A bill was introduced called “the Data Center Water and Energy Transparency Act” to mandate reporting of energy and water consumption to states and the EPA This is an issue, here’s one example The Quality Technology Services data center in Fayette County used 29–30 million gallons of water went unmetered and unbilled for months without initial detection. When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

This is a boat ramp that has not seen water for years” Cheyenne Wyoming is about 20 miles away and Meta, Microsoft, and other major companies have Data Centers facilities or expansions There are 8 more planned projects statewide adding significant water and electricity usage Now there aren’t any data centers I couldn’t find by Crooked Creek so it’s mainly drought and low rainfall here, but the entire surrounding area is in a drought. Not a good time to keep adding data centers

Some parts are completely dry and overall it’s only at 23% capacity 24 large hyperscale data centers and 379 smaller data centers are located across the 7 Colorado River Basin states Cities, farms and industry in 7 states and Mexico pull more water than The Colorado River reliably supplies To make things even worse, A high-profile proposed $10 billion data center is being planned right next to Lake Powell
