He is so cute! I can see the cartoon version now… Lenny takes a bunch of pellets into his trunk and shoots them at the baboons saying ‘you want pellets all give you the pellets’

Surely there’s nothing happier than a baby elephant. Little Lenny always takes it to the next level, footloose, fancy-free, and full to the brim with bravado! Lenny is a ‘grandchild’ of our Orphans’ Project: His mother, Lima Lima, was orphaned when she was just a baby herself and raised in our care. Now, she is bringing up her own family in the wild. Let's enjoy Zigi seizing an opportunity to bug Lenny! Initially, Lenny was determined to ignore him, but the younger bull tailed him, pulled his ears, and generally made himself such a nuisance that he had to engage. The antics that ensued even caught the attention of rescued orphan Kapei, who usually can’t be bothered to intervene in baby play! Lenny and Zigi are two of 77 calves born to orphans we rescued, raised, and rewilded. These elephants are the greatest testament to the success of our Orphans’ Project — showing how saving one life can pave the way for generations to come. Meet our wild-born calves:

Shhh, the babies are sleeping! (Sulwe closest, Lenny fidgeting behind, and Zigi is seen at the end) With three infants in the mix, our Umani herd now has a decidedly different rhythm. As adults, elephants sleep the least of any mammal, logging as little as two hours a day. But babies need rest — and lots of it! Sulwe, Lenny, and Zigi are just a few months old, requiring naps throughout the day. When they show signs of sleepiness, the entire herd stops and circles round, so they can rest safely and soundly. Every herd has one. The calf who's first to the mud bath, last to leave the waterhole, and somehow always at the centre of whatever's happening. At Umani, that's Lenny – Lima Lima's wild-born son who has earned the nickname "the Prince" from Keeper Philip. He charges through the forest with ears flapping, races to greet 'auntie' Murera whenever he visits, and has perfected the art of securing extra milk from his favourite foster mother. Lenny is one of 88 calves born to orphans we've raised and rewilded, with more to come as our orphans enjoy a baby boom. Celebrate every new life with us:

Lenny is 17 months old and has firmly established several important facts about himself. He is fast. He is sociable. And he is, as this footage confirms, equally at home in the water as he is on dry land. Born in December 2023 to ex-orphan Lima Lima, Lenny is the 67th known wild-born calf to an orphan raised through our Orphans' Project. Many more have arrived since, but we think you'll agree there is something uniquely special about this water baby. It's probably because of his mother – a suspected poaching orphan who established herself as the scout of the herd, looking out for her elephant family and Keepers alike. Alongside this responsible streak runs a verve for life that sees her parenting lean decidedly hands-off! Leaving Lenny to run riot in the water (supervised by us, of course!) Discover more about Lenny:

Ten years ago, Umani Springs didn't have a single wild-born calf. Today, the Kibwezi Forest is starting to look like a crèche. One little star of the herd is Lenny. That's him, with his characteristically confident trunk shakes at the end. He is Lima Lima's firstborn, and one of four calves now growing up wild at Umani. He spends his days alongside three other calves and his adopted nannies. A ready-made playgroup, all born to orphans who were once rescued and raised by us. Remind yourself of his mother, Lima Lima's incredible story, from orphan to guide to mother:

This handsome chap is proof that our orphans might be raised by humans, but in adulthood, this matters little to the wild elephants they encounter. Wild bulls have been arriving at our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit in recent months, drawn through the Kibwezi Forest by our ex-orphans Lima Lima and the other female elephants at Umani. During their flirtations, these bulls don't seem to mind or care about our orphans' more unusual route to the wild – the 94 wild-born calves we know of are testament to this! One of these offspring is Moon, delivered last month. Meet her:

No nonsense Sulwe reminds us that the matriarchy rules — even among the smallest elephants! Lenny tries to clamber atop her, she puts the tiny bull in his place, and then cements the matter with a move that speaks a thousand words! Established in 2014, our Umani Springs Reintegration Unit is fast turning into a crèche, as the first orphans raised here are growing up, coupling with wild bulls, and having their own calves. Lenny and Sulwe are two of the latest additions. Although they aren’t related by blood, these calves will grow up in the wild as siblings — not unlike their mothers, Lima Lima and Sonje, orphans who were raised side by side in our care. Learn more about Sulwe at:

Sullivan is all bravado. When he and his mother, ex-orphan Suguta, visit our Ithumba Reintegration Unit, Sullivan is the one you notice: running here and there, rolling about in the mud, charging up to the dependent orphans at full tilt. Sullivan is one of 94 known calves born to orphans we have rescued, raised and rewilded – and each new baby is proof that rescuing orphans can have a lasting impact on Kenya's elephant populations. Meet Sullivan and the rest of our wild-born family:

From the spoiled firstborn calf of our Umani herd, to a climbing frame for the next crop of babies! Mwana has become a wonderful big sister figure to Lenny and Sulwe, two of the three newest wild-born members of this unique herd. These babies have each been mothered by an elephant we rescued as an orphan, raised, and rewilded. For young bulls, establishing dominance starts early. Wild-born calves Zigi and Lenny are already practising – the wrestling, the posturing, the jostling for position. Sulwe, the only girl in the pileup, holds her own. She is never far from the action – which usually dissolves into a tangle of trunks and legs. Their tussles and squabbles belie something truly special: they are only here today because we rescued their mothers – orphans themselves, many years ago. Amid a baby boom among our ex-orphans, meet more tiny-trunked 'grandcalves':

Special delivery — Lima Lima has given birth! Her baby boy, Lenny, is an effervescent little elephant, just like his mum. We’re busy writing up the story, but couldn’t wait to share this joyful news with you! — It feels especially poignant that Lima Lima went into labour on Giving Tuesday. By saving one elephant’s life, we pave the way for so many others. Yesterday, as you rallied behind our cause, an orphan raised through our Orphans’ Project was bringing the next generation into the world. What a beautifully fitting symbol of our mission. — And if you want to reacquaint yourself with our new mum, the extraordinary Lima Lima, visit:
