New bodycam footage was released today showing the arrest of the driver after a pickup truck drove through a toll booth onto a Volusia County beach in Daytona Beach Shores, killing a toll worker. The toll booth attendant, Tammie Jo Baker, was just a few weeks shy of her 63rd birthday. The driver, 36-year-old Deanna Harrell of Ormond Beach, was driving approximately 40 mph when she struck the booth. After the impact she continued toward the water before getting stuck in the sand. Bystanders ran to the truck and pulled her out. Deputies reported a heavy odor of alcohol coming from the vehicle. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said “I think she was probably close to being killed on impact.” Tammie Jo Baker went to work that Monday afternoon and never came home. Deanna Harrell is in custody. NEW: Drunk driver kills toll booth worker, drives truck into ocean, then released under Baker Act — now wanted for vehicular homicide On Monday, 35-year-old Deanna Harrell was sent home early from her job in Daytona Beach Shores. Instead of going home, she stopped at a lounge where she had two drinks and a shot before getting behind the wheel. Over the next 30 minutes, multiple 911 callers reported her driving erratically. At 12:38 p.m., Harrell sped into the Dunlawton Avenue beach ramp toll booth, crushing the structure and killing 63-year-old toll worker Tammie Jo Baker on impact. She then drove onto the beach and straight into the Atlantic Ocean, where her truck became stuck in the surf. Bystanders pulled her from the vehicle minutes later, and officers reported a strong odor of alcohol coming from the truck. Harrell was initially arrested but placed under a Baker Act mental health hold after threatening to harm herself. A medical facility evaluated and released her before investigators could complete paperwork to upgrade the hold to criminal charges. Whilst standing outside the door of the home in question, Luis Diaz Polanco (31) opened fire with a 9mm handgun.
