[Discrete Fourier Transform] by Hand ✍️ In signal processing, the Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT) is no doubt the most important method. But the math involved is extremely complex, literally, involving a summation over a complex number term e^(-iwt). I developed this exercise to demonstrate that underneath such complexity, DFT is just a series of matrix multiplications you can calculate by hand. ✍️ Once you see that, it should not surprise you that a deep neural network, which is also a series of matrix multiplications, with activation functions in-between, can learn to perform DFT to process and analyze signals so effectively. How does DFT work? [1] Given ↳ Signals A, B, and C in the 🟧 frequency domain: ◦ A = cos(w) + 2cos(2w) ◦ B = cos(w) + cos(3w) + cos(4w) ◦ C = -cos(2w) + cos(3w) ◦ Each signal is a weighed sum of four cosine waves at frequencies 1w, 2w, 3w, and 4w. ◦ We will apply Inverse DFT to convert the signals to time domain representations, and then demonstrate DFT can convert back to their original frequency domain representations. ↳ Signal X in the 🟩 time domain. X is sampled at 10 time points 1t, 2t, …, 10t: ◦ X = [-2.5, -1.8, 3, -0.7, -1.0, -0.7, 3, -1.8, -2.5, 5] ◦ Suppose X is also a weighted sum of the same four cosine waves, but we don’t already know their weights. We will apply DFT to discover them. [2] 🟧 Frequency Matrix (F) ↳ Write the coefficients of A, B, C as a matrix F. Each signal is a row. Each frequency is a column. ↳ A → [1, 2, 0, 0] ↳ B → [1, 0, 1, 1] ↳ C → [0, 1-, 1, 0] [3] Cosine → Discrete ↳ Sample from the continuous cosine waves at discrete time points 1t, 2t, 3t, to 10t. [4] Cosine Matrix (W) ↳ Write the samples as a matrix, Each frequency is a row. Each time point is a column. [5] Inverse DFT: 🟧 Frequency → 🟩 Time ↳ Multiply the frequency matrix F and the cosine matrix W. ↳ The meaning of this multiplication is to linearly combine the four cosine waves (rows in W) into time-domain signals (rows in T) using the weights specified in F. ↳ The result is matrix T, which are signals A, B, C converted to the time domain. Each signal is a row. Each time point is a column. [6] Transpose ↳ Transpose T, converting each signal’s time domain representation from a row to a column. [7] DFT: 🟩 Time → 🟧 Frequency ↳ Multiply the cosine matrix W with the transpose of matrix T. ↳ The purpose of this multiplication is to take a dot-product between each time-domain signal (columns in the transpose of T) and each cosine wave (rows in W), which has the effect of projecting the signal onto a cosine wave to determine how much they are correlated. Zero means not correlated at all. ↳ The result is an intermediate version of the “recovered” frequency matrix where each column corresponds to a signal and each row corresponds to a frequency. ↳ Compared to the original frequency matrix F, this intermediate matrix has non-zero weights in the correct places, but scaled up by a factor of 5 (n/2, n=10). For example, signal A, originally [1,2,0,0], is recovered at [5,10,0,0]. [8] Scale ↳ Multiply each value by 2/n = 1/5 to scale down the intermediate matrix to match the magnitude of the original frequency matrix F. [9] Transpose ↳ Transpose the recovered frequency matrix back to the same orientation of the original frequency matrix F. ↳ Like magic 🪄, the result is identical to the original F, which means DFT successfully recovered the frequency components of signals A, B, C. [10] Apply DFT to X: 🟩 Time → 🟧 Frequency ↳ Now that we have some confidence in DFT’s ability to recover frequency components, we apply DFT to X’s time-domain representation by multiplying W with X. ↳ The result is the an intermediate matrix. [11] Scale ↳ Similarly, we scale down by a factor of 5 to obtain the recovered frequency components of X (a column). [12] Transpose ↳ Similarly, we transpose the recovered column to row to match the orientation of the frequency matrix. ↳ Using the coefficients [0,0,3,2], we can write the equation of X as 3cos(3w) + 2cos(4w). Notes: I hope this by hand exercise helps you understand the essence of DFT. But there is more technical details, such as: • Sine: The complete DFT math also includes sine waves that follow a similar calculation process. • Phase: Here, we assume all the cosine waves are aligned at the origin, namely, phase is 0. If a phase p is added, for example, cos(w+p), we will need to calculate the sine component and use their ratio to figure out what p is. • Magnitude: If phase is not zero, the magnitude will need to be calculated by combining both cosine and sine terms.

There’s a reason Craig Breslow traded a Boston legend like Chris Sale for Vaughn Grissom. He believes in him. The upside is real. Grissom debuted at 21 y/o with Atlanta while skipping AAA. • He owned a career .287/.339/.407/.746 slash in 236 MLB PA prior to being traded • Career .312/.404/.463/.867 slash with a 134 wRC+ and 11.1% BB/14.4% K in the minors • Mashes LHP… career .289/.346/.381/.727 slash, 102 wRC+ in the majors • Called-up for Boston’s last 8 games: slashed .330/.370/.417/.787 with 2 XBH and a 117 wRC+… also had 2 three-hit games down the stretch • limits K and whiff rates, walks a good amount, & commands the zone… all things this team needs out of a RHH - in 2024 (AAA): 19.2% K, 15.2% BB ‼️ Let it be known, the Grissom people saw (or think they saw) last year isn’t the Grissom we will see next year. He joined a new team. Strained not one, but BOTH of him hamstrings. Didn’t have a full Spring Training. Then recovered, got the flu, and reportedly lost 10+ lbs. Recovered again, dominant AAA, and finished the year off strong in the majors. 2024 was hard for him, and despite the many struggles above, he proceeded to ball out. That’s a wild season. I’d love to land Alex Bregman, but Vaughn Grissom is a guy who should be penciled in at 2B for this club on Opening Day. People see -0.2 fWAR and a .190 AVG and scream “bust.” I see a 24 y/o kid with a chip on his shoulder and loads of potential ready to bounce back in the biggest way next year. I can’t wait to see what Vaughn Grissom can do in 2025.

Jesus Personally Taught St. Faustina How To Survive Spiritual Attacks… Here are 10 Instructions That Could Change Everything. 1. Trust Me completely → Distrust opens the soul to fear. Trust disarms it. Jesus repeatedly says that graces flow according to trust (Diary 1578) and that the soul that trusts Him is never lost (Diary 723). 2. Run to My Heart immediately in temptation → Do not dialogue with temptation. Refuge is victory. “When you are about to fall, run at once to My Heart” (Diary 1485). He warns not to engage temptation but to flee to Him immediately. 3. Reveal temptations in confession → Darkness loses power when brought into the light. “The priest is My representative… reveal your soul to him” (Diary 1725). Confession breaks the power of hidden struggles. 4. Do not be guided by feelings → Feelings change. The will chooses love. “Do not be guided by feeling, because it is not always in your power” (Diary 1760). Faithfulness is measured by the will, not emotion. 5. Practice humility and patience with yourself → Impatience weakens the soul. Humility strengthens it. “My daughter, know that you are what you are before Me… nothing more” (Diary 56). Jesus calls the soul to patience in weakness and growth (Diary 1488). 6. Accept suffering with love → United to Christ, suffering becomes redemptive. “You will save more souls through prayer and suffering than through activity” (Diary 1767). Suffering embraced in union with Him has real spiritual power. 7. Remain obedient to legitimate spiritual authority → Obedience protects against deception. “My will is that you should obey your confessor in everything” (Diary 639). Obedience is tied to safety in the spiritual life. 8. Avoid curiosity about the future → Trust God’s timing. Curiosity breeds anxiety. “Do not be curious about the future… I am your security” (Diary 293). He redirects the soul from curiosity to trust. 9. Reject discouragement immediately → Discouragement never comes from God. “Why are you afraid…? Do you not know that I am always with you?” (Diary 613). Jesus corrects discouragement with His presence and truth. 10. Fight with courage, knowing I am with you → Courage rooted in Christ causes fear to retreat “Do not fear… I am with you always” (Diary 586). “Fight like a knight… do not be discouraged” (Diary 450). 💬 Is your spiritual life built on discipline… or just motivation when you feel like it?

3 in 4 suicides in the UK are by men. Men are far less likely to ask for help , but more likely to suffer in silence. Bereaved fathers face significantly higher risks of PTSD, depression, and isolation. But we rarely talk about it. So I am. Grief doesn’t always look how you expect. It’s not just tears or funerals. Sometimes it’s silence. Sitting in the car for 20 minutes, unable to turn the key. Smiling through meetings when your heart feels like it’s collapsed. Waking in the night, dreaming they’re still here. But grief also lives in the everyday moments you don’t see - Seeing someone with a bald head in the supermarket and instantly reliving chemotherapy wards. Wanting to hug a stranger going through treatment and say, “I respect you. I feel for you.” Turning off adverts about cancer. Lowering the volume when the “C word” is mentioned on the radio. Avoiding social events because you just don’t have the energy to explain. As a dad, you’re taught to be strong. To hold it all together. But what if holding it together means never truly healing? Grief doesn’t make you weak. It makes you real. And sharing it might be the strongest thing you ever do. To anyone struggling whether you’ve lost someone or are supporting someone who has: You’re not alone. Please talk. Please reach out. You’re not supposed to carry this by yourself. #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MensMentalHealth #Grief #ChildLoss #ItsNeverYou #LinkedInVoices #LeadershipThroughAdversity #HughsLaw #MentalHealthMatters #SupportDads

Sorry if I did not answer many of you. I’ve never been a fan of the online eulogy. The immediate fallout is always about loved ones. And we should leave those closest be. And then I realised of course I was just incredibly upset, and a large digital outpouring is inevitable and testament to his character. My devastation came from having to watch it all unfold. From spending years trying to help and actually getting him close to a point where he almost had a normal life again - then being powerless to stop him doing things he should not have. Powerless in every sense as it also meant it sometimes not being my place to say anything. In the end watching some of the evil shits around enable the worst of it was too much for me, I had to step back it was too painful to watch. I told my mate who was filling in for me looking after him “ah I just need some space from it all, I’ll be back with him after Christmas” and then suddenly there was no Christmas. And it turned out no one was to blame, and I immediately looked to blame myself most of all, fearing the worst. But it was a simple accident in the end. A bolt out of the blue. So if you are ever estranged or overwhelmed by friends and family and think it will all be OK one day - DON’T put it off. Reach out now. Grab that person and hold them tight. There may not be a tomorrow. You might not be around to see them off. There may not be the grand luxury of time available you thought there was. He died in the arms of his beloved son, and that is a measure of comfort, if a passing can ever have any. He was my mentor, my friend and my glad burden. And there was nothing I would not do for him.

What an incredible first day and what a raptuous welcome from the city of Reggio Emilia🇮🇹❤️ When Catherine first entered the RF, Prince Philip told her: 'If you believe the attention is for you personally, you’re going to end up in trouble. The attention is for your role, what you do, what you’re supporting. It isn’t for you as an individual. You are not a celebrity. You are representing the Royal Family. That’s all. Don’t look at the camera. The Queen never looks at the camera. Never. Look at who you’re talking to. Look at what you’ve come to see.🔥 However there is a caveat here: People DO come to see Catherine. These people did not just come to see Royalty or the monarchy, they came to see Catherine. They came because they love HER and they came in crowds for HER❤️ And this is really what makes this woman so different: the screams of excitement as if she is a celebrity superstar, the adoration in Their eyes... this is not about the Monarchy but about Catherine. In that, the commoner the british press mocked and belittled; The one who was judged as "inconsequential" and "too shy" is the one who has transcended the RF to become an Icon in her own rights🔥 Whether she goes on a private visit or on an official visit, alone or accompanied; she is the ONE people are there to see. Well and so, look How far did Humility and grace get this Berkshire country girl...😏❤️ #PrincessofWales 📹 Max Foster
