Cows or sweets?

When I was in school most of this local dialect was frowned upon.

It likely still is. The education system favours a standardised Welsh which is 1) hardly used in speech, and 2) just totally against the community spirit of what Welsh is and was always meant to be

My family are from Pontardawe and I often use their dialect (many Welsh speakers wonder what I’m saying). I’d use ‘tyffus’ for sweets. Other words include: Swimming = oifad Cake = teisen Cuppa = disgled Butterfly = iar bach yr haf It’s great to see someone celebrating dialect!

A good friend of mine is from that area. I’ve heard these phrases you mention a lot 👌👌

The new livestock market in Welshpool has ‘Da Byw’ on the gates, this has confused me for a very long time, until recently! Didn’t know it was a local word here in Sir Faldwyn!

Don’t hear it much but my mum calls sweets ‘minciag’ - she’s from sir Feirionydd

I would tend to just say losin.

Dw I yn dod o de Cymru roedd Ci cyntaf cael ei enwi Losin. Ac yr ail Mabli (meaning loveable)
