Little Daba and Maxwell, sharing a morning hello! Maxwell is the most popular member of our Nursery herd. Because he is blind – the result of a congenital eye condition – he has a forever home with us and his own spacious boma to lord over. (Black rhinos are solitary by nature and very territorial.) But with that said, Max has appointed visiting hours. When he hears the elephants mobilising in the morning, he waits by his gate to receive them as they head into the forest. Very often, there is a queue waiting to have their moment with the black rhino. On this particular day, lucky little Daba got the first slot! Meet Max and support him through an adoption:

He doesn’t join the orphaned elephants out in the forest for a number of reasons — black rhinos are very territorial by nature, and because Max is blind, he has his own, expansive stockade to call home — but visitors are always welcome at his door. In the heart of the Nairobi Nursery, a touching friendship blossoms between Taroha, our gentle elephant calf, and Maxwell, our resident blind rhino. Taroha often visits Maxwell’s enclosure, extending his trunk in a tender greeting, while Maxwell responds with soft snorts & squeaks, acknowledging his fellow pachyderm friend. These interspecies interactions highlight the profound connections that can form in the animal kingdom, reminding us of the universal language of companionship. Today marks three years since Taroha arrived in our care – by way of a JCB bucket. And as you can see, he's blossomed into our Nairobi Nursery's eldest bull with the politest, most calm character. Here's a wonderful little moment to demonstrate: back in 2025, he made a point of stopping by blind black rhino Maxwell's stockade every morning to say hello. Our blind rhino has lived at the Nursery for over 20 years, and over time, many orphans have formed their own special routines with him. Taroha was no exception. Discover his rescue story in full:

When a new orphan arrives, our ex-orphans come home. In September 2022, we made an unusual call: we sent our newest rescue – a two-year-old orphan of drought – straight to our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit, bypassing the Nursery. Daylight was running out, Umani was close to his place of reintegration, and we thought the older orphans would be a good fit for him. Our ex-orphan Lima Lima had been away in the forest for three days, yet somehow she still knew... the day Kapei arrived, she walked straight up to his stockade and demanded the Keepers let her in. She spent hours with him, sharing his lucerne, before slipping back out. That formative moment set the tone for Kapei's recovery – from then on, he always knew he had a herd behind him. More recently, he has started to join them in the wild too, spending multiple days away from his Keepers at a time. By adopting, you can welcome an orphaned elephant, rhino or giraffe into your heart, and help fund the milk and Keeper care they need to return to the wild:

From fragile to flourishing — it’s hard to believe how far Toto has come. When he was rescued - brought to us in Ithumba by some of our ex-orphans! - Toto was frightened and alone. He arrived at our Kaluku Neonate Nursery in poor condition, requiring round-the-clock care, but even then with a big personality! Today, he’s one of the most steady and nurturing elephants in our little Kaluku herd — with a big soft spot for his pseudo elephant sister 'Korbessa'. This #TransformationTuesday, we celebrate Toto’s journey and the incredible support that helped make it possible. Be part of his story:

When he hears his specialist formula milk being prepared outside, he stretches his trunk up to his Keeper's bunk bed and snatches the blanket right off the sleeping man. If this is not effective, he moves on to Plan B. Somehow – a skill most elephants of his age have not yet mastered – he balances on his hind legs and plonks his front legs on the edge of the bed, waking his Keeper with a trunk kiss. Synchronised... drinking? In the dry season, our water troughs become the water cooler of the office: everyone stops by for a refreshment and a chit chat. Sometimes it's the orphans idling, other times it's our ex-orphans or wild elephants coming to visit, knowing we offer a sanctuary and a safe haven. Can you tell who's who? Our Keepers can, just by looking for ear notches, tusk shape, and forehead shape – but even that takes years of walking with an orphan by day and sleeping near them at night, until identifying them becomes second nature. Take a guess in the comments – orphan, ex-orphan, or wild visitor?

Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza brought his trophy to visit Dominican priests on Christmas Eve. "What a generous gift," Father Patrick Hyde told WISH-TV in Indianapolis. "We don’t always get to share the glories of other people because we prepare them and send them out. But to be a little part of his success, and for him to go out of his way, was a great gift for us priests." "The opportunity Fernando has had to share his faith in simple ways through his platform has been a blessing," Hyde added to the National Catholic Register. "He is just another person at Mass praying with everybody else. That steadfastness has been his witness to our community here at Indiana." So cool!

At all our reintegration units the focus is on supporting the orphans as they transition back to the wild. For the female elephants this leads on to starting a family of their own. To date, we know of 77 calves born to elephants we’ve rescued and raised: their wild-living mothers choosing return, so that we might share in their joy. Three of the births in the last year have been in Umani. Babies Sulwe and Zigi, under the watchful gaze of mothers Sonje and Zongoloni, are two of them.
