DB Mirror Dodge Drill - Defensive backs should focus on maintaining their initial leverage while using proper footwork and hand placement to widen the wide receiver during the release. - Defensive backs must avoid putting their near hand in during an inside release because it locks their directional hip and prevents fluid movement. - Coaches should instruct players not to press or lean into an inside release, as this often causes the defender to fall underneath the route and lose positioning. - When a receiver takes an inside release on a vertical route, the defender must burst to stack the route by fighting to get back on top of the receiver. - Players need to understand their defensive help, such as whether they are in a man-free coverage, to decide how to handle a receiver crossing their leverage. - The primary goal for a defensive back on an inside release vertical is to win the rep from the top side rather than trying to slice back underneath the receiver. WR Secondary Release Drill - Release drills should be treated as everyday drills that are performed at least twice a week with wide receivers and defensive backs. - Coaches should set up drills in the boundary area to simulate a lack of space, using a cone placed approximately six yards downfield. - The primary objective of any release is to be both fast and physical when getting off the line of scrimmage. - Wide receivers must wait to make their move until they have closed the cushion and are right on the defensive back's toes. - Executing a move too early allows the defender time and ground to recover, even if they initially lean or rock in the wrong direction. - After the release, receivers must focus on getting their chest out of the way, using physical hand techniques to stack the defender and return to their line as quickly as possible. LB Run Fits Drill The video outlines a linebacker drill designed to help players adjust their run fits based on the movement of defensive linemen. Key learning points include: - Dynamic Gap Fitting: Linebackers must be prepared to "make it right" rather than just fitting a pre-assigned gap if the defensive front is compromised. - Drill Setup: The drill utilizes a defensive lineman (represented by a coach with a bag) and a running back to simulate real-game scenarios. - Reacting to Defensive Line Movement: The linebacker must observe where the defensive lineman's head goes, such as a 3-technique getting knocked into an A-gap or a 2-eye getting reached or pushed into a B-gap. - Responding to Ball Carrier Cuts: Linebackers must mirror the running back’s cut and then "thud" him up to finish the tackle. - Redirecting and Filling: Players must practice redirecting their momentum; for example, if a linebacker expects to fill the B-gap but finds it occupied by a teammate, they must quickly jump cut or redirect to fill the new open gap. - Downhill Aggression: The goal of the drill is to train linebackers to see the opening and get downhill quickly to fill the vacant gap.
