The book uses 5 phototransistors (light sensors) wired to an ATmega328PB microcontroller’s ADC pins. Pages have unique hole patterns/cutouts; as you turn pages, different sensor combinations detect ambient light, letting the MCU instantly identify the open page. It then applies that page’s exact logic to the two buttons → LED (XOR = exclusive OR; LATCH = set/reset flip-flop). The MCU polls sensors + buttons every ~15 ms for real-time response when flipping pages. Clever low-power board-book engineering!
