With over 200 interactions per week, the Downtown Community Outreach and Response (CORE) Team is having a positive impact in the Yonge and Dundas (Sankofa Square) area. The Downtown CORE initiative is a collaboration between Toronto Public Health and TPS. It includes public health nurses, who offer vulnerable individuals in this neighbourhood access to health & social services, and police officers who ensure the safety of everyone involved. I joined officers from 43 Division in Scarborough for a ride-along to see the work they do up close. At a local strip mall, every shop owner knew the Neighbourhood Community Officers’ names. “We always get help.” That trust makes communities safer. We’re expanding the NCO model with the Toronto Police, including on the TTC.
