Vicky Hu accuses Randall of packing the board room with data center workers and data center supporters before the start time of the meeting, which means residents like Hu - who also arrived early - had to sit/stand in an overflow room outside the chamber. I’m told when several homeowners arrived at the meeting to express their concerns about data centers and transmission lines, the seats were taken and so they left. There was nowhere to go. Loudoun, one of the richest counties in America, with a median household income of around $170,000, has become the unlikely center of a new data center-based industrial revolution. And it's not just Loudoun. Data center construction is up about twenty times nationwide in three years, leading to an enormous political backlash. New York State imposed a moratorium on data center construction, and even Republican Greg Abbott of Texas has put a temporary pause in place. Meanwhile, speaking for myself, I’ve seen a ton of fear-mongering about them, with very little in the way of clear explanation of what the costs and benefits are and what they mean for the localities that might bring them in. I've brought Judge on to walk through in granular detail how data centers work, how Loudoun County became ground zero for the data center boom, and the recent pushback against data centers. We also talk about the unfortunate habit that AI CEOs have of seeming like the gloomiest people in the world in relation to the products they are trying to sell.

Stafford County residents are pushing back while developers try to convince them data centers would be good for their wallets. For instance, developers point out 84 percent of the local tax burden falls on Stafford County homeowners. Aside from spending, that’s why taxes are going up. This year, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors raised taxes even higher than Fairfax County --- costing the average homeowner $1,800 more. The board is looking to data centers to help solve that problem. However, several residents are concerned about living next to data centers and the impacts on water and electricity bills. Some residents add that Stafford County’s tax rate on data centers is extremely low compared to Loudoun County, Fairfax and Prince William—-meaning data centers won’t generate as much tax revenue as nearby counties. STACK's Stafford Technology (data center) Campus spans 500 acres. It’s being built right now. If you’ve driven near I-95 in Stafford, you’ve probably seen it. The project is estimated to produce $150 million in tax revenue a year. But if Stafford County raised its data center tax rate to the level of Loudoun County, the county could see more than double or triple that amount of tax revenue.
