DeepMind's Carolina Parada says Asimov's Three Laws aren't enough to keep robots safe. Her team built the Asimov Dataset, a growing set of safety priors, extracted by AI and refined by humans. Robots don't follow rules. They learn to reason about harm.

excellent work, but yeah, the three laws were a plot device intentionally crafted to have fatal problems, while sounding plausibly safe on the surface

so, are they or not not trying to define "harm"? I don't get it. and you ALSO need them to follow "do no harm", or it is not worth anytying.

The funny thing is the robots themselves made the 0th law in Asimov's books... putting humanity ahead of humans. This will be interesting on how we get to these laws... or even whether they make sense. Also of note, in his books, man stops building robots, because they are too dangerous.

R. Daniel Olivo mentioned that the laws of robotics are not only insufficient, but also that they limit his ability to protect humanity. Keep working in this direction, it needs to be understood and improved. That's exactly what Asimov was trying to show.

this is why we need bottom up safety approaches. rules fail in complex environments but learning from human feedback scales with complexity. excited to see this dataset grow!
