Compiler Racing! How fast can YOU build and link the entire Linux kernel? The Contender: 9995WX 192 Core Threadripper OEM! The Champion: 7995WX 192 Core Threadripper Custom

Isn't displaying on screen all those lines interfering with the speed?

On Threadrippers, NUMA and DRAM settings can impact inter-core communication significantly (e.g., every cache miss costing tens to hundreds of cycles). OEMs are expected to strongly prioritize compatibility over performance, in order to achieve ISV qualification. A properly tuned/OC'd 9995WX should deliver 15–40% more performance... but at the cost of the CPU alone drawing almost 1kW!

1 minute 32.12 seconds. But only 16 cores.

You can do better 😁

Remember leaving it overnight and praying for no errors in the morning?

What's the overclock on the 7995WX? Wouldn't mind seeing this benchmark run on both cpu's but clocked at the same speed and such, so you can see the performance gains more clearly between generations.

Ok, this was fast. Built Linux kernel last time in 90s (Slackware, minimized to 150KB something) - still, was like 30 minutes build or so, on i486.

was the 9995 supposed to win?

Are they throttled at all by the output statements? I was compiling COBOL in a dos window that would be way faster if I minimized the window. That was mid 90s.

What I wanna know about the Plummer lab is...how big is the power bill. Yikes the PSU you need for the 9995WX….

I'm really curious to see GCC vs clang build times on that many cores. Could you run the test with clang too?

I used to race WinPE image bootup times, after stripping mine of all international support

Just about added transputer t805 support to tinycc and the 6.12 kernel patched and booted 😂 wonder where the transputer would sit on your kernel speed times?

hey that's unfair! My system just has 16/32 core/threads
custom how?

give us the watts consumed please

lol running them on the same machine is hardly fair!

MOAR

Wow, quite a difference!

I do a RAMdisk and kill this bench

back then it took 22s to download a kernel

omg i remenber compiling the kernel i start the process went to work for 12h and get back to wait like 2 or 3 more hours...this takes seconds i want one!!!

I remember the days of leaving it compiling over night.

192 Cores!! Does this get the SSD to 100% utilisation? I was amazed compiling boost when I first overclocked my 16 core AMD… and it still only got the SSD (980 Pro) to about 20% 🤣

I don't know if it's still the case with AMD, but when I did overclocking tests, performance per Watt dropped, so it was actually more efficient to let the CPU run stock clock than overclock, as the CPU "work" used up fewer Watts despite running longer...

Ok,- impressive. It took me 20 secs to compile a small linux kernel which has just a bunch of things I need. Hmmmm 🤔

Ah the good old days of running forever on a pentium
