From Wall St to the City of London - our finance, insurance and banking systems are built on chattel slavery. Even the concept of the modern corporation was based on this exploitation. But it didn’t stop with abolition in 1833. According to a paper published in New Political Economy, the Global South has lost $152 trillion in wealth to the Global North since 1960 alone. Extracted, in part, by the same institutions. These are the very same entities that now dump sewage in our water, make profit from the care of our elderly and price gouge the public on everything from energy to food. Reparatory justice is a class issue. It affects all of us and rebuilding something better starts… with an apology.

I would like to congratulate my dear friend and fellow at the African Leadership Institute, Lerato Mataboge, for being elected to lead the infrastructure and energy portfolio at the African Union. As the new Commissioner for Infrastructure and Energy of the African Union Commission, Lerato will be responsible for one of the most important talking points in Africa that will help propel the continent towards closing the wide gap between itself and other continents. Lerato is a highly intelligent individual who has served as the Deputy Director of Trade for the South African government. South Africa’s loss is truly Africa’s gain, as the continent needs experienced yet youthful bureaucrats chosen for their competence, not through political deals. Africa’s transportation infrastructure is underdeveloped, with only about 53% of roads paved, compared to higher percentages in other developing regions. This inadequacy increases intra-African trade costs by approximately 30–40% making goods more expensive. Africa is struggling with digital infrastructure, with only 0.6 fixed broadband subscriptions per 100 people, compared to 2.1 in South Asia and 10.6 in the Middle East and North Africa. Electing a South African to this important position makes a lot of sense because it is the continental leader in this area and Lerato’s wide network in the areas of economics, trade, banking and other related financial institutions will certainly come in hand. Congratulations to her and thank you to the South African government and its people for sending such a highly qualified leader to the African Union, and congratulations to Africa as a continent!

When Insurance Was Worth More Than Black Lives One day in 1781, a slave ship's crew threw over 100 Africans overboard to a watery death in the Atlantic Ocean, not by accident, but because British law allowed it, insurance covered it and 143 Africans deaths was an acceptable investment into an insurance scam. The Zong massacre may have taken place over 240 years ago in 1781, but it remains a clear reflection of how the Global North has always valued African lives both historically and to date. As with so many other cases where African lives were wasted for the sake of completely unbridled European greed, recognition of the crime has never been formally established, and no compensation has been given to the African communities on both sides of the Atlantic that were the victims of this crime. The Global North has always placed a relatively low price on the bodies and blood of Africans - a price that has been paid millions of times to feed its imperial economy and build its infrastructure. It still does the same today through the mechanics of neo-colonialism, which enables it to continue taking from Africa to maintain its hegemonic global position. Africa needs to open its eyes to the fact that the imperial Global North has never changed and it remains the real ultimate enemy of African progress.

This is the question posed by Fadhel Kaboub (Fadhel Kaboub فاضل قابوب on X), an associate professor of economics at Ohio's Denison University, who critiques global financial institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. Despite their inclusive names, these institutions act as neo-colonial tools, deepening poverty and dependency in Africa and the Global South. After decades of so-called ‘aid,’ little progress has been made in Africa, while Western countries advance by exploiting its resources. For example, the foreign-backed proxy war over natural resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has lasted over 30 years. This is agenda of the west to isolate south Africa from African countries and destabilize the economy then south Africa is going back to the hands of white people in the nameof rescuing the economy because the white know if they distracte south Africa the unity of Africa it will shake so they are using those groups. He emphasised that cloud computing and artificial intelligence will power the economies of the 21st century, presenting South Africa and the continent with an opportunity to lead in innovation rather than simply adopt technologies developed elsewhere. The President said by investing in digital infrastructure, skills and innovation, South Africa is laying the foundation for economic growth, job creation and a more competitive digital economy that benefits all its people.

Over the weekend, I spoke at the Arc Community Meetup in Enugu about how stablecoins can support African businesses. The challenge isn’t awareness. Many founders already see the speed and cost benefits of stablecoins. The real issue is infrastructure that still treats Africa as an afterthought, with high fees, poor liquidity, and compliance designed for other markets. Arc is addressing that gap with payments infrastructure built to transfer value across borders without the friction African businesses have faced for years. Professor PLO Lumumba has warned that while colonial powers are once again seeking to divide Africa in order to conquer it through a new scramble for the continent, such tactics can no longer serve as an excuse for Africa’s inaction. He insists that Africa must recognize its collective strength in negotiating with the West and the European Union as a united front. The continent must reject bilateral engagements with individual foreign powers and instead demand that all strategic partnerships, particularly in the realms of military, energy, manufacturing, technology, artificial intelligence, and textiles, be conducted at the level of the African Union. This, he argues, is the path to genuine anti-colonial and anti-imperialist sovereignty.

Australia needs to rebuild not just its refining and energy infrastructure but its entire economy. That’s starts with throwing out the neoliberal ideology of let the market rip that destroyed our prosperity and replacing it with an Australian First mentality. This is Jacob Zuma, the former President of South Africa, whose political party, MK, has been encouraging South Africans to chase not only undocumented immigrants out of the country, but even black Africans who are legally living and working in South Africa. His campaign vehicles have been driving around KwaZulu-Natal with loudspeakers urging people to drive black Africans out of the country, regardless of whether they are in South Africa legally or not. And then, after all of that, he flew to India to meet the Gupta family, the very people accused of helping to orchestrate the industrial-scale corruption that nearly bankrupted South Africa through state capture. When they faced accountability, they ran away from South Africa, first for Dubai and then for India. Think about the contradiction. A man whose campaign encourages hostility towards fellow Africans is, at the same time, embracing foreign friends who became synonymous with one of the biggest corruption scandals in South African history. By his own admission in this video, he has made it clear that he is unhappy with the direction the country took in pursuing those implicated in state capture. Meanwhile, ordinary black South Africans are being mobilised against fellow black Africans who are living in South Africa legally, while the political battle being fought is, in reality, about power, accountability and the legacy of state capture. They are being drawn into a campaign that serves political interests rather than addressing the country’s real challenges. History should record this moment. It should record the irony of fellow Africans being turned against one another while those accused of presiding over one of the darkest chapters of corruption in South Africa seek a return to political power. That is a tragedy that future generations should never forget. Imagine dehumanising fellow black Africans who look like you, speak languages like yours, and share the same continent, all so that Jacob Zuma’s Indian friends can return and loot South Africa again.

‼️A great injustice is being conducted against the world's poorest people. ‼️ While developed countries in the Global North continue to expand fossil fuel use for their own citizens, these same governments, often backed by NGOs, pressure global development banks to withhold financing from Global South countries for projects that would provide access to clean cooking fuels like LPG. At the heart of this campaign is a critique of what we call "carbon colonialism": a new form of climate injustice in which the poorest are asked to sacrifice the most, while the richest continue to expand the very emissions infrastructure they refuse to allow in Africa. There is no denying the urgency of decarbonisation. But if we do not distinguish between fossil fuels that lock in emissions for decades and those that offer a short-term bridge to health, dignity, and development, we risk deepening existing inequalities while doing nothing to save the planet.
