I like Neil a lot. When I was at Perimeter he was always interesting and kind. He definitely has an ego, but in the way that everyone at the absolute top of their field has an ego. Most importantly, he legitimately seemed like a good person.

Why doesn't he just say it is all about money now? That captures all the ailments. Money brings bureaucracy, which leads to standardized exams for quality control. Quality is defined by the crowds and encourages mediocrity. He also mentions grants and feeding the university.

I disagree: a) even first degrees include original work as part of Yr 3 requirement; b) how can anyone complete a PhD to the required standard without an experienced supervisor? c) junior Faculty often get reduced workloads; d) original proposals win grants. What am I missing?

a) there's original and original-paradigm shifting. in maths and theory, truly radical ideas often come from young researchers b) 'experienced' vs 'committed to a paradigm' c) maybe if lucky. but also pressure to publish/win grants etc d) not TOO original

I enjoyed this sit down, Neil Turok is one of my inspirations... "Nature's message is I am simple." I am, not from the establishment with unique solutions foundational questions. My An(1) theory, for instance, bootstrap the universe from literally 1. All of physics and reality!
