On this day in 1961, Fidel Castro declared the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution for the first time. He delivered the speech in honor of seven Cuban personnel killed the previous day in a bombing attack by CIA-funded rebels targeting several airfields near Havana. The attack was a prelude to the Bay of Pigs invasion, which began the following day. Up until that point, the 26th of July Movement (M-26) had included a range of ideological currents, from nationalists to social democrats. The nationalization of industry, followed by this speech, marked a decisive socialist turn in the revolution—culminating in the creation of the Communist Party of Cuba in 1965.

"Cuba will remain an example of a revolution that does not surrender." Cuban president Miguel Díaz-Canel condemned imperialist efforts to sow chaos and division in the world, calling for the defense of multilateralism. Pointing to climate catastrophe, devastating regional wars, and rapidly expanding wealth inequality, Díaz-Canel stated, "The crisis of capitalism has reached its most acute point." Amid US attacks on his country, he once again asserted that the Cuban Revolution would not surrender. Díaz-Canel delivered the speech in Havana on Monday as part of the opening address to the First International Colloquium Fidel: Legacy and Future, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of the birth of Fidel Castro.

Don't be confused by the Tik Tokers who claim to speak on behalf of all Cubans. Cuba is in crisis. But not because of any “regime” imposed on the people from within. Cuba is in crisis because of the blockade imposed by the U.S., which tries to destroy the revolution and the spirit and commitment of the millions of Cuban people that remain in the country to defend it.

Cuba is a country that excels in the fields of medicine, healthcare, sustainable agriculture + education. The biggest challenge facing the people of #Cuba is the brutal #US blocade since the illegal Bay of Pigs invasion in 1961 - Will no one challenge the illegal US Sanctions...?

🚨 At CUNY’s Cuba Conference, DSA's Danny Valdes Says Cuba Dictatorship Question Is “Completely Irrelevant,” Mullin Says Activists Must “Defend the Cuban Revolution” Before Corinna Mullin jumped in, DSA organizer Danny Valdes dismissed the question of whether Cuba is a dictatorship as “completely irrelevant” to what is happening on the island. That line is revealing on its own. In a room full of activists eager to defend Cuba, even raising the nature of the regime itself was treated as beside the point. Then Mullin took it a step further, arguing that it is “a problem for us to separate out our support for the people versus the state,” praising the Cuban Revolution for having “expropriated the wealth of the expropriators,” and insisting that “we must in our messaging defend the Cuban revolution.” Valdes did not resist the escalation. He nodded along as Mullin argued that activists should openly defend the revolution itself.

I’m proud to join the Cuban-American community in Florida commemorating the 65th Anniversary of the Bay of Pigs operation, where members of Brigade 2506 bravely sacrificed their lives to fight for a free and prosperous Cuba. Especially in today’s Cuba, it’s important to not give up the fight. This anniversary serves as our reminder to NEVER stop fighting for a FREE CUBA 🇺🇸🇨🇺

"Cuba is willing to have a dialogue with the United States." At a press conference on Thursday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel told reporters his government is open to conversations with the U.S., but only under conditions of respect and equality. He also stated that Cuba will defend its sovereignty against the “plans for terrorist acts” currently being organized by the U.S., and that the country has not received fuel since December, when the naval blockade on Venezuela began.

Spot on, Mayor Francis Suarez. Cuba and Cuban exiles in America are the perfect case study in why capitalism works and communism fails: "The per capita income of Cubans is $5,000/year. Of course in the Cuban diaspora and the exile community in Miami is a community that is thriving... we are prospering in a capitalistic system while Cubans are living in the dark ages essentially."
