The clip below is a historically accurate recreation of one of the most grueling aspects of China’s early nuclear program. This scene takes place at the Lop Nur nuclear test base in the Gobi Desert. The soldiers are engaged in an ancient, traditional Chinese construction technique known as manual earth ramming (人工打夯 - réngōng dǎ hāng). The loose, shifting sand of the Gobi is incredibly unstable. To prevent heavy structures from settling, tilting, or collapsing, the earth must be violently compacted. This technique was vital for securing the foundation of the massive, 100-meter-tall Ground Zero steel tower used to detonate China's first atomic bomb. Additionally, such backbreaking labor was used widely across the Lop Nur base to physically pound the desert flat for building barracks, paved roads, and other essential testing facilities. The tool the men are using is a multi-person collaborative wooden rammer. According to historical construction records, these traditional rammers were made of dense hardwood and typically weighed between 40 to 50 kilograms (about 90 to 110 pounds). Operating one required a tightly coordinated team of 10 to 12 men. To manage the immense friction and prevent horrific blisters, workers often used braided hemp ropes with knots tied every 20 centimeters, allowing for a better, safer grip as they hoisted the heavy weight into the air over and over again. For American audiences, it might seem jarring to see a nation developing a highly advanced thermonuclear weapon while seemingly lacking basic construction equipment like bulldozers or steamrollers. In the late 1950s, the Soviet Union abruptly withdrew its technical experts and heavy machinery from China. While China was gradually restoring parts of its national industrial base leading up to the first successful nuclear detonation in 1964, the remote, unforgiving environment of the Gobi Desert meant that base construction still relied overwhelmingly on raw human muscle. The military had to deploy ancient, agrarian folk techniques to engineer the foundations for a modern Cold War weapon. In this video clip, the commander stands above the men, waving a red flag and yelling a rhythmic chant: "Com’on Comrades!" to which the men heave the ropes and reply, "Heave-ho!" This was a critical safety and synchronization mechanism known as a ramming chant (夯歌;hānggē). Dropping a 100-pound block of wood effectively requires the rammer to fall perfectly vertically. If just one of the ten men pulls too weakly, or releases a fraction of a second too late, the rammer will tilt. A tilted rammer fails to compact the soil properly, exhausts the men trying to balance it, and, most dangerously, could easily crush workers' feet. The commander acting as the "lead chanter" serves as a human metronome. The tempo of his chant dictates the work. The rhythm of his chanting needs to ensure that every single man exerts the exact same amount of force at the exact same millisecond.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 America wants reactors on cargo ships again. MARAD signed a deal with Core Power to open a path for U.S.-flagged nuclear merchant ships, so construction could start in 2028. That date is a target, but the lure is obvious: Today’s boxships haul thousands of tons of bunker fuel just to crawl across an ocean. Swap the tanks for a reactor and you get years of range, extra cargo space, and a ship that does not have to sip diesel like a miser. The catch is just as obvious: One design in play is a molten-salt reactor that has never gone critical anywhere. Idaho is prepping a short test around 2028. A lab experiment is not a propulsion plant in a North Atlantic storm, but the fallback is older and faster: drop a light-water SMR into a hull built in Japan or Korea, then do the nuclear work in a U.S. yard that still has to be built. This has been done before though, NS Savannah put to sea in 1962. The reactor worked, but the business did not. Cheap oil, extra crew costs, and ports that did not want the ship killed it by 1971. Germany and Japan hit the same wall, and almost every civilian nuclear freighter ended as a beautiful dead end. So why touch it now? China already builds the world’s ships and is pushing nuclear cargo of its own. If this works, America gets vessels that do not beg the fuel market for permission to move. If it fails, it will fail in the boring places: insurance, port access, licensing, and a $700 million ship trying to beat a $250 million diesel workhorse. I found myself with a front-row seat. I realized I had something few people have… access. And with that access came a responsibility to document this story as it unfolds. Over the past eight months, our documentary crew has gone inside laboratories, construction sites, control rooms, government offices, and startup headquarters. We watched brilliant people wrestle with impossible engineering problems, politics, tight deadlines and tons of uncertainty. At first I thought we were making a documentary about nuclear, but I was wrong. Nuclear is just the lens. The real story is something much bigger. Evolution says you can turn anything into anything if you tweak it long enough. But that house of cards collapses immediately when you realize what it takes to make even a single cell. They say new cell types arise one mutation at a time. Is that plausible? Here is the issue: Different cell types are created through a massive coordinated stack of genetic information, and it's not all just about DNA sequences. First you need a whole suite of new genetic systems related to the cell: new genes for the cell’s internal systems, instructions for its specific functional role in the body, the regulators that coordinate everything, markers to tell them where to go and when, and the controls that keep the wrong programs off. But the DNA structure itself must also be manipulated. You see, every cell in your body contains the DNA instructions to make any other cell. So how does a bone cell become a bone cell instead of a skin cell? Because of how the DNA is folded. DNA is folded in certain ways for different cell types, so that only the "bone cell instructions" are able to be read by the "cell construction program." The DNA fold decides which programs are open for each cell type. This is critical. If DNA is not folded properly so that specific cell-type information can be read, catastrophe ensues. Then you need placement blueprints, so the cells form in the right place, in the right number, and lock together to form a functional tissue. These developmental instructions are passed from parent to offspring - but research shows that tweaking these master developmental programs ends badly for the child. One mutation at a time cannot invent that entire programming stack and keep it coordinated. Research has confirmed this. To convert one cell type into another in the lab, researchers have to force many changes to happen at the same time in coordination. And even when directed by the researcher, cell conversion almost always fails. Change the sequence without the fold and you cannot get a new cell type. Fold the DNA without the new systems and you can only rearrange old programs. Make the cell without the map and it shows up in the wrong place. Break one layer in the stack and the others do not patiently wait - they fail. So creating a new cell type is not simply "tweak a gene one at a time." It requires a coordinated stack of entirely new programmed instructions: > New suite of internal systems, programmed into the DNA > New functional DNA fold so only the right systems are activated > New mapping blueprints so everything goes where it's needed Step-by-step mutation does not coordinate those layers. It produces broken cells before it produces new ones. Coordination of this level of complexity has only ever been known to come from one place: Intelligence.

I’ve been researching depth-residual routing & delta memory- Kimi K3 proved this holds at 2.8T params. But only for models trained this way I then asked: can you retrofit this onto existing LLM/world models? Introducing Retro-DARC: a Delta Attention Residual Compute adapter that retrofits depth-selective memory onto existing models without retraining: EA exact no-op at insertion (bitwise 0.0 deviation on 3 public checkpoints - proven exact even through MoE routing and early exit), adapter-only training, exact rollback, and content-level memory audits that weight-touching adapters can't express by construction. The early results are promising. A ~262K-param adapter beat LoRA on a frozen public checkpoint, inserted at zero behavioral risk. And it's the first memory you can audit: zero the bank and the frozen loss returns to machine precision; shuffle it and 70–107% of the gain vanishes. That's a model measurably using its own computation history. Retro-DARC is useful for improving K3 too. K3 serves in MXFP4/MXFP8, and layer outputs - exactly what its AttnRes retrieves - collapse under that corruption in my tests (0.04–0.75 top-1) while normalized delta keys hold 0.86–0.99. A Softmax1 null route with proven mass bounds lets the router decline to retrieve instead of forcing the sinks and outliers OASIS documented; typed memory turns "what is depth retrieval doing?" into a runnable audit. And one experiment is free: K3 already computes a per-step KDA update magnitude and throws it away - that's a depth-saliency prior waiting to be read. For world models, the same contract becomes one typed memory interface: Retro-DARC-X gives world/action planners a single bank - observations, actions, tools, latent causes, traces, physics residuals, failures - the substrates a planner needs to remember in order to act over long horizons in the physical world. The election of a charismatic democratic socialist as the Democratic Party’s mayoral candidate yesterday stunned New York's political establishment and appears to signal the most radical shift in city politics in a generation. With no executive experience, limited name recognition, and a fraction of the budget of his rival, a 33-year-old State Assemblyman named Zohran Mamdani defeated former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo outright in the Democratic primary, winning 44 percent of the vote in the first round and avoiding a runoff entirely. Mamdani’s rise was powered by younger, progressive voters hungry for moral clarity and economic redistribution. Mamdani is a practicing Muslim and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. He is a true political star, radiating warmth and intelligence. Mamdani called for a citywide rent freeze, universal rent control, fare-free public transit, and city-run grocery stores — all without raising taxes on working- and middle-class New Yorkers. But if Mamdani wins the general election in November and implements his policies, their impact would be disastrous for the people of New York City, including the poor, the working class, and many of the young voters who carried him to victory. A citywide rent freeze and expanded rent control would choke new housing supply, discourage landlords from maintaining existing units, and entrench inequality by rewarding incumbency while locking out newcomers. The evidence is already stark: New York City's acknowledgment on February 8 that the latest Housing and Vacancy Survey (HVS), a study of housing conditions, shows the rental vacancy rate in early 2023 at 1.4 percent, the lowest in more than 50 years. This crisis emerged after the 2019 rent laws that Mamdani wants to expand. Berlin tried a similar approach in 2020; construction collapsed, black markets emerged, and rents ultimately surged when the courts overturned the law. Mamdani's plan to eliminate transit fares would exacerbate the Metropolitan Transit Authority's multibillion-dollar deficit and compromise service quality in a system already operating at capacity. His proposal for city-run grocery stores ignores Chicago’s failed attempt, where poor oversight led to spoiled food, inventory gaps, and unsustainable losses. And his pledge to slash the NYPD budget comes at a time when violent crime remains elevated, assaults on transit workers are rising, and 911 response times lag across the boroughs. Mamdani is raising legitimate concerns, including on affordability and the city’s poor treatment of the mentally ill. From 1968 to 2024, the full span of New York’s current rent stabilization system, rents went up 1,017 percent, while costs for all other measured goods rose 826 percent. Public transit in New York is expensive and unreliable, grocery prices are punishing, and far too many mentally ill New Yorkers are left untreated on the streets, cycling through shelters, jails, and emergency rooms. In April 2025, 108,464 people slept each night in NYC shelters, while the majority of unsheltered homeless individuals are people living with a mental illness or other severe health problems. Mamdani’s willingness to confront issues that the other candidates evaded made him a symbol of hope for voters who rightly feel abandoned. But Mamdani’s proposals would make each of those issues worse, not better. A citywide rent freeze and expanded rent control would drive down construction, accelerate building withdrawal, and deepen the housing shortage. Operating costs of buildings containing rent-stabilized apartments already increased by 6.3 percent between 2024 and 2025. His call for fare-free public transit ignores the experience of other cities where eliminating fares led to overcrowding, reduced reliability, and funding crises. His plan to establish city-run grocery stores fails to take into account operational challenges. On safety, Mamdani pledges to remove police from schools, public housing, and subways, even as violent crime remains above pre-pandemic levels. And on mental illness, his opposition to court-ordered treatmentwould leave people in psychosis on the streets, untreated and deteriorating. And the people those policies would most harm would be many of the very people Mamdani claims to care most about. It would be low-income renters who find themselves unable to move because no new units are being built. It would be transit-dependent workers in the outer boroughs who rely on reliable subway service but would be left waiting for overcrowded, underfunded trains. It would be families in food deserts who need access to affordable groceries, not government-run stores plagued by mismanagement and waste. It would be children in public schools, tenants in public housing, and straphangers who face rising violence and would see fewer officers on patrol. And it would be the mentally ill and addicts themselves in crisis who need an intervention, not just outreach, left to suffer on sidewalks and subway platforms in the name of autonomy. Why then did he win such a resounding victory, particularly from those voters under 40 years old? ... Detroit News Puff Piece Ignores Poisoned Dirt Piles at Northland The story fails to mention the environmental scandal unfolding in Southfield but does note that tenants will soon be living near dirt that's too hot to touch By Charlie LeDuff Charlie LeDuff Southfield — If the publisher of The Detroit News were to suddenly donate his salary to charity, he'd still be over-paid. Sir, it’s time to retire. Over the past few years, The News under his stewardship has honed a reputation as a lapdog for corporate and political interests. Now he has removed all doubt with The News’s latest journalistic atrocity. The above the fold headline in Tuesday’s paper (available your local gas station for $3.49) read: “Northland site redevelopment coming together in Southfield” Say what? The place won’t be opened for years… if ever. I used to be a columnist at The News, so I know they are familiar with my work. It’s no secret I've been working on a series of stories about the environmental scandal surrounding the redevelopment of the old Northland Mall site in the city of Southfield, a poisoning so big that it may rival the Flint water debacle. Some quick background: Southfield city leaders bought the site 10 years ago thinking they had the brains redevelop it. They did not. There are miles of subterranean tunnels on the site, and Mayor Ken Siver invited area contractors to dump their construction debris there to fill the tunnels. Siver claims the dirt was clean, though the city never tested it. But numerous contractors and city officials say otherwise. It all came to a head last year, after Michigan Enjoyer published a series of stories featuring whistleblowers who claimed that the new Northland developer—Contour Companies—had diverted the contaminated soil into Detroit’s demolition sites. Much of the “dirt” had come from freeway and sewer jobs. Tests conducted by the City of Detroit showed that the Southfield dirt is too toxic for human contact. It will cost tens of millions to clean up. Executives at Contour could not be reached. The corporate telephone line was not accepting messages today. Meanwhile, mountains of the stuff still sit at the Northland site blowing in the wind. This week, we filmed workers moving the mounds of it around the site, rearranging it like peas on a plate. They were dumping it right across the street from a hospital and a child daycare center. The scandal is so profound that in February the Detroit Police Organized Crime unit forwarded the case to the FBI. This is commonly known. Even the Detroit Free Press reported as much last week. But none of these facts appeared in the News’s story. Instead, The News wrote: “The site’s water tower was recently painted, and in the distance, crews were working near what is slated to become a previously announced boutique hotel.” The water tower was painted! Read that again: “…in the distance, crews were working near what is slated to become a previously announced boutique hotel.” What in the hell does that even mean? I explained all of this to the gas station clerk. Her eyes went wide. “Fake news,” she said. “That’s why no one buys it.” The News reporter was given a tour of a model showroom. She wrote that the place will start to fill up with residents “as early as” the end of the month. Did she try the water taps? Did she not notice the windows and walls were missing in the half-finished condominium bloc? In a neat case of synchronicity, I also happened to visit the place on Monday. The elevators weren’t operable. A guy named Johnny was laying grout in the lobby. We filmed it all, including a surly foreman who in turn was filming us. The publisher of The News has done the people no justice here. It was the same with Covid, Kornak, and Chrysler. The days of knee-pad journalism are over. Time to close up shop, sir.
