthā traya sākṣī means the witness (sākṣī) of the three states (avasthā traya). It is the unchanging consciousness, that remains constant through all three states as their experiencer. This unchanging consciousness is who you ACTUALLY are. Vedānta teaches that you mistake your body and your mind for who you are because of avidyā. Often translated as “ignorance,” avidyā should not be taken as an insult—avidyā simply means lacking vidyā (knowledge) of your true self as the ātmā, the avasthā traya sākṣī. This avidyā, which we are all born with, is the root cause of the ātmā remaining in saṃsāra (the repeated cycle of birth and death). There are contexts in which you’ll be optimistic. Leave all those labels alone. It’s better just to look at the problem at hand. Look at reality the way it is. Try to take yourself out of the equation, in a sense. Obviously you’re involved. But motivated reasoning is the worst kind of reasoning. You’re not going to find truth through highly motivated reasoning. You have to be objective. And objective means trying to take yourself out of it as much as possible, or at least your personality out of it as much as possible. And so to the extent you run with this thick identity and personality, it’s going to cloud your judgment. It’s going to try and lock you into the past. If you say, ‘I’m a depressed, unhappy person—I’m going to be unhappy.’ That’s a way of locking yourself into your past. Even saying, ‘I have trauma, I have PTSD,’ yeah, you feel something—there are memories, there are flashes, there are occasional bad feelings. But don’t define yourself by it because then you’ll lock it into your identity and you’re just going to loop on it. It’s better to stay flexible because reality is always changing and you have to be able to adapt to it. Adaptation is also intelligence, adaptation is survival. Adaptation is kind of how you’re here. You’re here because you’re an adapter and your ancestors were adapters. So to adapt you’ll have to see things clearly and if you’re seeing them through your own identity, it’s going to cloud your judgment.”

This is a sweet video... I like to tell people that your family is not your fate. You’re not doomed to become your parents or to live exactly as you lived in your own childhood. If you came from a broken home, full of anger, constant arguing, and disorder, you don’t have to repeat that. You can escape it. But, almost paradoxically, you don’t escape it by obsessing over how you were wronged in your childhood. That usually pulls you right back into it. That’s why so many men who swear they’ll never become their fathers end up doing exactly that. You escape it by being future-focused for the good of others. You escape it by building something that blesses people beyond yourself, in your community, in your church, and especially in your family. You can be the link in a new chain. You will find it very hard to positively improve your life if you continue to do this. They perpetuate negative circumstances by talking about them as if they are current. You may have experienced something in the past, but referring to it and giving it attention and energy is only strengthening it. Do away with the idea that you must be "logical" and "normal" with how you talk and live. Instead, put your mind and energy into the reality you wish to experience, and your life will begin to align around that.
