A 12 gauge shotgun is .729 caliber (18.5 mm). A 4 gauge shotgun is a 1.052 caliber (26.7 mm)..

Handle is a relative term... I'm sure I could shoot it once.. where I and/or the shot end up would be the real mystery.

Hell no… the thing is a single barrel for a reason. You can reload the shells with #2 gravel.

I worked for Winchester and we supplied 4 gauge rifle slugs. The "gun" was mounted on a tripod and the round fired into brick kilns to knock the clinker from the walls.

Never shot a 4 gauge. However, I shoot a .460 Weatherby for dangerous African game. Both weapons generate similar recoil; about 125 ft-lbs. A good recoil pad, a firm grip into the shoulder, and a forward lean make it manageable.

Considering most of these were built with mounting anchors in the stock to mount them onto boats, I am going to say no. 😂

What is even crazier is aren’t most punt guns all black powder? I wonder how many grains they load to make this much recoil.

Actually much better with a sawed off barrel.

"I want to introduce you to the 7 1/2", 4 gauge Water Fowl Widow Maker. On a Blue Bird Day, like today, Old WW'll reach on out there, and bring 'em on down." T.K. And Mike. RIP, T.K. Browning.

You can't see it in the camera angle, but there used to be a barn where he fired the 4 gauge at.

A 12 gauge puts down bears, why would anyone need a 4 gauge? Are you trying to hit the bear from the opposite side of an office building, through it?

Ithaca37fanboy's profile picture
Ithaca37fanboy10 months ago

Yes, because he is not holding it properly. He is holding it like a 12 gauge, and not bracing himself for the recoil. Making a mistake like that would feel like getting in a 30mph car accident. No joke. TGS Outdoors has a video on that, and they play with a true 4 Bore Shotgun.

We used an 8 gauge at the cement plant to clear build-ups off the inside of the kilns. That dang thing was rolled around on wheels like a WWI cannon and you had to chain it to the kiln before you fired it. AND, you fired it by pulling a cord, not a trigger.
