This vintage P-51 Mustang was sitting on the tarmac when the pilot fired up that big prop... You see this classic WWII fighter parked right there on the cracked asphalt, gray with the big white stars, pilot sitting in the cockpit, then boom the propeller starts spinning faster and faster while a guy pushes a red cart right past it. Tie Fighter (LucasArts, 1994) is the sequel to X-Wing which was released the year before. This time you join the Dark Side and blast away at rebel scum! The prequel was great, Tie Fighter was even better. The iconic sound effects of the laser get me everytime. Joining the imperial forces gives it a whole new vibe. Epic cutscenes, digitized speech, great space combat scenes, ships and weapon systems to choose from, countless missions - and ultimately not being such a bad guy after all, since you serve under Thrawn and not Vader... your job being mainly to keep the galaxy in order, fight lawless rebels and pirates. LucasArts was originally known for their adventure games, but with the release of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series, they left an impressive mark on the 90s space combat genre.

Getting that tattoo lasered on to your arm, epic. Hearing the original laser and blaster sounds, absolute nerd chills. Requiring not just a steady hand to gun down enemy fighters and capital ships, but also having to manage and toggle energy between weapons, engines, and shields, Tie Fighter had the perfect blend of epic battles, mission briefings and debriefings, and last but not least truly excellent cutscenes. Computer Gaming World, GameSpot, and IGN all inducted it into the Hall of Fame - for good reason. Tie Fighter was a masterclass from LucasArts and a real rival to the Wing Commander franchise.

Everyone seems to have fond memories of Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the N64. I sure do, I love it. It also gets incredibly difficult thanks to the on foot camera and platforming. They must have known they had a masterpiece with the Hoth level to start the game with it. Opening the game with a flight section in the era of X-Wing and TIE Fighter only to transition to Dash Rendar on foot with a blaster was brilliant. This wasn't just an arcade flyer, it wasn't just an action game. This is Shadows of the Empire baby. #StarWarsDay
