Development containers are awesome, especially when you can swap the hardware running your environment without changing a single thing. Apparently, I've been living under a rock because I didn't know about this. I recorded a 3-min video to show you Gitpod Flex running on my laptop. This takes less than 5 minutes to configure and run. Here is a quick summary: 1. One click to run any of my GitHub projects in a container, isolated from everything else. 2. I can use Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Cursor, or any other IDE that supports development containers. 3. I don't have to mess up with my computer anymore (or have 17 versions of Python installed) ← this alone is awesome! 4. I can spin up a runner in AWS with my dev container and have access to any hardware I want while developing. 5. I can configure one-click buttons to run services and tasks I need every day. 6. I can share the environment with anyone on my team. It supports multiple user profiles, custom system prompt, battery reading, hand-free mode… I even built a launcher for the device, with custom UI framework specifically for this embedded system. And a full iOS companion app to help with setting up wifi, API keys & setting synchronization. This was also the first time I used Claude Design. To my surprise, the output is pretty good! It does require a few iterations though. I used to work at 2 hardware startups and building the software for these devices used to take months. Now with AI, it takes just a couple of day for a pretty decent product. Are you interested in this? I may open source all the code if anyone wants to do the same.
