David Cronenberg is a director I’m going to spotlight as long as I’m running this account. He’s a one-of-one director who’s constantly creating something new. A History of Violence is as good as movie-making gets. Viggo Mortensen & Ed Harris, not to mention William Hurt, are all at each...

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE [2005] Directed by David Cronenberg Between this film and Eastern Promises two years later, Viggo Mortensen is a completely different person. Unrecognizable. Ed Harris as the villain is unforgettable.

A History of Violence is one of the films I included below in my earlier tweet about Viggo Mortensen & while Viggo didn’t receive any recognition from The Academy here, at least William Hurt got a nomination. David Cronenberg & Mortensen have a short-hand together that allows for brilliant filmmaking like this to take place. The story about a man trying to out-run his violent, messy past, Mortensen loses himself in this film. This is mandatory viewing if you’re serious about Cinema.

Eastern Promises is cinema done right. When I tell you this is proper cinema, I mean it. David Cronenberg and Viggo Mortensen are as real as they come. They combine for an incredibly violent yet incredibly emotional film. This movie means everything to me. A reason I love cinema.

Warren Beatty received four individual Oscar nominations for Reds. He remains one of only a handful of filmmakers in Cinema history to be nominated as an actor, director, writer & producer for a single film. Folks, if you haven’t seen Reds, you have a duty to seek out this film.

If you haven’t seen Megadoc yet- the documentary on the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis- you should really give it a shot. I saw this in theaters with director Mike Figgis in attendance. I learned a lot from Figgis & this film. Not to mention it’s highly entertaining

William Friedkin was a fearless director with a filmography that’s as good as any American director. Friedkin’s To Live and Die in LA is great filmmaking & features one of the best car chases I’ve ever seen in a film. Friedkin passed a few years ago but left a memorable legacy.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s directorial debut came in 1996 with this film- Hard Eight. This entire film is a history lesson in modern American Cinema & will expose you to so many early signs of PTA’s vision as a director. I’ve always said this feels like a Scorsese movie in many ways.

David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds quietly became one of the best films released in 2025. Cronenberg is endlessly interesting- he always has a fresh perspective. When paired with Vincent Cassel? All bets are off. Such is the case with this film- which I encourage you to watch.

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s performance in Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead has to be seen to be believed. If you haven’t watched this film- directed by the late, great Sidney Lumet- I’m begging you to give this a shot. PSH is a force of nature in this film- as is Ethan Hawke.

I’ll be with Tim Ballard tomorrow at 12:45pm for the premiere of his new film at the InterContinental Hotel in London, near the O2. Come and see us! It’s free of charge! You have to see this movie. Sound of Freedom | Movie was incredible, but this one is something else… it’s all real life! It’s about going after the evil that targets our women and children around the world! See you there tomorrow. Bring as many people as possible — this is important! 🇬🇧🤝🇺🇸

Bradley Cooper has a new film coming out this weekend titled Is This Thing On? & you know what? I’m really looking forward to it. I didn’t like Maestro that much but A Star is Born is a peak at Cooper’s potential as a director. I hope this is a return to form. I’m excited.

The Iron Claw is on Netflix & it’s a film you should watch if you haven’t yet. I’m not suggesting this film has high rewatch value- it’s a tough emotional journey. But the performances from this entire cast are too damn good to be ignored. This deserved #Oscar recognition.

Causalities of War is an incredibly painful but necessary watch. This has to be in the conversation for one of the best war films in the history of Cinema because director Brian de Palma does not pull a single punch. This is such a raw look into the psychological impact of war & it’s done with actors like Sean Penn & Michael J. Fox at the top of their game. I’m begging you to sit your ass down & watch this film if you haven’t seen it yet. It will change your expectations of Cinema.

Heat’s entire opening sequence is the greatest opening to any film I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure if this is constitutes just one opening “scene” per se, but the entire opening heist is imprinted on in my mind for the rest of time. I pray to God that Heat 2 doesn’t fall in the “bullshit legacy sequels” bucket & turns into something meaningful, even if it’s not as good as this film here.

This weekend is your chance to watch David Fincher’s The Game. 2026 is turning into a juggernaut for Cinema- so much is happening. But don’t lose sight of the fact we’re getting a new David Fincher film this year. So, act accordingly: see this film if you haven’t yet. It’s great.

“Unchained Melody” has always been one of those songs that just touches the soul. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the most beautiful songs ever written. To record it as a duet with josh groban was such a special moment for me. What a joy it’s been creating this together, and I’m so excited we’ll be performing it live this summer! Josh’s album “Cinematic” is out now! See yall on tour !! ✨

Ari Aster on why he considers "Midsommar" (2019) to be a fairy tale: "I see the film as a fairy tale more than anything else. It does have a structure of a fairy tale. If you’re just looking at Dani’s trajectory, and she is the person we’re most aligned with, at the beginning she loses a family and at the end she gains one. Part of the fun of making this film was making a film that functioned for most of the visitors as a folk horror film, but for the [character] that we’re most joined to it’s something else. It ends up revealing itself as a perverse wish fulfillment fantasy. It’s doing two things at once. You could see this place as being a real lived-in place with a rich history and deep traditions, or you could watch the movie in a way that has this community function strictly as a manifestation of Dani’s will: they’re only here to provide her all of the needs she’s being denied." (Ari Aster's interview with A.E. Hunt, Filmmaker, 2019) P.S: On this day, 7 years ago, "Midsommar" (2019) premiered in Los Angeles, California.
