Simple Guide to Colonoscopy Screening 🔴For Most Healthy People (Average Risk) No family history of colon cancer, no symptoms, and no special inherited conditions. -Start regular screening at age 45. -The best test is a colonoscopy (a camera test inside the colon) done every 10 years — if the test is normal. -Other options like yearly stool tests (FIT) exist, but colonoscopy is preferred because it can find and remove small growths before they become cancer. -Continue screening until age 75 (if you are healthy and expected to live longer than 10 more years). -Between 76–85 years: Decide together with your doctor based on your overall health. 🔴If You Have Family History of Colon Cancer or Polyps "First-degree relative" means your parent, brother/sister or child. -One close family member had colon cancer or a risky polyp after age 60: Start screening at age 40. Colonoscopy every 5–10 years (ask your doctor). -One close family member had it before age 60, OR two or more close family members had it at any age: Start colonoscopy at age 40 (or 10 years before the youngest family member was diagnosed — whichever comes first). -Repeat the test every 5 years. 🔴If Your Family Has a Rare Inherited Condition (High Risk) These are uncommon but very important. Genetic testing and counseling are advised. -Lynch syndrome (inherited condition that greatly increases colon cancer risk): Start colonoscopy at age 20–25 (or earlier if someone in family got cancer very young). -Do it every 1–2 years for life. -FAP (Familial Adenomatous Polyposis) (rare condition with hundreds of polyps from young age): Start camera checks (sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy) at age 10–15 (around puberty). -Usually need surgery to remove the colon in late teens or early 20s because of very high cancer risk. -After surgery, regular checks of the remaining area every year. 🔴When to Get a Colonoscopy Even If You Are Younger -Do not wait for the screening age if you have these warning signs: Blood in stool or black stools Unexplained anemia (low blood count) Ongoing change in bowel habits (diarrhea or constipation) Unexplained weight loss or belly pain Family member diagnosed very young These need a diagnostic colonoscopy (not just routine screening). 🔴Important Things Everyone Should Know -Screening finds and removes polyps early — this can prevent cancer. -In many countries there is no free nationwide screening program. Decisions are based on your personal and family risk. High-risk people should follow the same rules as above. -Always talk to your doctor. They will consider your full health, family history, and what tests are available near you. -Bowel preparation (cleaning the colon) is needed before colonoscopy — it is the most uncomfortable part for most people, but the test itself is done with sedation. -This is general information only. Your doctor will give advice tailored to you.

A colonoscopy isn't just a test, it can prevent colorectal cancer by detecting and removing precancerous polyps before they become cancer. Early screening saves lives.

@semeonfrank True.

The quality of the colonoscopy is only as good as the bowel prep.

Yes. Visualization is of utmost importance.

Exactly, sir !👍

The prep is inconvenient. Missing a cancer that’s still curable is far more inconvenient. Don’t ignore persistent bleeding, unexplained anemia, or a change in bowel habits just because you “feel too young.”

True.

Ive had 2 colonoscopies. The bowel prep is the worst bit. The rest is a breeze.

Like a vacuum cleaner, Doctor? Cleaning out the intestines.

Not cleaning. Bowel preparation is done already. The procedure is done to visualize the inside of colon.

This is good

Good one sir 👏

Thanks.

Well getting a tube shoved up my ass

A colonoscopy is the biggest money making scam of all time. Right up there with mammograms and dental cleanings. Let’s hear those comments from the fake doctors.

pakistan

Yeah perforate my intestines... GFY doc

The worst part is the prep.

Very interesting,Thanks for sharing

Honestly the prep is the part everyone complains about, but catching a polyp early is worth one extremely weird evening.

Olympus is the Beat State of the Art Endoscopy system

Here and everything is e

The barbaric prep routine!

So if I go through this elective optional procedure, have to go through the inconveniences of taking 2 days off of work, find transportation to and from the office, go through the awful bowel emptying prep, my insurance is going to pay everyone but me.
