Season 2 of The Agency is sheer Cinema. Dear God. My list of summer television is long & includes finishing Cape Fear, Sugar Season 2, Silo Season 3, and Widow’s Bay. But my dad actually called me last week & told me The Agency needs to cut the line. Three episodes into S2 & I’m blown away. Michael Fassbender is so, so good here. My full review coming this week.

Michael Fassbender has entered a stage of his career where he’s routinely playing a tight-lipped, sleek agent of some sort with limited but meaningful dialogue (see The Killer, The Agency, Black Bag). All of these performances are excellent from Fassbender. But a reminder that before Fassbender found this stage of his career, he played an excellent Magneto. X-Men First Class will always have my stamp of approval & Fassbender is the reason.

The first time Michael Fassbender saw "Shame" (2011, McQueen) was with his father Josef during the premiere in Venice. After watching the movie, both of them were relieved that his mother could not make the screening. She developed a back pain on the eve of the screening. When the lights came up after the screening, Fassbender felt "Shell-Shocked & naked", since everyone in the crowd saw him in pretty uncomfortable situations in the movie. Michael Fassbender was near-perfect as Steve Jobs over a decade ago. This would’ve won Fassbender an Oscar had he not run into Leo for The Revenant. But I don’t see how Fassbender could’ve been better here. He became Steve Jobs- this transcended acting in a lot of ways.

I’m not always right, but I was right about this film: it’s excellent. Michael Fassbender, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz & Penelope Cruz are all outstanding in one of Ridley’s darkest, most violent films. Pulitzer Prize winner Cormac McCarthy wrote a film that I think is razor sharp.
