This afternoon, I had the pleasure of speaking with a man I respect a lot, the legendary Aloysius Joy Matovu. For 47 years now, he has dedicated his life to Ugandan theatre, touching countless lives through his work as an actor and playwright. His passion for the craft remains as inspiring today as it was when he began his journey in 1979. This weekend, we have a chance to celebrate and support a living legend. Aloysius Matovu and his team will be performing at the National Theatre on Saturday and Sunday, with two shows each day, one at 2:30 PM and another at 7:00 PM. The performances will celebrate mothers and the special place they hold in our lives. If you can, please make time and attend. Instead, dad silently turns his back and walks away. Distressed, the toddler yells for his father and begins attempting to navigate the ropes. As he does he becomes entangled - at which point dad returns, picks the toddler up, places him back where he started, and again turns his back and walks off. Both videos depict parents encouraging independence and problem solving. But where one parent goes radio silent, physically distances himself, and creates a needlessly stressful situation, the other stays in close proximity, providing reassurance and verbal encouragement… (before improvising an amazing “happy dance” song). Promoting appropriate levels of independence is a worthy goal (in both instances). But the approaches we take make a difference. From earlier this morning, Joint Chiefs Chairman Dan Caine’s update on the two airmen rescued in Iran... “We’ve had — the Secretary and I have had the profound honor of speaking directly with many of the warfighters on that mission, from the downed crew that that were picked up to those forces that went and got them. Hearing these stories firsthand has only deepened our appreciation for their tenacity, creativity, courage, and grit of the American Joint Force. This is a story that gets to the very heart and soul of who we are as a joint force, who we are as Americans. Selfless sacrifice in service of others. From the back seater, Dude 44 Bravo, whose pure and unadulterated joy at seeing those helicopters come into the valley to get his front seater in daylight because he knew the front seater did not have a jacket and was so filled with heart leaping joy at his front seater, getting picked up to the nighttime folks that went in and then got him to the tanker forces that did the things that they had to do to give their own gas away to the support packages, to those that went into the desert landing site not once, not twice, but three times as we fought through multiple contingencies. Someone on here said they wish they had opportunities to wear nice clothes, but as a dad with growing kids, they have to wear things that allow them to do chores. I don't think dressing well is the same as dressing up. I also don't think that your relationship to clothes has to be about impressing others. So even if someone doesn't find your outfit cool or stylish, there can be elements in the attire that make you feel your best. Of course, I can't easily lay out this wardrobe for you, not least because we're on Twitter. Getting people into the right clothes requires time, conversations, and experimentation. But if I were a dad with growing kids and needed clothes suitable for chores, I'd opt for stylish versions of workwear. Such clothes can be as cheap or expensive as you'd like. For instance, you can find fatigues at Army surplus stores for about $50 or at specialty boutiques such as Bryceland's for $388. Carhartt's double-knee pants are $65, but Polo Ralph Lauren sells a pair I especially like for $400. Levi's has double-knee jeans on sale right now for $40; Self Edge, my favorite denim shop, has an endless selection of Japanese raw denim selvage jeans for $250 and up. None of these are necessarily better or worse than the others; it's about figuring out which you prefer. Actor Rajiv Surendra, whose YouTube channel I really enjoy, recently addressed this when talking about a pair of white Filson pants that he's been wearing when working with red clay. White pants, of course, are notoriously difficult to keep clean. But when made in a more rugged workwear style and rendered in a heavier, sturdier material, they can withstand wear and tear and look better with age. By wearing these pants when he makes pottery, Surendra has stained his white pants a slightly dusty red — and they look better for it. You can get lots of clothes like this: work shirts made from chambray or denim; stout cotton sweatshirts instead of fine merinos. If the clothes snag or rip, great—learn to repair them yourself or send them to a mender. Visible mending can actually add charm to a garment (as you can see in the last slide). A few years ago, I interviewed my friend Andrew Chen, co-founder of one of my favorite denim brands, 3sixteen. At the time, he was raising two young sons (they are older now) and thus needed durable clothes that could be easily thrown into a wash. He said he favored materials that are easy to care for and suit his busy lifestyle. That meant heavier, textured flannel shirts (what's known as a "low-tension" weave in the industry), denim trucker and jungle cloth deck jackets, waxed leather roper boots, and of course, raw denim jeans. My friend Brian Davis, founder of one of my favorite vintage menswear shops (Wooden Sleepers in Tuckahoe, NY), is also a father. He favors vintage LL Bean, Champion sweats, and militaria. I imagine if he could speak to you now, he would recommend getting a pair of vintage US Army fatigues (pre-1980s, so they're made from pure cotton instead of a poly-blend), vintage oxford cloth button-down shirts (Brooks Brothers), and a Lee 101 trucker for summer and an LL Bean barn coat for fall. There are two reasons why you may enjoy these clothes. First, they are durable and will last a long time. Second, they will show patina with age. Over time, you will notice that your jeans are getting threadbare around the knees from playing with your kids on the floor; the chambray work shirt will have stains from where they chucked food at you. On dressier garments, these may spoil the aesthetic, but in workwear, they only add to the charm. The fades, rips, stains, and repairs are part of the look. Since such stains are related to people you love, the clothes will only be more cherished, incentivizing you to repair things rather than throw them away. Getting to this position requires knowing a bit about the history of these garments, so you know how to style them, as well as something about materiality. This was recorded last Thursday morning at SPCA in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The man is Gerald. He's 81 years old. He came in at 9:15 AM, right when the shelter opened. He had a tan Beagle on a worn leather leash. The dog's name is Otto. He's eight years old. Gerald and Otto have been together for seven years. Otto was a one-year-old shelter dog when Gerald's late wife Eleanor suggested they go for a drive one afternoon and ended up at the Lancaster County shelter. Eleanor picked Otto. Gerald said he was too energetic. Within three months, Gerald admitted he was wrong. Otto had been Gerald's constant companion since Eleanor passed away four years ago. Through the quiet mornings. Through the hard evenings. Through every slow walk around the neighborhood that gave Gerald's days a beginning and an end. Gerald's son Robert had been working for months on finding Gerald a place at Willow Valley Communities — a well-regarded facility twenty minutes from Robert's house. Gerald had resisted at first. Then a small health concern last fall made the conversation more urgent. Gerald agreed in December. Millstream was the right choice. Gerald knew it. Robert knew it Willow Valley didn't allow pets. Robert had searched for solutions. Family friends. Neighbors. His own home — but his wife had a serious allergy. He'd reached out to three different rescue organizations about finding Otto a good placement. Nothing had come together in time. Gerald had made the appointment at Pinewood himself. He didn't tell Robert until the morning of. Robert offered to come. Gerald said he needed to do it alone. He arrived at 9:15 with Otto on the worn leather leash and a paper bag with Otto's food, his two favorite toys, and a handwritten care sheet Gerald had spent two evenings writing - Otto's schedule, his preferences, the way he liked to sleep, the fact that he was nervous around loud trucks, the fact that he liked to sit on the left side of whoever he was with. The intake coordinator, a young man named Philip, took the paper bag carefully. The security footage shows Gerald standing at the intake desk. His shoulders are rounded forward. He's filling out the forms with his head down. Otto sits at his feet. Calm. Tail doing a slow, easy wag. Looking up at Gerald with the complete comfortable trust of a dog who has been on dozens of errands with this man and knows they always go back home together. Otto nudges Gerald's hand with his nose. Gerald doesn't look down. Otto nudges again, then rests his chin on Gerald's shoe. Gerald finishes the last form. Sets the pen down. Then he turns and crouches — slowly, with the careful movement of a man whose knees have earned the right to take their time — and takes Otto's face gently in both hands. He presses his forehead against Otto's. Stays there. Otto's tail wags. He doesn't pull away. He just sits there with his face in Gerald's hands, calm and trusting, tail going softly. Gerald stays for a long time. Then he stands. Hands the leash to Philip. Turns toward the door. He doesn't look back. Philip stood at the desk for a moment holding the leash. Otto was still looking toward the door. Philip told us later: "Otto had no idea. He was completely relaxed the whole time. I kept watching his face and he just looked like he was waiting for Gerald to finish up so they could leave together. He trusted Gerald completely. Completely." He paused. "That's the part that stays with me. Otto had no idea. And Gerald knew everything. And he still did it right. He did it gently and he did it because he loved Otto enough to make sure he was cared for." Robert called that afternoon. He's working with them on finding a permanent home for Otto. He said he told Gerald that evening how the drop-off had gone. Gerald didn't say anything for a moment. Then he asked if Otto had eaten his dinner. Philip had already left a note in the file. The reactions to this tweet are telling. About a year ago, I spoke with someone who has worked in the high-end denim industry for a few decades. He's traveled the world to meet with some of the best indigo dyers, fabric weavers, and cut-and-sew factories. He lives and breathes denim. We talked about whether the US could ever create a high-end denim industry that could rival Japan's. His answer, delivered to me without any sentimentality, was a straightforward "No." According to him, the issue isn't just history. To be sure, Japan has a long history of weaving textiles, which has led to a particularly robust denim industry in and around Okayama Prefecture. It was here, after all, that farmers found that the soil was too saline for rice cultivation sometime in the 17th century, so they switched to cotton. Over the next four hundred years, cotton cultivation here supported the development of yarn spinning, fabric weaving, and eventually a cut-and-sew industry that specialized in producing some of the world's best jeans. Economists call these "industrial clusters," which can be remarkably durable and particularly fruitful for innovation. But according to my friend, history is not enough to explain why Japan excels at producing high-end denim. He believes culture also plays a role. It can be uncomfortable to invoke culture as an explanatory variable, especially in today’s political climate. To be sure, sometimes "culture" is just used as a lazy variable to explain things when someone doesn't know enough about history, institutions, or laws. It's not the first variable I turn to when trying to understand social outcomes. However, my friend feels strongly that differences between Japanese and American culture lead craftspeople in Japan to approach spinning, dyeing, and weaving more as an art than as an industrial processes. They are also more open to experimentation — tinkering with machines to get neppy weaves, using slubby yarns, dyeing hanks in unique ways. In the US, he claims, people are much more focused on profit and efficiency. There's less appreciation for craft and therefore less incentive to produce the kinds of unusual, labor-intensive fabrics that distinguish high-end Japanese denim. I still think some structural factors are involved. In a nation of 350 million people, I'm confident that there are tens of thousands of people interested in craft. However, they can't become artisans because few apprenticeship programs exist. Skyrocketing rents and car dependency make it hard to earn a living as an artist or craftsperson, as you have to forgo earning a lot of money for a long time. The US government also provides little support for apprenticeships and craft-based businesses. Additionally, US fashion media focuses much more on trends and celebrities. In Japan, you can find hundreds of speciality publications that really get into the weeds about bourbon, woodworking, denim, tailoring, and any other hobby you can imagine. This creates an informed consumer base ready to purchase things from artisans. This came to mind as I scrolled through the replies to this tweet — the incredulity of jeans costing $300 and confident claims that jeans are just jeans. Lots of people insisting that some brand's $100 jeans are the same as these that cost $300. $300 for jeans is not even expensive in this corner of menswear. This Business Insider episode below gets into why a pair of Momotaro jeans can cost upwards of $2,000. It has much to do with how the material is dyed and the fabric is handwoven. Is this ridiculous? Yes, on some level. But to my mind, no more ridiculous than a lot of stuff celebrated in the US, such as monster truck rallies, sports memorabilia culture, and the garages full of expensive recreational equipment that gets used once a decade. Textiles are one of our earliest forms of art, so it's never a surprise to me to hear that some prosaic garment can be made in a more artisanal and thus expensive manner. Of course, whether you're willing to pay the price of these garments is another matter. But appreciating craftsmanship is always free.

I received this email from a Canadian father trying to save his 8-year-old boy from medical transition. I’ve removed all identifying info, and I’m working on finding him pro-bono lawyers. The school has already started socially transitioning his son with a girl’s name and pronouns, in SECRET! The father was not informed, despite having 50% custody, and the school did so without any psychological oversight. And a psychologist is already discussing puberty blockers, having never even met the child! This father needs help. Here’s the email: Hi Chris, My name is _______. I’m a father in _______, currently representing myself in the Supreme Court. I wanted to reach out because my case is unfolding right here in our backyard, and it shows how deep the ideological capture has gone. On July 16th, an arbitrator issued an award directing that my 8-year-old son be assessed for gender dysphoria by the head of ______ Gender Clinic. The arbitrator treated WPATH guidelines as if they were law, referred to my son by a different name, and ignored the evidence I filed — including an affidavit where my son said: “Mommy said I am trans.” For the past two years, my ex has been feeding him trans information without my knowledge. The school also began socially transitioning him in secret, effectively becoming the emotional and psychological caretakers of this identity. The arbitrator swept all of this aside, ruling as if affirmation was the only path. I had one call with the chosen psychologist. I didn’t even get to ask all my questions, but what shocked me is that puberty blockers were already discussed and tabled — despite this clinician never having met my son. This shows the conveyor belt in action: assessment, affirmation, and medicalization are treated as foregone conclusions. I’m now applying to have the award set aside. My only aim is to protect my son from being railroaded down this path. The arbitrator did find there was no “family violence” in my not affirming him, but everything else points toward ideological capture. It’s a lonely road. Most people seem to be walking around with moral blinders on. But I’ve followed your work, and I wanted to let you know about this case because it’s happening right here in ______. I look up to your courage and consistency — you’ve been one of the few willing to speak the truth. If you’d like to connect, I’d welcome it. *** I’ve now spoken at length with him and he’s extremely sharp, professional, etc. His son says he wants to have a big family one day.
