Drone First Responder Helps Officers Catch Shoplifting Suspect On June 17 at approximately 7:45 p.m., Arvada Police received a report from a loss prevention officer of an active shoplifting incident at the Target near 78th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. When confronted by store security, the suspect fled east on foot. Fortunately, our Drone First Responder (DFR) program was already in the air and quickly located the suspect, tracking his movements to a nearby Arby’s at 80th Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard. Responding officers arrived and were able to safely identify and contact the suspect inside the restaurant. During the investigation, officers discovered the suspect had an active arrest warrant and was allegedly responsible for stealing more than $340 worth of merchandise from the store. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and transported to jail. The Drone First Responder program continues to provide officers with real-time information, helping improve response times and safely resolve incidents throughout our community.

When officers arrived, they found the woman sitting on the side of the bridge, about to jump into the river below. The officers began speaking to the woman, and called for a RIGHT Care team, as well as a swift water rescue team from Dallas Fire-Rescue. The first responders continued talking with the woman for over an hour, keeping physical contact with her until she finally chose to stand up and step back over onto the bridge. The officers immediately embraced her and took her to a local hospital for medical evaluation. The immediate response by these officers, and the compassion and patience they showed, saved this young woman’s life. This investigation is documented under case number 037481-2026.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, at about 4:15 pm, the Dallas Police Department received a call from in the 3900 block of Northbound Julius Schepps Freeway reporting a male subject walking into traffic. A pilot from the Drone First Responder program utilized an Unmanned Aerial System to respond to the call. The pilot was able to locate the man walking on the freeway, maintain a view of the suspect, and direct uniformed elements to his location. Uniformed elements quickly located the man and successfully/safely removed him from the freeway before any harm came to him. On Wednesday, July 1, at approximately 5:00 p.m., a suspect entered the Community Banks of Colorado branch located at 7530 Grandview Avenue and announced, “This is a robbery.” The suspect also made statements indicating there could be guns and additional people involved. The Arvada Police Department's Drone First Responder (DFR) program quickly deployed a drone to the scene. The drone provided officers with real-time intelligence, allowing them to observe the suspect through the bank's front windows and entrance. This information enabled officers to safely establish a perimeter around the bank and wait for the suspect to exit, reducing the risk of a potential hostage situation. After receiving money from bank employees, the suspect moved toward the front door. Once the DFR pilot advised officers that the suspect was exiting the building, officers immediately contacted and arrested him without incident. The suspect was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on charges of Aggravated Robbery and is awaiting formal charges through the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office. The Arvada Police Department would like to commend the bank employees and patrons for remaining calm and composed during a frightening situation. Their actions, combined with the coordinated response of responding officers and the Drone First Responder team, helped bring the incident to a safe resolution.

On March 16, 2026, at approximately 11:15 a.m., Dallas Police officers assigned to the Project Safe Neighborhood Task Force located a vehicle that was reported stolen in an armed carjacking on March 15. The officers called for additional units and AIR-1 to maintain visual contact with the vehicle before attempting a traffic stop in the 12300 block of Greenville Avenue. As officers approached and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle, the car took off, and the officers immediately began to pursue it. With AIR-1 overhead, the suspect drove the wrong way down Greenville Avenue, and officers chased the driver onto I-635 with the suspect’s speed approaching 120 miles per hour. The suspect exited the freeway at Jupiter Road and continued to speed through residential areas. Because the helicopter was tracking the suspect, officers were able to safely navigate the residential areas and surface streets, following the suspect back onto I-635. The suspect sped through a construction zone, again reaching speeds over 100 miles per hour until he exited on Town East Boulevard and headed into the City of Mesquite, driving into oncoming traffic into the 2000 block of Town East Boulevard. With traffic building ahead, the suspect attempted to drive over the median and his vehicle became disabled. Dallas Police officers, assisted by officers from Mesquite and deputies from the Dallas Sheriff’s Office, took the suspect into custody. He was identified as 46-year-old Alfredo Hernandez and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, a state jail felony; Evading Arrest or Detention with a Vehicle, a third-degree felony; Manufacture / Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a second-degree felony; and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Felon, a third-degree felony. The Dallas Police Department’s new Drone as First Responder program officially launched today with eight remotely piloted drones based at Dallas Fire-Rescue stations across the City of Dallas. These drones are operated out of the Fusion/Real Time Crime Center and are designed to respond to calls for service in a two-mile radius from their base station. The base locations were selected based on heat maps of calls for service for both police and fire, placing them where they can potentially respond to the greatest number of calls. The pilots will be able to get to the scene quicker than in a squad car and begin to provide real-time intelligence and feedback to officers, as well as reduce the level of response or clear a call entirely if the incident has resolved. If a pilot sees a call in a drone’s response area where aerial intelligence can enhance officer safety, they can deploy a drone to provide critical updates to officers at the scene. Each drone is equipped with a thermal camera to help during nighttime operations, as well as a loudspeaker to make announcements to individuals on the ground. “I challenged our team to find innovative ways to continue improving our response times, and this new drone unit will not only keep officers free to respond to more calls, but provide real time updates as they are responding to calls,” said Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. “Even during our training, our pilots were able to clear three holding calls in an hour with one drone. That alone proved their value to us, and I’m looking forward to seeing the benefits in both officer safety and response times.” Our public safety partners at Dallas Fire-Rescue will also be utilizing the Drone as First Responder program, with training for pilots underway. Under the new program, in the event of a reported structure fire, a drone will be dispatched to the scene ahead of arriving apparatus. This real-time aerial perspective will allow incident command to assess the size, scope, and intensity of a fire before firefighters even step off the apparatus. “Dallas Fire-Rescue is proud to collaborate with DPD on any initiative that will make our city safer,” said Justin Ball, Chief of Dallas Fire-Rescue. “By strategically docking the drones at our fire stations in high-demand areas, we are optimizing our response times and ensuring our tactics are more precise, while adding an extra layer of protection for the city.” This collaborative partnership between police and fire departments represents a major step forward in using smart-city technology to protect both residents and first responders.

New: Police Respond to Suspicious Activity Call — Man Riding Bull Through Walmart Parking Lot Officers were dispatched after a caller reported a “male with a cowboy hat riding a whitish bull up and down the parking lot” outside a Walmart. When officers arrived, they located the rider and bull nearby in the lot of Tractor Supply Co. on W. State Street. The man told police he was passing through town for a rodeo event at Garwood Arena in Columbiana this weekend. The situation ended without incident — and not before one of the responding officers climbed onto the bull for a photo.

The DRPS Drone Unit was deployed to search terrain that would have been extremely difficult—and dangerous—to cover on foot. A K9 dog took down a suspect who attacked a parking lot attendant in San Diego on Sunday. The suspect allegedly struck the victim on the head with a broken wooden cane and refused to cooperate with officers when they arrived on the scene. Officers fired multiple non-lethal rounds at the suspect before deploying a K9 unit, who tackled and bit the man, giving other officers a chance to apprehend him.

A K9 dog took down a suspect who attacked a parking lot attendant in San Diego on Sunday. The suspect allegedly struck the victim on the head with a broken wooden cane and refused to cooperate with officers when they arrived on the scene. Officers fired multiple non-lethal rounds at the suspect before deploying a K9 unit, who tackled and bit the man, giving other officers a chance to apprehend him.
