Kari Pata are leaves used extensively in alot of Indian dishes, it's basically a spice like tumeric, ginger, garlic etc. So as she said 'let's eat curry' is like saying 'let's eat paprika'.

Fact of the matter, we all cannot be 100% precise about your culture just because it’s your culture.

I mean yeah you lower something down to easily understandable so it’s accessible to a larger audience, ain’t nobody have time to truly learn the layering and intricacies of every country and culture in the world. It’s quite dumb to expect foreigners to understand.

I actually had this experience myself. Here in Kuwait—and I think across the Gulf—we’re familiar with a particular style of Indian cooking, and we grew up thinking that was all there was to Indian cuisine: chapati, biryani, and similar dishes. When I went to London, I discovered just how vast and diverse Indian cuisine really is. I visited an Indian restaurant where all the staff were Indian, and I remember the manager telling me that the food we knew came from Ahmedabad or Hyderabad—I can’t remember which. Perhaps that’s because of the Muslim communities in those areas, and because many of the Indians who came to our part of the world were Muslim?

I don’t get it. They dumb it down yes that’s why understanding works. People dumb English culture down to tea.

This is dumb. If you are speaking English and you ask for bread, we don’t go around asking what type typically. If someone said bread bread in response, I would assume they want whatever basic bread we have. Indians never miss a chance to be condescending.

That woman is well spoken. The british have historically used Curry to refer to indian food in general. II was in a debate club and the topic was "Curry vs Chinese food" and that confused me. comparing one dish with every single dish from china.

The question was What is curry? and somehow turned into a race and colonial degrading lecture. It's possible I'm missing some context here of what this whole podcast/discussion was set up to be. But dealing with the we context in this video,Trevor set up the dialog and providing background to ask what is the stuff that we call "Curry" and "Naan". If not the make believe word by he colonial white man WHAT IS IT THEN?? I expected that lady to educate us on that. This should have gone the cultural and culinary route not the Colonialism and Racism route.

"Torkari" - bengali, means something to eat rice with, that has gravy. I think curry came from that word.

This women sounds so fucking stupid. I’m sure she has no problem calling food from Russia or China or Brazil by those names. Also making something more accessible and evolving that language doesn’t mean it’s dumber, it just makes it easier. I fucking hate people like this.

Everyone says American cuisine. Curry comes from the curry leaves that are used, but calling it Indian food is only the same as saying Chinese... Nothing racist about it it's just giving a general term.
