Vicky Hu accuses Randall of packing the board room with data center workers and data center supporters before the start time of the meeting, which means residents like Hu - who also arrived early - had to sit/stand in an overflow room outside the chamber. I’m told when several homeowners arrived at the meeting to express their concerns about data centers and transmission lines, the seats were taken and so they left. There was nowhere to go. It appears Randall’s town hall back fired and left many Loudoun residents angry instead of listened to. When Randall was under fire in 2023 for using thousands of tax dollars on lavish international trips, she was accused of getting her people to show up to the board meeting early to make it look like more people supported her taxpayer funded trips than actually did. We need the data centers. We have to win the AI race. My guest for episode 5 of Counterweight is Manhattan Institute's Judge Glock. This spring he wrote about Loudoun County, VA in City Journal. Loudoun, one of the richest counties in America, with a median household income of around $170,000, has become the unlikely center of a new data center-based industrial revolution. And it's not just Loudoun. Data center construction is up about twenty times nationwide in three years, leading to an enormous political backlash. New York State imposed a moratorium on data center construction, and even Republican Greg Abbott of Texas has put a temporary pause in place. Meanwhile, speaking for myself, I’ve seen a ton of fear-mongering about them, with very little in the way of clear explanation of what the costs and benefits are and what they mean for the localities that might bring them in. I've brought Judge on to walk through in granular detail how data centers work, how Loudoun County became ground zero for the data center boom, and the recent pushback against data centers. Stafford County residents are pushing back while developers try to convince them data centers would be good for their wallets. For instance, developers point out 84 percent of the local tax burden falls on Stafford County homeowners. Aside from spending, that’s why taxes are going up. This year, the Stafford County Board of Supervisors raised taxes even higher than Fairfax County --- costing the average homeowner $1,800 more. The board is looking to data centers to help solve that problem. However, several residents are concerned about living next to data centers and the impacts on water and electricity bills. Some residents add that Stafford County’s tax rate on data centers is extremely low compared to Loudoun County, Fairfax and Prince William—-meaning data centers won’t generate as much tax revenue as nearby counties. The project is estimated to produce $150 million in tax revenue a year. "The most important thing in the next 3-4 years is data centers in space. In every way, data centers in space, from a first principles perspective, are superior to data centers on earth. In space, you can keep a satellite in the sun 24 hours a day. The sun is 30% more intense, which results in six times more irradiance than on Earth. So you don't need a battery. The cooling in these data centers is incredibly complicated. Space cooling is free. You just put a radiator on the dark side of the satellite. The only thing faster than a laser going through a fiber optic cable is a laser going through absolute vacuum. Link satellites with lasers, and you have a faster and more coherent network than any data center on Earth."
