ColecoVision was three times more powerful than Atari 2600 and Intellivision. The games actually looked like they did in the arcades. Sadly the video game crash of 1983, and their computer Adam, killed the system.

I got the Colecovision at age 10 in 1982 and still own it and its add ons

ColecoVision ruled.

I had an Adam. It was awesome (well, the printer was really loud).

The cassette tapes instead of floppy disk, was a bad idea, because the tapes get getting chewed up

I don't recall the reason for that choice. Did it have more memory at the time? Faster? Cheaper? I was able to copy cartridges to the tape - that was cool. But I suppose it could have been a disc just as easily.

Coleco was the first system our parents bought us. It was great.

Each game forced you to watch the logo for 30 seconds. Every damn time. I hate that system .

True but they were showing off just how great they were compared to the others at the time

Many think of Coleco as a Japanese company, but it was USA. HQ was in Connecticut. They were killing it with Cabbage Patch and ColecoVision and would have survived the giant downtrend in home video games but lost it all on the Adam Home Computer.

The Coleco version of the Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator was pretty great, considering it was trying to basically emulate vector graphics .. it did look quite a lot like the vector arcade game - very playable and fun.

It was seeing Donkey Kong on the Colecovision that made my family move on from the Atari VCS/2600. Games like Dig Dug, Ms PacMan and Jungle Hunt were great on the Atari, but DK on Coleco was just amazing.

Owned all you mentioned at the time, as well as the Bally Astrocade, and a Commodore 64. The Astrocade was, hands down, the best gaming platform. Followed by the 64. You haven’t lived until you’ve played Wizard Of Wor in team mode on an Astrocade. ColecoVision was good.

in Jr. High a girl had ColecoVision and lived in the high end Condo Complex, so we would skip school and three of us guys would hang out with her and play her ColecoVision all day long. Looking back I think there was potentially more things to do but that console was sweet.

I knew a lot of people that wanted a Coleco, but very few had them. Lots of reasons, but a big one is that everyone had already bought an Atari or an Intellevision - plus games - and nobody's parents were going to buy another system and more games for that system.

The Atari Video Computer System [2600] was released in 1977. The Mattel Intellivision was released in 1979. The Colecovision was not more powerful than the Atari 5200… both released in 1982. Although it was $100 cheaper.

From what I understand, the 5200 just didn't have as many of the games people wanted

That’s marketing & revisionism 2 explain OG Atari’s fall & later justification of Nintendo’s monopoly. Coleco nabbed obscure titles & claimed they were fresh. Atari had hits. It’s like saying Ms Pac-Man was tired when it was still a best seller yrs later on the NES & the Genesis

Well I have seen the 2600 Pac-Man and it looked horrible, and it was produced by colico which isn't that much of a shock

2600 Pac-Man was done by Atari. Ms Pac-Man & Jr Pac-Man on the 2600 - also done by Atari - are so much better. That’s not counting modern homebrew versions or stepping up to the 5200 or the 7800.

Kaliko was the pretty girl at school that everyone wanted, but we just ended up dating Atari😆

The boxing game with the stick controller was the shit

And now they are 10 times more than Ataris on eBay.

@jcsjrdesigns Like every other early 8-bit home system, these were NOT identical to the arcade games. Those were not arcade roms/arcade boards inside the home consoles. They were VERSIONS of arcade games. Until the NeoGeo, there was no such thing as "arcade perfect".

Ladybug 🥰🥰

My dad bought me the Adam. Loved it.

It was not, in fact, the only system I ever needed.

My favorite game console growing up. I still have it all, and have newer games and the super game module that opcode games released a few years back. Too bad the video game crash happened.

That was my first system, amazing and ahead of its time

"The games actually looked like they did in the arcades." Brother, what are you smoking?

Have you seen Atari 2600?

Wanted an Adam computer so very long ago but it was too expensive so my grandmother bought me a radio shack TRS-80 instead. For Christmas or Birthday I don't recall which

Loved the ColecoVision.

They did not look better than the arcade but they did blow away the Atari. But most people played Atari games in the coleco vision

Definitely not better but extremely close and the music and sounds too

There controller is what killed the system. It was complete crap.

Colecovision was a BEAST for arcade games. The problem was, not very good at anything else. (Aside from THOSE controllers) The opposite problem of the Intellivision (Sans the controllers)

I wanted a collecovision so much. Their Donkey Kong looked very close to the real game

My first game console. The only thing I didn’t like about it were the controllers which didn’t last up under heavy use. Thank goodness I never bought the Adam, way too much of a stretch to try and integrate a computer onto a game console.

War Games was my favorite game back when - wish it would get re-released

"The games actually looked like they did in the arcades." BUZZZZZZZZ I was there.. everything that wasn't in the arcade looked a whole lot worse. The advent of Mame multiple decades later changed that. Not even the 16 bit era was up to snuff.

They looked pretty damn close, especially the ones from the late seventies like ladybug

Let's just have objective reality take over.

While it was much improved from the 2600 it wasn't quite arcade hardware.

I opened up BurgerTime on Christmas morning and was super excited to play!! Then, I realized... my mom bought a ColecoVision game, and not a 2600 game... I tried so many times to get it to work... 🤣

SEGA basically copied the ColecoVision and brought it out as the Master System
