New: Another extortion-related shooting in Surrey: 2 arrested. 74 extortion cases in Surrey-39 involving shootings, as of Monday, Oct. 27. Shots were fired around 2 a.m. at a residence owned by a Surrey businessman near King George Blvd & Hwy 10. Several people were inside-fortunately, no one was injured. SPS located a suspect vehicle nearby, leading to the arrest of two men. Police say they were then transported to SPS cells pending further investigation. BC Extortion Task Force is now leading the investigation.

“The Texas House will be organized. We will be ready. And we stand willing and able to listen to the community and experts to do all that we can.” That was my message today as I joined Governor Greg Abbott and emergency response officials in Kerrville for a briefing and aerial tour of the areas impacted by the recent devastating flooding. While there is a long road to recovery ahead, the State of Texas will continue to provide the support and resources needed for these communities to recover and for every missing person to be found. All of Texas continues to hold the Texans who lost their lives and those impacted by this tragedy in our hearts and in our prayers.

When she asked, “Why aren’t South Africans fighting against white foreigners as well?” I was genuinely annoyed because it completely misses the point. White South Africans or foreigners generally aren’t competing with illegal migrants for limited public resources. Most don’t live in townships or informal settlements where the pressure on public clinics, schools and low skilled jobs is felt most. Poor black South Africans do. That’s why this issue is experienced differently. It’s not about race. It’s about who is directly affected by the competition for already stretched public resources. People who live side by side with illegal migrants and rely on the same public services are naturally going to have different concerns from those who don’t. Their experiences deserve to be acknowledged, not reduced to accusations of xenophobia. I don’t know why she and everyone including the government and politicians don’t get it. I’m not directly affected by illegal immigrants but I can’t dismiss the lived experiences of people who are affected by them.

Watching Fran talk about her home in Altadena broke me. The enormity of the loss in the LA area is hard to comprehend and is ongoing as the fires continue to expand and new ones pop up. For people who either don’t live in LA or have never lived in LA, there’s this idea that everyone impacted by the fires is wealthy and doesn’t need support. Nothing could be further from the truth. While there are some very wealthy people who have lost their homes—people who have the resources to rebuild—there are so many people who have been impacted by the fires who desperately need support. People in communities like Altadena, where fires have ravaged so many homes, are, for the most part, not wealthy. Many of them have lived in their homes for decades and bought them when Altadena was a much more affordable community. There are also many renters who have been impacted by the fires. And this doesn’t even address all of the hourly workers who have lost customers and clients now that so many houses have burned down. I have linked to two GoFundMe pages below. The first is the GoFundMe Foundation’s fundraiser, which will provide grants to people in need. Since the money is going to the foundation, your donations are tax-deductible. ICE and CBP officers are some of the most dedicated men and women in law enforcement in the U.S. They deserve the support of state and local officials — not harassment for keeping our communities safe. What happened in Minnesota is a tragedy but we should be careful to rush to judgment. There should be a detailed investigation. I’m confident that there will be and that there will be answers.
