I took Steve Ruiz's advice & got an ESP32! So much fun for ~$55. I programmed it to display live stats from my online radio station, and use the built-in mic to transcribe and send messages in the station's chat :) Here's everything I bought & how it works: - Waveshare ESP32-S3 1.54" e-Paper AIoT board ($30) - Wi-Fi, mics, speaker, battery charging built in - 3.7V 500mAh LiPo ($10) - JST 1.25 connector adapters ($15 for 20) - ESP32-S3 polls my radio's API over Wi-Fi every 20s → renders a "broadcast console" UI on the 200×200 e-paper - Hold-to-talk: dual mics record → WAV upload → server transcribes w/ OpenAI → posts to the live chat via websocket, pinned as the station owner (API-key auth) - Backend is my Wasp app (React/Node/Prisma) on Railway over 3 tiny endpoints: /status, /chat, /voice-chat - Firmware: PlatformIO + Arduino, GxEPD2 for the display, Waveshare's ES8311 codec drivers for the mic - Runs on battery, fully standalone Built the whole thing in a morning w Claude Fable 5. server endpoints, firmware. Super Smash Bros. 64, running natively on iOS and iPadOS for the first time. Not an emulator. BrawlerPad is built on BattleShip, which already supplied the SSB64 source-port core, Apple Metal path, and SDL controller/audio stack. BattleShip ran on Apple Silicon macOS and Android. There had never been a public iOS or iPadOS port. Now there is. The game logic is compiled into a native ARM64 app and runs through BattleShip/libultraship’s Metal/Fast3D path. No N64 hardware is simulated, and no ROM is interpreted at runtime. Smash deserves a controller, so BrawlerPad supports physical controllers through the same input path as the game. Touch works too. Development containers are awesome, especially when you can swap the hardware running your environment without changing a single thing. Apparently, I've been living under a rock because I didn't know about this. I recorded a 3-min video to show you Gitpod Flex running on my laptop. This takes less than 5 minutes to configure and run. Here is a quick summary: 1. One click to run any of my GitHub projects in a container, isolated from everything else. 2. I can use Visual Studio Code, JetBrains, Cursor, or any other IDE that supports development containers. 3. I don't have to mess up with my computer anymore (or have 17 versions of Python installed) ← this alone is awesome! 4. I can spin up a runner in AWS with my dev container and have access to any hardware I want while developing. 5. I can configure one-click buttons to run services and tasks I need every day. 6. I can share the environment with anyone on my team. I left this for the end, but I know this is one of the most important features of Gitpod Flex: They built a zero-trust architecture to manage these development environments. This is huge for those working at companies where security is crucial. Below is the link with an explanation of how they built their architecture.
