Albert Ojwang Murder Trial: New Details Point to Fatal Assault in Custody, Missing CCTV Footage and Evidence Tampering The murder trial of former Nairobi Central Police Station OCS Samson Talaam and five other accused persons has entered a critical stage after the prosecution presented its opening case, alleging that Albert Omondi Ojwang was deliberately assaulted and killed while in police custody, with the State telling the court it intends to present medical, forensic and witness evidence to challenge the initial explanation that his death resulted from a self inflicted injury. The Director of Public Prosecutions has told the High Court that evidence gathered so far indicates Ojwang died from injuries consistent with a violent assault, including blunt force trauma, neck compression and multiple injuries sustained across his body, with prosecutors arguing that the circumstances surrounding his death point to a deliberate act rather than an accident as previously suggested. The court has also heard testimony from a CCTV technician who examined the Digital Video Recorder at Central Police Station and told the court that the device had been formatted, leaving investigators unable to access footage from the period surrounding Ojwang's death, with the witness further stating that some internal components of the system had been removed before the device was examined by investigators. The prosecution has further outlined a case centred on allegations of an attempted cover-up following Ojwang's death, telling the court it will rely on CCTV analysis, forensic evidence, police records and testimony from officers, family members and medical experts to reconstruct events inside the station and establish what happened after Ojwang was brought into custody alive. Former OCS Samson Talaam and the five co-accused persons have denied the murder charges, with the trial now expected to examine the evidence surrounding Ojwang's arrest, his time in police custody, the circumstances of his death, the handling of evidence afterwards and the individual responsibility of those accused in the case.

FROM OCS TO INMATE: THE FALL OF NAHASHON MUTUA, FORMER RUARAKA OCS He is Nahashon Mutua, former Officer Commanding Station at Ruaraka Police Station. He spent years in the Kenya Police Service, rising from young recruit to Chief Inspector. As OCS in one of Nairobi’s busiest areas, he signed charge sheets, supervised investigations, and processed suspects daily. Robberies, domestic disputes, assaults - he sent many people to prison. Ironically, some of those same people are now his fellow inmates at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING: DECEMBER 2013 Martin Koome Manyara was brought to Ruaraka Police Station after a domestic disturbance in Baba Dogo. He was intoxicated, had threatened family members, and neighbors called police. He was booked into the Occurrence Book and placed in cells. According to prosecution, Mutua later assaulted Martin inside the station - beating him with a metal rod and forcing his head into a drum of water. Martin died the next morning from his injuries. Investigators also alleged Mutua tried to conceal it by blaming remand prisoner Kelvin Odhiambo, influencing witnesses, and interfering with reports. IPOA took over. Mutua was charged with murder. He denied it from day one. His account: he carried out duties that night, interviewed those involved, directed charges, left instructions, then moved on. THE TRIAL & CONVICTION The court relied heavily on protected witnesses who claimed they saw him assault Martin through cell openings. No direct physical evidence placed a weapon in his hands, but circumstantial evidence + testimony was deemed sufficient. In 2018, he became one of the first OCS officers of his rank in Kenya convicted for a death in custody. Sentenced to death, later commuted to life. Appeals failed. Today he remains at Kamiti. HIS VERSION Mutua insists there’s another side. As OCS he dealt firmly with criminal groups in Ruaraka. That created enemies - people he arrested with influence inside and outside police. He wonders if old scores were settled through the case. He watched witnesses change accounts. Junior officers shifted responsibility. During investigations there were claims of KSh 1M bribes to influence the case. “Whether any of that affected the outcome is something only those involved truly know. I leave that to God,” he says. LIFE AT KAMITI Prison changed him. From commanding a station, he now teaches Chemistry to inmates preparing for exams. It gives him purpose. His family still stands by him. He’s lost his career, freedom, and old life - but not hope. “Maybe one day, someday, I will be out. Maybe.” His lesson: “Power and position can disappear overnight. What begins as an ordinary day at work can end up changing your life forever.”

Mobile store employee steals 400 dollars from elderly customer while fixing her phone. Houston Police officers responded to a fraud call after an elderly customer reported that $400 was fraudulently transferred from her Cash App account straight to a store employee’s account. The victim, Paula, had visited a Metro by T-Mobile store seeking assistance because her phone was low on storage and wouldn’t let her download apps. The employee on duty, identified as Kayla Allen, informed the customer that she needed a brand-new phone. While Kayla was setting up the new device, Paula stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. According to police and the victim's statement, Kayla accessed Paula’s Cash App without authorization while left alone with the device, transferring $400 directly to her own personal Cash App account. A second attempt to transfer an additional $500 was declined by the bank. When Houston Police officers arrived at the store, they verified the transaction records directly from the victim's phone. The Cash App confirmation explicitly listed Kayla Allen as the recipient, complete with her name and profile photo. A background check by responding officers revealed that Kayla had a prior criminal history involving identity theft and credit card fraud. Despite being confronted with digital evidence, Kayla denied any deliberate wrongdoing, claiming she didn't see the money come in and suggesting someone else might have done it. She did agree to give the money back to the victim. Officers subsequently placed Kayla under arrest, where she was officially charged with Scheme to Defraud. Of course she is no longer employed by Metro T-Mobile.
