DB Press Man Release Drill - Occasionally, safeties will press, so they need to work man coverage releases - In the drill, the receiver has a five-yard window to release - They need to stay between the two lines and work to stack - If the DB can widen them outside, they have done their job - WKU likes to be a yard off the ball when they're working press - In press coverage, they think of a basketball analogy of playing one-on-one - Force the receiver to "take a jump shot" and not get dunked on Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

DB Block Destruction Turnover Drill - Working to incorporate several facets in the drill - Block destruction, then scoop and score or strip attempts - Stalk block - strike shed, keep hands inside - If the hands are outside, the DB will lose more times than not - Most receivers don't want to block - The more aggressive you can be, the better off you are Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

DB Finish Drills - The most important part of secondary play is the finish - Coaches need to work with players on not panicking at the end of the play - Every DB at every level is going to get beaten at some point - The difference between good and elite is not panicking and playing the football - Work on in phase, out of phase, and trail to finish on the ball - 2 ball drill - running downhill, finish and catch the football, then high point another ball - Put the DBs in different spots, different passes, give them landmarks to work through and finish Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

DB Hard Joint Technique Drill - In some goal-line and short-yardage situations, DBs must take on a block from a guard - Same foot, same shoulder concepts, reduce the blocking surface - Fullbacks will track the DB in power schemes like 22 or 32 personnel - Meet the blocker in the backfield and knock him back - Once the ball carrier gets inside of the DB, hard joint, squeeze, and punch the ball - The DB secures his area before spinning out to keep the ball from getting outside Andy LaRussa, Asst Head Coach, Western Kentucky Andy LaRussa #GlazierClinics

DB High Shoulder Drill - Coaches should instruct defensive backs to eyeball the receiver's near hip to determine the route's direction. - When a receiver's hip moves toward the defender, it indicates the route is rolling over or through, requiring the defender to close the space and attack the hip. - If the receiver's hip moves away from the defender, it signals a vertical route that the defender must chase to reach the catch point. - Defenders should maintain proper footwork and spacing, utilizing techniques such as the kickstep and punch during the play. - Defensive backs must fight force with force by placing their hands on the receiver if the receiver's hands are on them. - Players should be violent at the reception point to effectively knock the football away from the receiver. DB Mirror Dodge Drill - Defensive backs should focus on maintaining their initial leverage while using proper footwork and hand placement to widen the wide receiver during the release. - Defensive backs must avoid putting their near hand in during an inside release because it locks their directional hip and prevents fluid movement. - Coaches should instruct players not to press or lean into an inside release, as this often causes the defender to fall underneath the route and lose positioning. - When a receiver takes an inside release on a vertical route, the defender must burst to stack the route by fighting to get back on top of the receiver. - Players need to understand their defensive help, such as whether they are in a man-free coverage, to decide how to handle a receiver crossing their leverage. - The primary goal for a defensive back on an inside release vertical is to win the rep from the top side rather than trying to slice back underneath the receiver. DB Burst to Stack Drill - The drill focuses on the "burst to stack" technique, which is considered a critical skill for defensive backs. - Players must focus on using a burst of speed to get on top of the receiver's route. - Coaches should instruct players not to settle for being even with the receiver; they must strive to get on top. - The primary goal is to avoid falling underneath the route. - Ending up on the receiver's hip is an acceptable outcome and is much better than being underneath. - Defensive backs must specifically apply the burst to stack technique when a receiver takes an inside release. DB Tennis Ball Release Drill - This drill is suitable as a first activity of the day or can be utilized as a filler drill. - Defensive backs must maintain a natural arms-length distance from the receiver to protect their space. - Proper spacing is critical because allowing a receiver to get too close provides them the opportunity to push or use a flipper move. - The drill requires a combination of great footwork and precise eye placement. - Players should focus on a quick and violent punch of the tennis ball rather than trying to catch it. - The punch should be shot from the shoulders to simulate the correct contact point on a receiver. LB Intended Receiver Drill LB Run & Pass Techniques and Drills - Linbackers drop to their zones and then move with the Quarterback. - When they come back, they shuffle and then on the set and transfer, one will catch the ball, the second LB will block the intended receiver. - The off-backer comes around to lead the interceptor up the number. - The interceptor will run outside the number to the sideline to try to score. - Linebackers should be in a shuffle mode when the Quarterback turns his shoulders and until he drops his hand off the ball. - When the QB drops his hand, the LBs break to the ball. Davante Adams winning on the Post vs. an off & inside CB 🔑: eventually the DB HAS to respect us going vertical - FA = eat cushion ASAP - Burst into the blind spot to force the DB to turn & run - Slip the hip and dig to separate - Eyes up not back for the 🏈 - Grab the rebound

O-Line Strain Drill - The strain drill begins with the offensive lineman in a proper fit position with elbows bent. - All drills should start with the offensive lineman's feet on fire rather than from a static position. - On the ready command, the player's feet must move, and on the go command, the hips should be the first thing to activate the drive movement. - During the drill, the defensive player maintains outside leverage on the shoulder pads and attempts to pull the lineman off the line. - Offensive linemen must focus on maintaining fast feet, staying square, and keeping a strong position with their elbows squeezed. - This drill is designed to train players for the finish phase of blocking a defensive lineman or for second-level strikes on linebackers. University of Miami DBs working on their pedal and open breaks. Simple but effective drill to sharpen the basics of DB footwork. Always good if you can use a football in the drill.

You have to allow the DB to challenge on upfield routes. Ravens DB TreDavious White is playing the ball and his head is clearly turned. What’s allowed at the end of the play should be allowed. Tell me I’m lying. “That’s an O.P.I” #BUFvsBAL

THROW-BY CUTUP 🔑’s - Sell vertical: must force the DB to turn and run! - Keep the DB close: we want to take leverage at the TOR. Further away = more distance to travel + weaker contact (if any) - Win with your feet: do not sacrifice your footwork. The hands finish the job! 1/2

D-Line Press to Scoop Drill - The press to scoop drill is designed for defensive linemen to handle situations where they encounter a double team combo or a zone block. - When positioned on the backside of a play, the player must work to press the scoop as flat as possible against the line of scrimmage. - It is critical to get hands on the offensive player to prevent them from getting a free release to the second level of the defense. - Players are coached to keep their inside arm long, strong, and fully locked out while adjusting their position during the play. - To maintain power and leverage, the defensive lineman should work to get their inside leg up, utilizing a same hand and same foot technique. - If two blockers remain on the defensive lineman, another defender is free; once one blocker leaves, the lineman must be prepared to come off the block and make the play. LB 7 Cone Tackling Drill - The seven cone drill is specifically designed to prepare linebackers for open field tackling situations where they must effectively manage space. - A fundamental goal of the drill is for the defender to close the distance to the ball carrier, thereby taking away space and reducing the room available for maneuvers. - Coaches should emphasize maintaining leverage by staying inside out on the ball carrier, which forces the runner in a specific direction. - When approaching the ball carrier for a tackle, the linebacker should track the near hip and near number to ensure proper positioning. - The drill highlights the importance of the collision point, specifically teaching players to use the same foot and same shoulder to maximize power and safety. - As players progress to using pads, the drill can incorporate agility bags or crash mats to simulate speed tackles encountered on plays like screens, bubbles, and stretches. Now that the "Blueprint to beating Drake Maye" is playing high amounts of Cover 6 defense. I want to help demystify it's strengths and weaknesses: Definition: Cover 6 is simply two DBs on one side playing deep quarters and one DB on the opposite side playing deep half (Literally adding Cover 4 and Cover 2 concepts) It is great for fooling young players who can't read which coverage you are in when you are in a combo coverage. What works against flats: Pre-snap reads that quickly identify if the Will or the Sam are covering the flats can help you target that area of the field to capitalize on the speed difference between defender and skill position players. What works against Cover 2 side: Hole shots as well as comebacks/curls plus inside receiver corners What works against the Cover 4 side: Crossing over the face of the inside DB and running deep leverage "Bang 8" routes that isolate the outside DB This video breaks it down perfectly! #NEPats
