Last night, China Central Television (CCTV) aired its 2026 Chinese New Year Gala celebrating the Year of the Horse. This year, they were noticeably more fluid and coordinated — a remarkable improvement, even if they’re still likely operating under some level of remote supervision. When it comes to humanoid robotics, most of the visible momentum today seems to be coming from the U.S. and China. Companies like Tesla (with Optimus) and Boston Dynamics in the U.S., alongside rapidly advancing Chinese firms, dominate the headlines. So what happened to Europe and Japan? Japan was once seen as the global leader, especially with Honda’s ASIMO and SoftBank Robotics’ humanoid projects. However, ASIMO was retired, and much of Japan’s robotics focus shifted toward industrial automation and service robots rather than full-scale general-purpose humanoids. Europe, meanwhile, remains strong in industrial robotics, research, and precision engineering — with players like ABB and KUKA — but hasn’t pushed aggressively into commercial humanoid platforms at the same scale or speed as the U.S. and China. In short, it’s less that Europe and Japan disappeared, and more that the center of gravity in humanoid robotics — especially AI-driven, general-purpose humanoids — has shifted toward U.S.–China competition. Whether that gap widens or narrows will depend on breakthroughs in embodied AI, cost reduction, and real-world deployment over the next few years.

🚨 Hasan Piker’s Producer Cheers China’s AI Rise and Patriotic Robots While Fearing America’s Tech Will Be Used Against Him This is Eric Hovagim, a producer and researcher for Hasan Piker, reporting from China that America is “getting lapped” technologically. Hovagim praises China’s state-directed approach to technological development and argues that people there view AI as a tool of “liberation.” He then excitedly describes Beijing building an international AI coalition spanning much of the Global South, including BRICS, the African Union, the Arab League, CARICOM, and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. This clip is a good example of why Americans should bring more nuance to debates over AI and data-center development. Legitimate concerns deserve serious debate, but reflexive opposition also carries costs, especially while China is treating AI infrastructure as a source of national strength and global influence. In China, AI and the infrastructure needed to power it are presented as engines of national progress, liberation, and Global South power. Here in the United States, AI is increasingly portrayed as inherently sinister, its companies are targeted by far-left activists, and opposition to data-center development has become one of the left’s most popular organizing causes. The contrast should be obvious. China is building with the intention of leading the future, while much of the American left is organizing against the infrastructure the United States will need to compete.

This morning my wife & I watched the live stream of the humanoid robot games. Most of the live stream is quite boring, with a camera wandering around the arena looking for action. But while many demos feel unimpressive, what is interesting is not the level, but the change. Bad robots can still represent an extraordinary trajectory. The trajectory seems impressive in scale and skill. Watching the opening ceremony and seeing the robots march in unison sends an eerie military message. The images are ominous. You don’t want to mess with a country that can ship endless waves of mechanized soldiers. In the 2010s, demos used to involve a robot or two. The scale of the parade alone is a meaningful uptick in a key derivative. But some demos are also impressive in skill. The robots that played tennis or ping pong are reacting in fractions of a second while adjusting their balance and position while targeting a ball. This seems simple to us, but two decades ago, having a humanoid walk up or down a few steps was considered a good demo. So the slope in skill is there as well. So how should we interpret this? On the one hand, as a scholar, I totally respect the effort. It is a competition filled with startups, grad students, and lab directors who have poured their heart and soul into making these robots. At the end of the day, the event is like an academic conference serving also as a public display of how much the field of robotics has advanced. It is a testament to a growing industry. On the other hand, I also feel the clear military implications and undertones. It is mostly a local event. There are only a few teams not from China, which feels lopsided for a technology with strong geopolitical implications at a time when global cooperation is weak. The key question to focus on is where these humanoids be in 5 or 10 years. Robotics has been around the corner since before I was born. But this time it feels like the technology and the market are coming together within an economy that is vast & booming. Remember that when it comes to scale, China is not a country, but a “planet.” Its domestic market alone might be enough to scale a strategic sector. If the trajectory continues, maybe China will become the first “planet” on Earth to mass-produce artificial people.
