Why is socialism so popular? A few reasons. One straightforward one is ignorance—we’re just not really taught that much about it. I sometimes half-jokingly say, and it’s a bit of hyperbole, that in American high schools you get 155 hours on Hitler, three minutes on Stalin, zero on Mao, and zero on Pol Pot. You might get a quick mention of Fidel Castro in the context of the Cold War, but that’s about it. You don’t really learn about the far-left tyrants who were responsible for tens of millions, maybe even upwards of 100 million deaths under communism. So that’s one reason: just complete ignorance. Another factor is that it’s difficult to understand, which may be part of why it isn’t taught. And then there’s the argument that many teachers themselves are ideologically sympathetic to socialism or communism, and so they don’t really want to dwell on how badly it went wrong.

Communism on the ballot in the United States of America. Think about how damn disgraceful that is. This country was built on individual liberty, private property, free enterprise, faith, and the right to control your own destiny. Communism stands against those principles at every turn. If you want to tear down the system that made America the greatest nation on Earth, don’t expect patriotic Americans to smile and call it progress. We should defeat this poisonous ideology everywhere it appears. America doesn’t need communism. Communism needs America to forget what it is.

“I never learned about the death toll from Stalin. I never learned about the death toll from Mao. I never learned about the death toll from Pol Pot.” YES. I have been trying to sound the alarm on how piss poor civics and history education is in this country. In my opinion, we don’t talk about this enough. I can’t recall a single lesson on socialism or communism in the entirety of my schooling, from start to finish. And I didn’t even go to government schools. And I’m sure it’s only gotten worse since I was in school. I don’t know how it used to be before my time, but my generation and younger didn’t get properly educated on this subject, and that’s at least partially to blame for the rise in socialism. I guarantee you your average American—especially under a certain age—can’t tell you why socialism and communism are bad. We learn about the horrors of Nazism, Hitler, and the Holocaust, but the rest of the education is sorely lacking.

It would require Texas schools to teach grades 4-12 about communism and its victims, in and outside the U.S. His story, and millions of others, must be taught to Texas kids to ensure America never falls to communism.

Just between the Anti-Rightist Campaign and the Cultural Revolution, one to two million were killed. And yet we were taught nothing. Pol Pot is another example. He killed about a quarter to a third of Cambodia’s population—roughly two million people—in just four years. And again, silence. Maybe some of you went to better schools than I did, but most people I talk to say they didn’t learn anything about Mao or Pol Pot either. As a kid, we read The Diary of Anne Frank. In high school, it was Schindler’s List or The Pianist on slow Fridays. I wasn’t even a great student, but I still remember all the lessons, books, and discussions about Hitler and the Nazis. You grow up knowing the worst thing you can be called is Hitler or a Nazi. And that’s fine—we should study Hitler. But we could also make room for the other brutal dictators, especially the ones on the far left. For some reason, that's barely mentioned.
